CHARGED WITH THE MURDER OF DR. GEORGE PARKMAN, MEDICAL COLLEGE, BOSTON, November 23, 1849. THE CROSS-EXAMINATION OF LITTLEFIELD. The Testimony of Mrs. Caroline M. Littlefield. dc. dies, aco. BY BAIN'S MERCHANTS TELEGRAPH, (OFFICE NO 29 WALL STREBT,) AND BOUSB’'S PRINTING TELE- GRAPH (OFFICE NO. 8 WALL STREBT.) FIFTH DAY. Bosron, March 23—11 A. M. Dr. Webster was brought in promptly this morning, notwithstanding the breaking of an axle of the van in which he was conveyed, on the way from Leveret street | tothe court room. About tem minutes of nine, the court and jury came in. The prisoner looked very so- ber to-day. Om Thursday, he conversed very pleasant- ly with some of his friends and brother professors; but the examination of Littlefield yesterday, which was very straight forward and damnpatory, was enough to excite any man, even less excitable than the doctor— innocent or guilty. Yesterday he looked very hard put to it to preserve bis composure, jerking about some, aod | geting in different directions; ‘oSntly in one direction. His spectacles hide his eyes somewhat, but a good deal of motion observed in the lids, There is great interest in the court to hear the cross examination, as it is supposed that in this the Prisoner’s counsel will disclose its line of defence. The cross- examination is being conducted by Mr. Sohier,in arapid and confused style, calculated to annoy and perplex a witness exceedingly. Thus far it disco- vers no clue to the prisoner’s plan, amd has drawn forth nothing at all contradictory to the direct exami- nation. Littlefield will undoubtedly be sifted, and is athless, being exceedingly mer- curial in his temperament. The court will adjourn for the day at 2 o'clock, which is « wise decision ; for keep- 42g Up the trial day after day, eight hours and a half each day, since Tuesday morning. in » remarkably ill- ventilated room, is a hard disciplim court, jury and reporters might prove to be capitally punished, and the prisoner dic natural death. Cross-examination of Littlefield resumed :—At the interview between Dr. Parkman and Dr. Webster, on the 20th of November, it was not dark out of doors; inside; in the upper laboratory, Dr. Parkman said to Webster, “ Are you ready for me to-night?” he accused Dr. Webster of selling some- thing after mortgegivg; I came right down, November 28d, and I took the broom; cannot say whether { took it from behind the door or not; the sledge was ieft by | masons, who did some work for Dr. Webster; I don’t | know that sledge was sent from Cambridge; the £ eeaits aren to from Eliza Frost of December last. Haynau has called out the National Guards of such large towns as Presburg, to make up a new levee of twenty thousand ‘troops. Prussia and the German States. ‘The Prussian Monitor, of the 5th instant, published ‘the names of the members of the Chamber of the State named by the government. They are all of the aris- ‘tooratic class. The vonstitutionalists and democrats ‘will not interfere im the election for the first Cham- ber, because they consider that the nomination of so many members of the aristocracy is too significant a hint on the part of the government, to sdmit of a hope ‘that the internal liberties of Germany, are about to be developed. All who desire sincerely that Germany should attain to a definite constitutional State, are greatly discouraged at this act of the government. A formal protest has been entered by the Council of Administration against Hanover, for withdrawing from the alliance of the twenty States, of May 26th. ‘We learn from Aldenburgh that, ip consequence of the termination of the armistice with Denmark, the sol- diers im that department have been called in. A Danish war frigate and a bark have been descried cruising off Balk. It would appear that they were reconnoitering. ‘The committee of the Sexon Chamber on the Ger- man question have agreed toa series of recommenda- ‘tions to the Ministry, urging the policy of adhering to the Prussian bond, and uring its influence with Wur- temburg and Bavaria to induce them to join siso.
