"$328,483 69 69 On page 23 of the address of the Directors, dated Mareb, 1849, it isstated that the entire cost of the road from Piermont to Hornellsville, and equipments for running, including the Newburg branch, and the cost Of the ferry equipments from N: York to Piermont, would be $13,000,000 (thirteen millions of dollars.) The road is now completed to Corning, a point 42 miles ‘this side of Hornelleville, and the admitted cost has Deen $14,428,891, an excess over estimate, for 42 miles Jess road, of $1,426,801. The most moderate caloula- Mon, places the cost of that 42 miles at £$600,000, over and above what has already been spent on it, which, added to the present cust, will make the aggregate to Hornelisville $15,000,000, instead of $13 000,000, an increaee of $2,000,000. On page 85 of the address alluded to above, it is esti- mated that the earnings of the road to Binghamton ‘would, be $1,000 000 for the year, and $1,600,000 to El- mire. In January, 1849, the road was opened to Bing- hamton; in June to Owego, and in October to Elmi- ra, and the aggregate income for the year amounted to only $810,143 62. Asthe road was opened to Bing- bamton all the year, to Owego seven months, and to Elmira three months, the company's ertimate can be put down at $1,250,000, cr $440.000 ever and above the actual receipts, This statement is mecessary to show the faleity of the assertion on page 6 of the report of February, 1850, that the carnings from April 1st to December 31, 1849, only fell short of the estimate $73,000. The gross receipts of the road for the present year—1860—are estimated at $1,600,000. The company contemplate completing the road to Lake Erte by May, 1851; payments for whieh are to be made as follows: — to issue three millions and s half of in- bearing interest at 7 par cent, payable half {LUuy. Fedoomabic at the pleasure of the company with, Principal ef thee banda plete a tie are ot we u en! ja00 Bie rosd, ster the frst’ of July, Isl, until the earnings shall reach $1,200,000, reserving only e sufficient to pay the interest oa the montane bonds This appears to be a very fair proposition, and if ac eepted by contractors and proves sufficient to complete the road, will keep the aggregate cost below twenty mil- ons of dollars ($20,000,000). Although that is an i mente amount of money, to psy the iaterest on which. will require gross imoome from traffic of at least three and « half miliions of dollars ($3 500,000), still it is mot beyond « possibility, and may, with jadicious manage ment, be realized. It has always been our opinion, that if the Erie Railroad could be completed to the Lake within a reasonable time, it would be es productive as any line in the country. This opinion we still enter- tain, aod have no doubt bat that the stock of the com. pany will, the first year after the road is completed. its fpancial affairs economically and properly be worth every dollar originally paid for it France, folly, extravagance exbidited by those who have, since the re-organization of the company, bad the control of its affairs, bave nearly destroyed pubdile eon fidence, depreciated the stock, added largely to th ost, and created diMcuitier and embarrasements which have frequently threatened to engaiph the concern agsin in bankruptcy. We have never oppored the railroad as @ great public work, but we have been, and still are, opposed to the management and the cutra- grous manner im which they have ducted the affairs of the company. They bare made all sorts of mis- representations to the stockholders aad the pabtic, by their extravagance, added millions to the cost of the read, and by their acts have depreciated the credit of the company. eo that they have been compelled to pay usurious rates of interest, which has given their secarities such « character in the market thet cau- tious, timid capitalists are afraid to bold them, aod operators in Wall street only buy fell them on rpeculation. Notwithstanding ali this, if they can mavage to keep life in the conceera and complete it to the Lake ail will go well, provided proper persons have the mansgemect of it. The aifeirs of the road have been so horribly dectored and dosed by quacks, that it srstonishing the patient hes surrired so long. If it has passed the crisis of the disease it will slowly re. cover end eventually beeome strong aad healthy; but it o relapee take place. wo to thors ho are largely Interested as stockholders, To insure ite ultimate re- eovery, it will be necessary to get rid of those who bave so unmercifully doctored It. From the reports we bave received of the operations of railresd companies during the past year, we have compiled the annexed statement. showing the aggre. Tranerontarion ano Exrerses of Rartaoane. The sbove we have been able to make out, after a great deal of trouble, It will be seen that the Harlem is, according to the company's statement operated for lees than thirty cente per mile. This is less thes baif the cost on any other road im the list. ‘This difference is too great to be believed, and mo one can for © moment ruppoee that the Harlem company Dave a system of management #0 superior to every other in the country, ae to bring their expenses s0 much lees. Compared with last year, the fallacy ofthe statement is at once seen. Im 1848, 209,000 miles were rum, at an aggregate cost of $198,480 87, being about £2 cents per mile ; and hew is it possible that « redac- ton from that amount to 29 cents, equal to 63 cents per mile, could have been bronght about in one year! There jes great disc'epancy somewhere, and the me agement may be able to explain it satisfactorily, but we very much doubt it.
