Wasminoton, May 4, 1850, The President's Reception—The Earl of Durham—The Furor on the Appearance of this Young Lion—The Gal~ hin and other Committees, ‘The President's reception. last night, was thought to be the finest of the season, the most distinguished to the codfish of all, on account of the presence of the young Karl of Durham. te came in apon the arm of Sir Henry Bulwer, the British Minister, and was intro~ duced to old Zack and the Executive family in due form, He is a slim young man, quite a boy in appear- nee, quite inexperienced, apparently, and very modest, Let us note some of the remarks of the crowd Far apr (there were quite a number of fat ladies in the ny; generally the majority are rather of the + er; in fact, our fashionables prefer to be » aud don't Like to be fat)—~Well, that’s the Earl of Durham. He looks to be a nice young man, They say he's worth $350,000 « year. They do have @ splendid aristocracy in England.” ELDeRty Gestirian yes, he’s a nice young man, of course, thongh there is nothing very remark- able about bim except bis $350,000 a year, And, ag you sey, my dear, {he English aristocracy is splendid, While the mass of the people ar e death in workhouses.” “'* PANDers, starving $ Far Lapy’s Davenren—Do hush, pa! for my part, I think he’s handsome. Look, ma, such a pd ae 2 what « good complexion he has. Ue is a perfect love of a young gentleman, Wiareun Deaocrat to one of his constituents— re's your Earl of Durham—rather green about the eyes, aint he. Coxsiiternr— Well, he does look a little verdant, evem to usof the backwoods. Is that the man that started the short horn Durham bulls? Mrainen—No, it was the old man, He was a great cattle raiser; but, I suppose, the poor devils who work on the estates would like to be fed ag well as the Dur- ham bulls. That's your English aristocracy. They monopolize the land; seg raise splendid cattle; but people who do the work are fed on garbage, ‘Tall Southern slavery! Perhaps this young man will it in the South. and then go back to England and draw up th ro slavery, and the arity of Ax Well, I tell you, Sam, is & good time coming for the outsiders, and one se doys Old Rnglond will feel ap earthqaal at arl of Durham. and the nobility. and royalt: the Chureh, which drain the life blood from Separee will be swept off like the Florida {ndians, hunted do and slaughtered, as were the ald noblosse of France im the great Revolution, It will be sure to come to that, ‘The Earl of Durham, meanwhile, passed into crowd, and young ladivs peeped over inen’s shoul to getalook at him—others were dying to be intro- duced to him 1.000 a year; had but Very’ little to say. he seemed to be a very retiring and modest young man, and perfectly uncen= scious of the terrible critisisms of the fleree democ~ racy onthe aristocratic institutions of John Bull. Yesterday the Earl of Durham. in a bobtailed eock- ney dress of pepper and salt, called at a book-store to get a Congressional Dictionary, to find out where the lions of the town were located. There has beem very little trotting after bis Excelleney in Washington; snd to do him justice, he does not appear to desi be made a fool of like Uharley Dickens. But will tnke. $860.000 a year is hard to beat, and a title of that sort is worth something even in the U nited tates, where money is no object at all. Even old Zack, pi ty well to do himself. looked upon the yoathful akbob with an eye of expecial favor; and dealers in fancy hrunk back like the Hindoos, in the presenoo of some great idol. ‘Thomas Ewing was on hand, robust, rotund, and shiny-faced as an alderman, apparently very Mttle little concerned about the House investigation claims; but looking like a man who has secured | profits, and “don't care a damn.” The distinguished Attorney-General was also in the ring; also Mr. Mere- dith; also Mr, Preston; and the public will be to learn, from the Intelligencer. that the Attorney-Gene~ ral has been a perfect God-send to the Treasury, and har saved more money to the goverument than any y has a conception of. Mr. Clayton was nen est, and Mr. Crawford keeps shady. ‘There were not the usual reinforcements on hand from Congress, @ large proportion of the two bouses ing gone to see and hear Miss Cushman as Mra.
