' ee Marine Affairs. Deraxture oF THe Sreameniy Geoncia.—The new and splendid steamship Georgia, Captain Porter, pro- ceeded om her first voyage te Chagres, yesterday after- ‘noon, at three o’clock, with a tremendous mail and one Bundred and seventy eight passengers, the names of whom will be foundin another part of this day’s paper. Th uber of persons who witnessed her departure was about two thousand, embracing the friends and Relatives of the adventurous gold seekers, who deter- mined to abandon home and all its associations, for the purpose of seeking their fortunes in the gold diggings and placers of the modern Ophir, the far distant State of California, as well as many who wished to see that splendid vessel, There were the usual leave-takings— the Kies, the squeeze of the hand, and the promise to write immediately after arrival—as well as the bustle, exeitement, hurry and worry consequent upon the d ‘At three o'clock pre- amed out of her dock, and towards he Hook and the Atlantic. As she had reached the centre of the river, thi Galifornia steamship New World, which was launched but few hours previously, threw down the pee, and intimated her desire to test her speed with that of the Goliah— with what result will be seen in ovr re- port of ber trial trip. It is stated that, at the commencement of the year, the equipment was much impaired, and that the road now stands at least $12,000 better than last year. The bridge repairs have been heavy. Nearly twelve miles of track have been relaid during the year, which has added about $30,000 to the item of road repairs. Most of the Eastern railroads have been in the habit of carry- ing these expenditures into construction sccount, for the purpose of cutting down the current expense ao- count as much as possible, and we are glad tosees change in a system soradically wrong. Notwithstanding the charges to expense account of | several items which have heretofore been charged to construction account, we find that the latter has, dur- ing the past year, largely increased, as will be seen by the annexed comparative statement : — Boston anv Worcester Rattnoan—Conatavction Ac- ou, $0, 1810, Increase, ‘am iste head 79 are Pam Ota 99,050 04 78 00 81,131 66 30 00 | SSS 52 _ $2,500 21 | 873,113 64 10, 3 Sas ss Fat tt 340,993 6318.02 47 ADVERTISEMENTS RENEWED BVERY DAY. There appears to be no way of arresting this increase of capital. In 1841 the con- | "truction account of this road amounted to less than | one half its present Poon fey ti 2 64,396 $4,650,898 $4,908, Stinnett :* si, Sue Bn oi on neinineane: desde oeqpetanetion, gcccitetitel 30h only $47,041 48 was for engines and cars, leaving $210,808 for other purposes, the nature of which does | not appear. Relaying of track, bridge repairs, &c., were charged to current road expenses, and still there appears to have been an expenditure of $144,869 15 on the main track, and $66,039 om the branches. The increase in the construction account of the Bostonsnd ‘Worcester Railroad Company in 1840, was but $20,470 less than the aggregate net earnings for the same pe- Hod, eo that had that account been closed at the com- mencement of the year, and all the expenditures charged to expense account, there would have been but $20,470 for dividends, interest om debt, ko. It has always been our impression that branch roads were unprofitable, and we have never seen any *tatement of their earnings and expenditures calcu- lated to remove that impression. The branch roads of the Old Colony Company have been s drain upon the earnings of the main track, and the recent report of | the Worcester Company exhibits the same result. The following table shows the length and cost of the several branches, with the expense of working them, and the income for the year :— Length Branches. It will be seen that the cost of working the branches bas exceeded their income $4,020 09, which sum, toge- | ther with the interest on their cost, ($34,508 86) makes ‘a draft on the income of the main roed, of $30,437 95. | At the date of the previous report—Nov. 80, 1848— | stockholders the total amount of capital paid in was $4,246,175. By the last report, it appears that the entire capital, $4,600,000, has been paidup. Increase of capital in one year, $254,825. The official report of the condition of | the finapcial affairs of the company, om the lst of Dec., 1849, presente the annexed statement :— Boston ann Wonensenn Ranncsn—Foras Invesr- Lene saseta, a8 yam A large portion of there assets consist of fuel, oil and other materials, which are daily required for the use of the road, in repairs or rumming expense, ands “miler amount will be constantly required as a work- Ing capital. The aggregate capital and debts amount to $5,170,- 642 66, upon whieh dividend and interest have to be paid. It will be seen that the assets comriet of materials — for operating the road; consequently they are not pro- | ductive im the way of interest. The cash on hand has deen appropriated to the payment of dividend and in- terest. The eompany contemplate applying to the Legistature, for liberty to create new stock to the amount of $600,000. This will make the capital $5,000 - 000, at whieh it is supposed the company might stop. ‘We do not, however, suppose any such thing. There is no stop to the construction aecount of railroad eom- panies. If they add nothing to that account, and pay for everything out of the annual earnings, the stock- holders would look im vain for dividends. x see, Soon, 925000 U 8 6's, "66 12hy oho TD Island RR b10 5000 ry We ¢ 3 S Peer Et 3924085523 eit ES essesse' 3! eviguesaBszas§ S28 8 it oi 90 Kentacdy to 71 He ‘at a Trost 2G Fam *E E Bk % “Wo Erie RR % Bendin “ay be . s rH 2 FS + in any capacity.
