The next thing to be considored is, how does this quantity left for Great Britain, compare with her for- mer consumption of American cottons. The follow- ing ls the record:— Amanicax Cotton taxen vor Consemrtion in*Great Bairaim vor THE Last THN TRA! 1574.40 ++ 1,585,900 1,157,800 . c +1,463.600 1844... 1.428.600 1849. . +1,590.490 Which statement shows she has consumed more Ameri- can cotton every year, for the last ten ycars, than the whole supply she has for this year, one of which years —1847—she was nearly prostrated by bankruptcy, owing chiefly to the rot; and even that year she consumed 1.157.500 bales American cotton, being 17,000 bales more than the whole supply for this yenr, when she has cheap bread and superabundance of money. The conclusion, therefore, ia irresistible; there is not cotton enough, and, like the imperative laws of trade, governed by supply and demand, prices must advance, to check the consumption; and, as an American, I wish this country to receive the benefit of high prices; for when the supply is large, foreign countries taxe ad- vantage and force prices down as low as they can. It will be noticed that the amount I assign to tho United States, for their consumption this year, is 75.000 to 100,000 bales less than parties conversant with the home trade, feel confident, will be consumed. For my estimate for the continent of Burope, I am also well within the probable limits. JL. STOCK SALES.
