There has been no material alteration in the condi- tion of the Bank snd branches, except in the circula- tion, which bas increased, since July, 1849, $253,394, There bas been a small increase in discounts, specie abd deposits. An extra dividend of three per cent has been made from the fund realized from the assets of the Schuylkill Bank. Hereafter this bank will, probably, declare regular dividends of eight per cent., and if the business of the Mother Bank and branches continue, as profitable as heretofore, there will be an overplus each year, after paying even that large per cent. The annexed statement exhibits the amount of reve- nue derived from customs en the commerce of Lake Champlain, entered in the Champlain District, during the navigable seasons of 1848 and 1849; also the number of entries and clearances of vessels, during the fourth quarter of 1849, at Rouse’s Point, in the above dis- trict -— (Cpemtiges or y= Cramriaix. jaties on Imports. 1848. oksereseS. The intercourse between the Canadas is, as shown by the above figures, rapidly in- creasing. and will continue to increase in nearly the same ratio for years to come; which will greatly aug- ment the business upon the Lake, and increase the golle upon the Champlain Canal. The number o! Bri- tich vessels entered and cleared at the Custom House Rouse’s Point, in the quarter ending 31st December, 1840. is 275; Amertooan veesele, 250 —total 584, besides ‘two lines of steamers daily each way. The returns from the other Custom House, on the opposite side of the lake, would undoubtedly show as great an increase of business on that side of the lake. Large quantities of Canadian flour, grain and ashes have passed through the lake, in bond, for this city, to be exported from this port. One firm in Burlington, Vermont, the last season, Shipped upwards of 80,000 bbls. flour and several theu- Sand bushels whest, from Cleveland, Toledo and Chicago, @irect to Burlington, vis the Weliand Canal, through Lake Ontario, down the Seint Lawrence, and up the Richelieu River, through the Chambly Canal. The commeree of (anada, for the year 1549, compared with 1848, exhibits a moderate increase, both in the smports and exports.
