They advance one day: and recede the next, and areas variable ass weather- eock. Holders are evidently getting out of all patience, and we should not be surprised to see @ let down in prices, somewhat similar to former times, We hare peen fancy stocks fall ton and fifteen per contin twenty- four hours, and such things may happen agein. No- thing is impossible in Wail street. The old generation of outside speculators bas run out. and not until a new one springs up, can we look forthe infation of euch Dubbles as distinguished almost every other year, from 1832 to 1897, and from 1943 to 1548. All who passed through these times safely, are too wise to be caught ow by any rpeculating scheme; and those who were mn cleaned out, have nothing new to give theme start. There has been « mort thorough revolution in the public mind and those who bare capital to invest prefer simost anything else to fancy stocks. A large amount of capital is now employed in buying up basi- Ress paper, which heretofore went into fancy stocks, and it has proved, thus far, a safer and more profitable business. Moneyed men realice, in this way, fall twelve per cent per annum for their capital, and deal in nothing but the best paper la the market. New Canago, Myre oh, Reading, Brookfield, Ridgebury, &¢ ,pow seek the Harlem road for conveyance to New York, When the Stamford and Danbury road fe completed, {t will monopolize all the freight and passenger trafic of those towns, and get ‘8 good share of the business from the Housatonic road above New Milford. It is estimated that it will draw, the first year, at leas: seventy-five | thousand dollars worth of business from the above towns, that now goes to the Harlem road. ‘The annexed statement exbibits the quantity of | wheat, Indian corn, and potatoes, raised im éaoh of the | Southern or slave States, in the year 1848, aecording to the estimate of the Commissioner of Patents :— Propvetiox or Baxapsturrs, ko, iv tHe SOUTHERN Bra: re, in ‘heat, Indian Corn, Potatoes, otto "aehoGe Sout 8500,000 — 1.00),000 38,000,000 8,500,000 sawn 200000 000,000 000000 (000,000 2,808,000 7,000,000 2,000,000 10,600,000 1,500,000 Econo 2.30.00) 23000000 1,3) 00 8.000.000 800,000 7,250,000 680,000 1/300,000 318,000 4 5 s £3 | g : {85,478,000 It will be seen by this table, that in these three arti- cles the North ie mot so far in advance of the South. The three leading articles of food—those upon which man most depends—are much more equally divided in the cultivation, between the North and the South, than is generally imagined. Taking the value of these arti_ cles, the North shows a preponderance. Soutnenn States. Price. 60 otatoes...... ++ 85,475,000 100 Totals eee cceeee eee eese oe + + 8284,264,600 ‘This shows an excess, in favor of the North, of $33,- | 614,600, in the three leading articles. In all other ar ticles of breadstuffs, such as barley, rye and cats, the | division is about the same as in wheat, Indian corn and potatoes. Most of the Bay is raised at the North, while all the cotton, rice and sugar, and the bulk of hemp and tobacco, are raised at the South In 1848, acoord- ing to the estimate of the Commissioner of Patents, the population of the Nerthern, or free States, was 13,109,- 000, and the Southern, or slave States, $8,578,000. Not- withstanding the great excess of population in the North, compared with the South, the agricultural products of the South are, in the aggregate, much larger than those ef the North. The South not only monopolizes the cultivation of four of the most important agricultural products of the country— cotton, rice, tobacco and sugar—but it raises more hemp and more Indian corn than the North, andin pro- portion te the population engaged in the cultivation of grain, raises more of all articles of breadstuiffe than the Northern States. This difference will annually increase in favor of the South, as the cultivation of many articles in the old tree States, is running out nearly as fast as 4s is Increasing in the new free States. Asan instance of this, we need go no further than the State of New York, The raising of wheat in this State is falling off, endin a few years, comparatively very little of this grain will be preduced here. Ohio will not raises twentieth part as much wheat, twenty years henoe, es the does mow. The great extent of territory included in the boundaries of the Southern States, affords great facilities for extending the cultivation of the soll, and the annual increase im the consump- tion of the single article of cotton, will require, before the lapee of many years, a much larger tract of country for ite production than is now used, and in time the aggregate agricultural products of the South will be double those of the North. The people at the North have a very vague and limited idea of the agricultural resources of the South, and as for manufacturing fecili- thes, they are equal if mot superior, to those of the North. ‘The report of the Auditor Gemeral of Pennsylvania presents the annexed statement, showing the condi- tion ef the banks of that State in Nov. 1849, which we have compared with the report for Nev. 1844. There Bow remain, as above stated, twelve thousand one hundred and six 94-100 dollars, whilet the saspended debt is reduced to ninety-two thousand seven hundred and eighty 97-100 ($92,780 27-100.) Of this debt, about one-fifth is considered to be undoubtedly good; the balance doubtful, or decidedly bad. ‘The railroad appears to be in # prosperous condition. This proportion of debt, to ori- ginal money capital, would, in almost any enterprise, prove embarrassing and discouragiog. ‘The repairs in progress and in conte uplation will add, it is estimated, $420,000 to the debt, making the ageregate debt, on completion of improvements, $8,607,072. The whole of these expenditures may not be required during the present year, 1850, but certainly will before the close of 1851. Of the debt of the company, about $250,000 will be payable in 1868; about $250.000 in 1868; the $2,000,000, 5 per cent debt, in 1866; and the balance of the bond debt, at various periods, between one and nine years. / Stock Exc! ws Bee SZSSeeesege oo.
