Them we shall see the old General come up to the mark, cashier, on the field of battle, the subalterns who have betrayed him, rally together his real friends, who have sup- ported him through thick and thin, and still are ready to support him, and gain another victory, surpassing that ‘of Buena Vista, by turaing out a regiment or two of the advisers who would other- wise cause lus ruin, and the ruin of the country. Morx Mxpicat Coitxexs—Mepicat Epucation —We lear that efforts are making to increase the number of medical colleges in this State. It would seem from this, that there were not doctors enough in the country to cure the “ills that flesh 1s heir to.” The subject of medical education may be con- sidered under two different aspects. The first, as Pustic Barus axp Wasx- .—The of ereeting public baths and houses, for the wse of the poor, was discussed some time mnce, pee anaags > lishment, byen act of Legislature, of “ People’s Washing and Bathing Association,” the capital of which was fixed at twenty thousand dollars. Of this sum, one-half has been obtained, and as soon as the remaining ten thousand dollars shall have been contnbuted, the association will commence ope- rations. We are perfectly well satisfied that there will be no in getting the requisite ba- lance, provided the subject is agitated a little more. From the result that has followed the establish- ment of public baths and wash-houses in Englaad, there 18 no question, we think, that similar insti- tutions in the city of New York would pay a handsome dividend, besides conferring a vast benefit on the poor and lower orders of our popu- lation. It must be borne in mind, too, that, Z all probability, that scourge of the human family, the Asiatic cholera, will revisit this metropolis during the present summer. the view of circum. scribing its ravages &8 much as possible, sanitary Tum and floggingin the navy, was held at the Tabernacle, Thureday. We have some interesting intelligence of a pri- vate character from Washington, which gives us some hope that in the present slavery agitation which is disturbing Congress and dividing the country, Gen. Taylor is at last beginning to wake up from the deep sleep of indifference or apparent andifference in which hehas been lulled, and may probably in a very few days or weeks act with his own instincts, his own good sense and energy, inetead of purzutag any longer the drowsy course and bad councils of nis incompetent cabinet. The account w ch has been furnished us states that the deba’ s in Congress, and the speeches of the different members of both houses, have now begun to produce their natural effect on the good sense and characteristic qualities of Gen. Taylor, in their proper way. At the beginning of the pre- sion throughout the civilized world. We have, in New York alone, men of talent and genus in their profession—practitioners, teachers and professors —whose fame is extended over Europe, and stu- dents from all parts of ths wide and extended Union are attracted hither. But while we would do honor to the skill, talent and learning of our medical practitioners and professors, we think 1t is a matter of deep regret, that owing to the facility with which charters are granted by many of the States to soi-disant medical schools, there 1s dan- ger of our being flooded, in a short time to come, with an innumerable host of doctors; and itis a vulgar saying, though true enough, that ‘too much of a good thing is good for nothing.” That our fears are not altogether uafounded, the following statistics of the numbers of medical stu- dents ground out of the mill into regular M. We are convinced that it is only necessary to rete to the subj to satisfy our people of the neces. sity of establishing a ‘system of free baths and wash-houses in this metropolis, that will conter manifold benefits on the public; and we must con- fess that we are more than a little astonished that the trifling sum of ten thousand dollars, which is needed to complete the capital of the “People’s hing and Association,” has not been contributed befere this. It 1s apparent that the investment would be profitable, and that it would, in addition, confer benefits on the public, the mag- nitude of which cannot be overrated. The General himself had always opposed this appointment, but he was over- ruled by their worse opinion and the bold- ness and infatuation with which they believed they could succeed in causing the confirma- tion to be carried. This rejection, with such an awful vote egainst his cabinet, produced quite a terrible omen, and an appailing contemplation, to witness the preparation of such swarms of doctors; for whenever we see a large fleck of turkey-buz- zards hovering over a country, there must inevita- of putridity and carrion in the vicinage. It cannot be accounted for ina natural way, on the ground that they are all necessary, and that there wiil be employment enough torthemell. We are driven, therefore, to the necessity of believing that this over production isdue and owing to idleness and pride, to the vanity of desiring to live without labor, to the folly “gentlemen,” in those who have the spirit but not the means.
