Important from Waeshingtom— Another Disclosure Diplomatic Rupture with Sweden—The Herald Explosion—California Mail Arrangements, &c. mae would think that Mr. Clayton has a particu" lar fancy for hot water. What with Poussia, the Bey of Tunis, the Minster from Chili, the Conde de Alcoy, the King of the Mosquitoes, and Billy Bowlegs, he has been kept remarkably busy for the last «x or eight moaths ; and there is no won- der that he desires to take refuge im the “ returs- ment of private life.” But another diplomatic rupture has leaked out to-day. Mr. Clayton hus had * a sharp correspon- dence” with the government of Sweden. As I understand it, the cause is substantially as fol- lows Mr. Ellsworth, late Charge to Sweden, was, a letter from some Swedish official to our go rae and the Swedish Charge at Washington, charged with certain ithest cusduet. and, upon that charge, was recalled. After his reeall, od bel before he had left Stockholm, he procured from Baron Stermeld, Swedish Munster of Foreiga Affairs, certifiente exone vating bim from the allegations upon which he was recalled. This certificate threw the whole burden of proot upon our Seere- tary of Stwte, and placed hut in the attitude of having } unished a public officer wuthout sufficient proot of bis crime, sud with the proofs to the cone trary of his innocence from the government to which he was commissioned Mf Clayton fired up; and, asin the usin business, he wyote a ¢remptory demand to the Swedish Charge then in New York, requiring bis aporarinee at Washington without delay ut the Charge had gone home. Mr. Clayton then applied to the Swedish Consul- General for an explrnation ; but he knew nothing about the muiter, and hod nothing to say upon the subject. Mr. Clayton then wrote directly to the Swedish Minister of Foreign A(Turs at Stockholm, in the same indepe ndent and iadignant tone as to De Tocqueville ; und there the matter stands. Whether the Swedish Minister has condescended to oa , or Whether the enceate cordiale is brok- en off for the present with that government, has not transpired. The case, however, is but another illustration of the bungling manner in which Mr. Clayton has peapaged the diplomae, of bis devartment. It isto be hoped, as reported, that Mr Clay, or some other competent man, Will epecdily take hold of our for- eign relations, and str The publication of that ev from Washington, in the great sensation at head Itis the town talk; end while the underlines of the Cee; are exceedingly wraihy, the old man_of the Union chuckles over it with real gusio It is so rieh, 80 spicy, and so very funny, that (rat programme of the cabinet, as comy vared with its ractice, is a eubjeet of general laughter ond jocularity.
