Bince the first of April, quotations for most of the securities named in the above list have, as will be seen, improved, in some instances, several per cent. Govern- ment and State stocks have throughout been in active demand. and large purchases have.been made in fulfil- ment of foreign orders. This has been the principal cause of the rise in prices; and everything depends upon @ continuation of the European demand for these securities, in the future course of the market. By nearly every steam packet, within the past three months, very large remittances of American stocks have been made; and the amount of interest that will be due on them, in July and August, will be enor- mous. We have no doubt that at least seven millioi dollars will be duc, in July and August, on our stocks held abroad ; and the probability is, that the bulk of this sum will be paid in further remittances of stocks. At the rate of absorption realised during the past three months, nearly the whole of the govern: good State, and other sound stocks, will be absorbed by foreign eapitalists within the next twelve months, which will swell our semi-annual payments of interest, to go out of the country, enormously. This drain upon our resources we ha: ot yet felt, and probably will not, as long as we have stocks to remit in payment; but when our supply is exhausted, when we have to draw ‘upon our specie, or upon the proceeds of the sales of our products abroad, to pay this interest, we shall find the burden exceedingly onerous. We have paid for at least fifty millions of our imports during the past two years, in stocks; and the evil effect ‘of excessive importation has, therefore, been merely pestponed. Had it not been for the advantages thus derived from foreign capital, we should have lost twenty to thirty millions of specie, and have been, at this moment, in the midst of one of those financial and eommereial revulsions which periodically visit us. As it is, the seeds of one have been sown, and we Our export trade has, for some time past, been in « very lamen- teble condition. The only staple article of ex- port that has been in demand, or could be shipped murt soon gather its fruit on speculation, at « profit, is cotton; and we do not derive 60 many Advantages from an increase in price for this staple, as is generally owed. There is suche universal Lm gory J in this try to go at loast to the full length of the rope, that our \mports Invariakay inerease tar beyond any increase in the value of «x- Higher prices for the raw material, have usual- |y a corresponding eflect upon prices for manufactured an + frequently manutretured goods sdvance more rapidly iy than the material of which they are made. are no markets for our breadatuffs in urope, or likely to be. this season; aud in eonse- wence of the it deficiency in the crop of cot- lon, and the ‘ange home consusaption, we have very little eotton we are Ley pid for the our evidences of things continues, the woree it will be for ail classes, for when the reaction commences. it will have a more ruinous effect upon private eredit. ae Exchange. -— US ts, ” My Beha Brie RR 0 Ode de i 7 wo bi 74 mo i Wao boo us bn By 4 Bi 2s "be ar « ww de ba Sis a ha J wee 4 10) Resa’ RR He a fONerk WeeRR | tid » poan mo. og Horiom RR ro 20 4 bio 44 bis 4s fs yew A ait af spect ing to W.
