NEW YORK HERALD. JAMES GOKDON BENNETT, PROPRIBTOR AND RDITOR. Tur ANNIVERSARY OF THE MagpaLen Sociery— Dx. Tyxe in that Crowp—Exrenprrure or Mo- nry —Lart week, we had occasion to allude to the enormous amount of money which is annually col- lected from a good-natured public, for certain ob- jects, but which in fact'went to fatten and support ihe disbursers of it. We have not time to amplify vpon this subject; but we wish to call attention to ene instence—to merely one of these societies. The Probable Safety of the Steamer Rhode Island. ‘The steamer Rhode Irland sniled from thia port en the 2th of January last, for San Francisco. It will be reecilected she was but a few days out, when a re- pert was received, from » portion of those who sailed in ber, that she was lost in the neighborhood of Ber- moda, and nearly if not sll her crew porished. The statements of those who left the ship were conflicting, and while they were believed by a large majority, there were many who doubted the truth of their statements, It may be well to state here that some of those who left the ship, and reported her in a sinking condition, were smuggled on board without the knowledge of the owners and captain, at the time of her sailing. The report was also started, and reecived with credit, that Captain Crockett, of the schooner Mary Wise, who picked up the boat containing those who left the Rhode Irland, refused to render aid in saving those left on board, although eho was in sight. Captsin e | Crockett, on bis return, denied that he refused to go to the aidof the eteamer, but, on the contrary, whea | he propoted to go inacareh of er, was told that she ha 2 sled of the bark Isabelita Hyne, which ‘ap’ ‘ai arrived at this port on the 6th instant, from Rio Ja- : 4 * | neil rhe ah areh, = and itis said there are 1,300 passengers waiting | | Breede posnnry es cg a ps oy for veseels to convey them to Ame | gtegmer of ech erent at length unter tall, golog in.” We!
