awe COMMERCIAL AFFAIR MONEY MA! MARKET, Thursday, January 17-6 P, &. ‘The stock market continues in a very feverish state, and prices very unsettled. At the first board, today, Reading Bonds fell off +{ per cent; Erie Bonds, (new,) 26; Harlem, 4; Hudeon River Raliroad, 13. Farmers’ Loan advanced 3; Erie Ratlrosd, ; and Canton Com- pany, }¢ per cent. Harlemand Farmers’ Loan were exceedingly active to-day, the sales of each being more than two thousand shares. We do not look for any im- mediate improvement in prices for stocks of any kind, but on the contrary, for @ heavy fallin some of the yeeding railroad fancies. How they are sustained at Present prices is more than we can fathom. Holders have, for the past six months, lived in hope; but they must abandon even thet, if outsiders cannot be induced to come in and relieve the street of the enormous ‘amount of stock pressing upon it. There is, at present, notbing to attract this important class of stock specu- lators but a falling market, and that is just the reverse of what they want. Outsiders generally come in upon a rising market, and usually purchase for an improve- ment, At the second board there were large sales of Far- mers’ Loan and Erie—the former at an advauce of }¢ per cent, and the latter at a decline of %; per cent. Harlem fell off 44 per cent ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Trensurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $196.047 24; payments, $101 968 23; balance, $3,335,732 15. It will be seen that the deposites are increasing under the heavy im- portations, very rapidly. A report of the meeting held at the Exchange, advo- eating the abolition of the usury laws of this Scate, will be found in another column. The meeting was well attended, and but one opinion prevailed relative to the ‘uselessners of such @ law, and the great, restrictions it Places upon enterprise of all kinds. There is probably mot another law in existence that is so frequently broken as this, and the little regard paid to it is calou- lated to destroy that respect for all laws, 0 necessary for the security of property and regulation of society severally. A new banking institulion, under the general law, will go into operation in Buffalo, about the Ist of Feb- ruary, under the title of “Che Hollister Bank.” Its expital will be $100000, Henry Wager, of Utica, will be the president; John Hollister, of Buffato, vice-presi- dent, end Robert MH. herman, cashicr, ‘The Seamen's Bank for Savings has declared the usual dividend, payable the 21st of January.
