MONEY maRKET. all the fancier took a turn dowaward, There were im- wense sales of Farmers’ Loan at the first board, at a Gecline of % per cent, principally on time: sellers op- tion. The plea of usury that has recently been raised, for the repudiation of debts te a large amount, has errated w great deal of apprehension among holders of stock in certain companies, as many of the claims of eoncerns are tainted, and will prove, if contested, Yalueless, The Farmers’ Loan and Trast Company will Probably be affected very seriously by such a plea on the part of its debtors, and its assets may be largely re- duced. As regards the statement that the company bad no legal right to hold real estate, very little confi- enee is placed in it; but as purchasers of property @slike having anything todo with titles at all ques- thovable, it is very likely many of the lots of land re- eently sold, may be refused. These things are the Cause of the rapid depreciation in the market value of the stock. Erie Bonds, 1859, seven per cents, fell off, to-day, 3¢ per cent, sales having been made at 825 percent. To give some idea of the estimation in which these securi- Yen are held, it is only necessary to state, that nearly three per cent interest have already accrued on them, which actually reduces the market value below eighty Deing a discount of twenty per cent. Now, it fe pretty well known that we have very little faith in Erte Railroad securities of any kind; but it appears to ws that, for a temporary investment, the second mort- gage Erie bonds would pay, at present prices, pretty well. The interest—three and a haif per cent—is pay- able on the Ist of March; amd present holders or future purchasers would do well to sell thie, or any other stock or bond, in anticipation of the payment of the semi- aunvel interest or dividend. It confidently stated that the Harlem Railroad Com- pany will declare @ dividend on the Ist of February. How much it will be, we bave not learned; but, if it is one cent on a share, it will be more than has been earned. The company has a large floating debt, ‘and it will soon be largely increased by relaying the ity track with a heavy rail, and the construction of ‘an arch over the track from Thirty-second to Farty- ateond street. The expense of these improvements ‘will be about $200,000. In the face of this large ex- Penditure, and the fect that money was borrowed to make up a deficiency in the payment of the interest o® the preferred stock, the directors have the hardi- ood to declare a dividend on the old stook. All the advice we can give to the holders of the stock is to sel; Defore the 1st of February, or before the books close for the dividend, as the stock will probably fall double the amount of the divi in less than one week after it is paid, The psy: it of forced dividends. is too well understood to catch many outsiders. ‘There will be a saie to-morrow —Wednesday—at the Merchants’ Exchange, of $150,000 Hudson River Rail- Toad bonds, in sums of $1,000 and The bonds bear seven per cent interest, Men on the whole road and entire property of the company. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port te-day amounted to $60,462 47; payments, $91 876 41; balance, $2,445,123 02, The Exebaege Bank of Hartford, Conn., has de. @lared e semi-annual dividend of four per cent. ‘The Macon and Western Railroad Company a divi- @end of two dollars and fifty cents per share, payable to New York stockholders, on the lst of February. The amount of United States stock issued to foreigners, from lst to 4th January, 1850, both in- elusive, was as annexed :— inn of 1842. Do. 3846...44 Do. 1847 Do, 1848..... Several counties have omitted to make returns, and it has therefore been found necessary, in making up the last annval statement, to adopt the amounts re- turned for the previous year. Rate of taxation In 1849, two-tenths of a mill on the dollar. The aggregate as- Pessed value of real and personal estate in the State in 1845, was $500,090,953; in 1846, $002,479,016, and in 1847, $610,963,047. No one for m moment supposes that the amounts named above constitute the actual value of taxable property in the State, The system of assessment is very defective and radically wrong. It fs the general impression that the assessed value does not exceed one half the aetual price established by the estimate of owners, in their transactions with any and every one except the assessor of taxes. The Comp- troller suggests, that some provision be made for the Amequality of valuation, and for the difference between ‘the asseesed and the actual vi of taxable property, ‘that there may be a more equitable distribution of the pubiic barthens, ‘The annexed table exhibits the quotations for the Principal public seourities of the country, in this mar- Quorarions ror Srocks im Tw.
