Theprobable Failure of the Cotton Crop at the South—The late Froste—Great Demand for the staple. ‘While prices show that the demand for cotton is so fluctuating, it would be we'l for spinners to turn thoir attention for a moment to the source of supply. Brery good, fair, warm spring day between the 2th day of March and the 20th day of April, will represent fully 30,000 bales of cotton. The cotton-growing region, too, ie now subject to precisely the same atmospheric changes. Thus, a frost of 1848 bad precisely the same effect trom the Colorado river, in Texas, to the Savan- nah, in Georgia. The frost of the 16th April, 1849, was killing at Galveston (Texas), New Orleans, Meinphis, Mobile, Montgomery, Tallahassee, Savanna, and, in- deed, over the whole South, A , this season, on tho 28th day of Merob, was tho same on the same day in Texas. G ‘and intermediately. This will prove that the whole ootton-growing region is influenced by precisely the rane atmospheric changes. We had a white frost here on the th of April, ber ph ao oaly eight days earlier than last year. Indeed, ia, within five days, fully as late as last year. thing here in the shape of vegetation ia several wi later than usual. Wheat last year was heading, 001 was knee-bigh, and cotton was “chopped out,” wh nipped by the frost of the 15th of /pril. Now, there is not a stand of cotton within my knowledge suff- ciently good to be “chopped out.’ Wheat is scarcely in the “boot,” and corn is just up; so that you may judge for yourselves of the lateness of the season, It is fully three weeks later than usual. We can by no means, if an ordinary season, make as much cotton this season as we did Inst year, for then everything combined to increase the crop We could not have inade the seasons suit better “if wo had held the sun in one hand and the watering-pot in the other.” 7 frost, too, kept off weeks later than usual. If we an early trost, we shall not by any reaso: be able'to produce as much aa we did last season The weather looks now (April 18th) as if we should have frost in less than twenty-four hours. We here have no fears about the price of cotton. I have been able to got 12% cents for my cotton. but refused. I am not concerned at all in cotton. except in its production, but I am probably as well able to judge, trom an inti- mate acquaintance with every section of the cotion- growing region. ax some of the English “bulla.” [tis the general opinion that # large crop of cotton will be a but { doubt seriously if 10 per cent more will rplente We bave about 1,000 miles of railroads, entirely with. in the cotton-growing region, in progross, which will take off » large portion of the able-bodied force, Ma- nufactories aro springing up, and capital is being di- | me verted to other pursuits. ‘Twenty-Gve stoam-mills are now being put up, within an, mowles Jiavs Reo, there was not one.
