At first, the testimony of Littlefield bore down vpon Dr. Webster with some degree of streng’h; buta want of corroborative proof upon svchestential circumstances, and the possibility of vontrivance of the whole, seem fally made out by the positive testimocy brought forward by the de- fence. Lr. Keep’s cov fident deeluratiens, too, are swept away by opmions—how reliable, we know not—quite as firmly given, on the part of Dr. Mer- fon, eyainst the possibility of asserting that the teeth found in the furnace were those of Dr. Park" men. Thus, the identificanon ot the remains is stilla subject tor reasonable conjecture and posi- five doubt; aod if en abe has not been proved on the part of Dr. Webster, there at least appears Joum enough to apprehend trickery, in placing the remains in the laboratory, had any one been dis- posed to eflect an object by so doug. Conse- quently, we shall be prepared to expect an acquittal ot the prisoner, or an agreement to disagree. The disappearance of Dr Parkman has now been as thoroughly investigated as it could be, and his estate, volued at a half million of dollars, will be tnbyect to a settlement in the probate office. Cslifornia, ia its present form, is only two years old; but ite nee, and growth, aud progress in the history of the commercial world, Terembles romance more than it dors sober reality or serious or every day fact. The discovery of the gold mines there, and the movements of the American ¢ igrantsto the dieging, reermle in @ great degree the excitement which aitended the original discevery of Mexico and Peru about three centuries ago, much more than they do any- ‘bing lee that hes taken place in the commercial world. The whole world, at thie time, ie more agitated by California ‘and ite mineral regions, than it ie by any other great event of the day. According to Butler King, ‘only & smell portion of the gold of California has reached this country—the most of it has go to Europe, and all around the commercial world. In fact, we are only in the beginning of the movement; and if several of the northern provinces of Mexico, such as Sonora and othere, could be added to the Union, in the same way as California was, the excitement in regard to gold digging would be quadrupled in the course of @ few years. According to all accounts, the gold re- gione of Northern Mexico are even richer than any thing discovered in Catitornia; and those regions now that the spirit of enterprise has been awakened, cannot remain much longer a sealed mystery from the enterprise of the age. Wake up! Weke up! Tue Forrest Divorce Case—Fortuen Move mEntS —We publish, to-day, Mr. Andrew Stevens's reply to Mr. N. P. Willis’s letter, which appeared yesterday. The speedy answer to Mr. Willis shows how the attention of the public is turned to the consideration of these important social revo- Juuens. Public opinion is likely to be divided upon a question which the Legislature of Penasy!- vania has wholly abandoned, and the resul's of which involve the permanency of marital privileges and rights. The full discussion of the question would be eurious; but it is quite sufficient at pre- sent to meet the general deductions in the case— namely, the certainty of a freedom of intercouse, and a laxity of morals and manners, that pervades and undermines, to some extent, a large part of what is usually termed fashionable society. This will be more fully developed in the present case, when Mrs. Forrest’s suit for divorce is brought into one of the courts of this city. 1t will then be seen that all we have stated with respect to these ‘iberal indulgences in fancy, literature and art, will be fully unfolded. Meanwhile, it cunnot be wondered at that where the shoe pinches people afflicted with the tender corns of conscience will cry out, Well, let 1t pinch, and let them cry oat, es was instanced in the case of an evening piper of small circulation and less influence, yesterday, which would strain an impartial and just comment upon fashionable follies, as taking into the account | the respectable portion of the community.
