MONEY MARKET. ‘Tuesday, March 5—6 P.M. stook market opened heavy this morning, and tations fer most of the fancies fell off fraction. the first board Harlem declined % per cent ; Read- Railroad 34 ; Morris Canal 7% ; Farmers’ Loan 34 ; iy Hudson Railroad 34; North Ame- Long Island advanced 34 ; Erie Rail- 4\{; Pennsylvania 5’s }{. All the fancies were jite active. and most of the transactions for cash. 2 feeling among eperators is not buoyant, and there evidexitly a crowding of stock upon the market to- The large cash sales do not suit the bulls, as it them more steck than they want, while it relieves beare, and enables them to reduce their time eon- The sales of Harlem, at the first board to-day, ire all by one house, and it is the impression in the that some of the green grocers are selling out. the second board there was mo change in prices the market closed heavy, with a downward ten- ¢ amount on deposit, in the office of the Assistant urer of this port, at the clese of business to day, $3.709.721 47, iim examining the reports of many of eur railroad panies, we often meet with discrepancies which pletely baffie all our attempts at comprehension. y one who will take up the last two reports of the ‘lem Railroad Cempany, and carefully compare m. will ree many such, end will readily understand bw eatily a cursory reader might be misled by the ures. In October, 1849,a report was made by the 4 of directors, in which it is stated, page 12, that receipts from January to July were $191,892 15; penditurer, $100,451 98; total, $01,440 17. This ference is called, in so many words, net earnings for ix months; but it eppears to us, that it would be ore proper to deduct the interest and dividend on eferred stock for six months, and then call the lance net earnings. This, to be sure, is only a trifle; looks very much like clap-trap etatements made to teh the eye of cursory readers. Again,on page 18, the same report, it is stated that for the then our- onths, they are expected to pay for interest, 60; dividend, preferred stock, $60,000 ; total, 6260. As no mention is made in either report of y interest having been paid for the first six months, can only infer what it smounted to, by supposing at the estimate of what they were to pay the last months, was bared ppon what they had paid th six; and we, theretore, conclude that the interest dividends on the preferred steck ought to amount b twice $75.260, or $150,520. Now, by referring to 6 of the January report, we find that there had en paid for— vidend om preferred stock 5 oO. do terest from July to December. By subtracting this last amount from $150,520, have a discrepancy of $25,882 63. Without insist- ig any further upon the fact, that in neither report is ny mention made of the interest from January to july, it does seem odd, that in October we should be pid that $75 260 was to be paid. and only two months we are informed entirely different and much aller amount bad been paid. ‘The value of the productions extracted from the d mines of the Oural, (Russia ) for the first half year 1849. amounts to 4 300,000f , as regerds the govern- ent mines, and 10.190.000f. on private account —total, 4 490,000f , which furnishes, in comparison with the half year of 1848, an increase of upwards of ,000f, arising almost entirely from private enter- e. A similar and proportionally larger difference ppeers with reference to the platina mines; the juentity extracted being, for the last ten months in 848, 23 hilogrammes, and for the first half year of 849, 66 kil , worth about 66,000f. ‘We understand that the High Court of Missiseippi, as recently decided, under the Briscoe bill, that the of the statute ot limitations is not surpended ing the pendency of writs of quo warrento and in- wetion against the banks, notwithstanding the acts them from making collections during such and that sil suite in favor of such benke are red, unless brought within the time presoribed by general statute of limitations. This decision, it is has the effect of wiping out several millions of in- btedneer. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the value of mer ndine exported from this port for the month of ‘ebruary, 1860, distinguishing the value of shipments each place. ov Exronts raom THE Feanvan Pont or New Your. 8.59. ¢ Bex i 3 rnd 334 eit > My 44 3+ $3.33 1a ss suet 2 TT48 6.408 anton 1,880 82008 ce ed 30's = err 7B es Hot 2 i hore 8,151 a — tas 734 = (10,182 2,825,206 m.193 — _ — 4609 4 1,005 om od ‘520 4.500 0 =| 63 14.056 = - oan 7 s - fim: 14a = V1 18 89 Pee ae 1 70 ey 7 a ti we = mm | 868 — 12.170 ~ = - i a Totals... ... 8318596 107,887 67,473 188,395 ‘Total value of exports for the month, $3,500,389. During the past month, the warket for government securities has been very much agitated by the exciting accounts from Washington relative to the slavery question, and United States Sixes fell off between one and two per cent, and wore steadily settling down, when large orders from Europe made their appearance by the last steamer, and the largo purchares in the fulfilment of these orders, carried prices up again. Most of these orders having been ea- tisfied, the market has become inactive, and prices ap- pear to be falling back. Apprehensions are entertained here that the next steamer, or perhaps the o1 ftter, will bring out large orders from London to sell, in con- sideration of the agitation of the slavery question, and fears relative to the result. We have no doubt such will be the effect abroad of the present state of political affairs in thie country; and mo one can say that these fears are without feundation.
