After fourteen days experimenting, and forty-four trials for a Speaker, the House adjourned last night, with the Chair vacant, although the most inviting seat in the House, and worth sixteen dollars a day. Among ‘the expedients now suggested te secure a Speaker, are the following :— F a step the pay till there is an election an ony side or the other to let the election go by de- To select a dozen candidates by lottery, and the contest by a toot tuoe between them?” 4 Seeide ‘To toes up for it. To elect Giddings unanimously. To exclude the tree soilers and Georgia whigs, by re- solution, as disunioniste, and then elect a man. ‘To elect by # pluraisty, To elect by the dropping off system—dropping the Jowest man on every ballot until there isan aietitn. To let old Zack choose the Speaker, to be confirmed by the Senate. To elect two Speakers—one whig and one demoerat— to serve each @ week alternately. To fall back on Mr, Brown. regular whign and democrats, movement of this kind, we know of no more available man t Mr. McDowell, of Virginia, as he is conservative en the slavery question, and, personally, one of the most popular mén of the House But, quien sabe? he Senate, in the interval, have called upon old Zack for bis nominations, and he has replied. that he will send some down to-morrow morning; 8o that, if the House should not elect a Speaker before the Senate will at all events be full of business. The speech of Mr. Clay simply indicates that he is disposed to compromise on all sides We learn, to-day, that the affair between ate. Duer and Mr Meade, of Virginia, is not yet but that their friends are busy negotiating on e jubject, with every prospect of success, Wasmincrox, December 16, 1849. Altitude of the South—Prospects in the Senate—Stormy Times in Prospective—Mr. Clay, Gen. Taylor, #e. I see, by an article inthe Herald, of two or three days tince, that a petition is circulating in New York for the Purpose of preventing the cenfirmation of our new Charge to Austria, It might, perhaps, be well, by way of expressing condemnation of such an appointment; but, so far as his confirmation is concerned, it will be totally unnecessary. I have it from two distinguished democratic Senators. that he can by no possibility be confirmed, after taking such abrupt leaye—whatever might have been bis prospects otherwise. The House was in good humor yesterday, Nothing is indicated as to whe will be its choice, by the votes, which, as you will have seen, resulted ti torily on all sides. Yet Mr. Boyd stan: 2 with bis party to command a strong support, which cannot be shaken by anything the whigs could do to prevent his election. But the fact that he has not hi tofore been considered in that connection, may aecount for the dirposition to hung fire among those whtose votes Were counted upon as almost certain fo fayor of any Southern man generally supported by the opposition. The whigs seem to be entirely at sua, Their candidate Withdiew at ® moment when, perhaps, he ougat not to bave done so; and they do not seem to find uny other upon whom the ultras of the two sections can unite. My ispression is that Mr. Cobb will be Sp eventually, and that his election will be sffected yy an arrangement. | should not ordinaril: & state- ment in such positive language; but ave resson to believe that this is not far from correct. You will have seen Mr. Clay's speech in the Senat. His position fs, to say the least, an equivocal one. lie declines to be considered a leader, The administea- tion are endeavoring to make the best of it; but his best friends do not seem to know how to regard it, ‘The speech is reported differently; but I believe the cerrect rendering of the words with reference to his declination of the leadership, is that that he had net offered the motion, “ owing to the disinelination 1 feel to appear to take the lead in avy measure or matter ecming before the Senate.” His language and tone in the Senate was wins it always has been, and was listened to with profound respect which has cha acterized the m: of that body in former days, whenever he occupied its attention. His cciehetinasy influence doce net seem to be in the least impaired His acticn on the with the whi question, in conjunction party, is matter of profound speculation, Th re South is laboring under the most in- tenm eltemaxt upon this subject. is not to be qars- tioned, The scenes of the last two or three days ia the House, have exceeded in wild turbulence, im their overpowering bursts of passion, that find vent in the heat of excited debate, in bitteruess of invectiv in terrible imprecation, and threatened coavuision, the stormiest rcenes in the French Assembly, when the socialist chiefs would brought destruction upon the revolution of any goverument, and the fabrie rociety, burying them In one commenruin to attain their ends. ‘Tis conventions whieh hare been called, the mesrages of the governors of the different States, the defection of those who be bees dered the staunch and been made in Congress by in their places, and ecting under the weight of their heavy responst- Dilities—that a large number ef Southern States are prepared for @ collision in opposition to the Union—all show that there is sober and serious work in hand for those who would cement rather than weaken the bonds of brotherhood which have hitherto held together this vast confederacy, Where will Mr. Clay—where will the administration staud, im the midst of these contending facti ‘The fight in the aie will, if possible, be more bitter and uacompro- mising than that ii Mr. Bentoa stands like @ tiger at by ready and eager for the contest.
