Zke Preparaticn of a Compromise by Bir. Webster. TAB Views OF BR. CALHOUR, OUR SPECIAL TELEGRAPHIC CORRESPONDENCE. Wasnina ron, February 23, 1850. In the absence of J ny active public dec] rations for two days, the m nds of the denizens of thie city have been excited by the frequent proph -cit apd remere with reepect to the future. Expeota- thos stends tip-toe, looking out for something ex- cineg, novel, and decisive, with respect to the settlement of the great question. There are hun- drede of rumors about the determinations, wishes, tropes, and threats of some of che small “eminent” mrp; but these being of litle publie importanae, and only heeded to be laughed at and scorued, eny special reference to them is unneces-ary. However, it may be relied upon that two powerful Btete:men are soon to be heard, aud I hasten to give you information thut will be coafirmed by a future fact. Mr. Webster is preparing and has nearly com- pleted the outlines and details vt an eriginal com- promise that will setile the controversy. He will take nBh constitutional ground, and will lead the North forward with terms from which the South w ll not desire to break away. It is possible that be may introduce his plan with a powerful speech thie coming week, though it 19 possible he will defer his action till the week after. Much wil depend upon Mr. Calhoun’s progress Mr. Calhoun is engaged iu ¢icuung his speech, which will be read in the Senate, and which may be expected «bout Thursday, should uothing inter- ‘yene to preclude the intention. It will be, I regret to fear, Mr. Calboun’s last public effort, and un- doubtedly superior to every other, great as many of his speeches have been during his career a9 a stuteeman. The nature of ghis malady is such that repose, at least, must be insisted upon, to guard him against a speedy danger. However, if he behold the settlement of the controversy now, he may be consoled, at the close of his life, by the Tefleevion that it will never again distract the South, to whose interests he has so signally and successfully, for her welfare, devoted his splendid talents ond his life.
