It is understood that as soon as porsible after both houses are organized, the slavery question will be rushed forward by the anti- slavery portion of each. They are determined, | understand, to take the first opportunity of putting it into the arena, and settling at once the question, whether the anti-slavery sentiment is to prevail, no matter what the consequences may be—even if a disso- lution of the Union should result from it | have ona former occasion informed you of the step which it was rumored portion of ths Southern Senators had deter- mined to take in the event of the Wilmot proviso being concurred in by the Senate—that they would resiga their seats, and that their resiguation would be follow- <a A up by ti by the States which they represented, by a seces- the Union. ihe representatives of eight States, eit is said, have determined upon this course of action, Now let me me to the foundation on which those Itis this.
