Purraperuia, October 20, 1819. . | Improvements—Mrs. Fanny Kemble—Amusemenis The Markets, Stocks, &. When I was last in your city I was much straek with what appeared to me a rage for i improvement; palaees of marble, granite, and free stone geing up im all parts ef the city, and in the great thorough- fares, such as Broadway, the Bowery, and Green- Wich street, stores that were once considered apl did, undergoing the extravagantly expensive preeess of being modernized, as it is termed. We, of Philadejphia, have something, too, to boast of im these particulars. Our merchants, our bankers, and our brokers, have been basking i in the sun- ehine of commercial prosperity for so many suc- cessive years, that they have taken to building aad improving, to show the world some enduring evi- dences of their present riches; and with State 6's above par, and State 5’s as 87), (as much as any five per cent. stock is worth) they are quite exeus- West of Broad street, some private man- sions have been ereeted within the last year worth’ in every respect to be the residence of a Wall street broker; and the time is fast approae! hing, it it has not already arrived, when a_ purely aristo- eratic ee phere will hover over this favored lo- eality. Spring Garden, the number of really naagnific ah wellings that are now in the eourse of erection almoet exceeds belief. In Chesnut, Second, and Third streets, the new stores (of this year’s growth) have actually alook of metropolitan splendor, The unsightly ruins of the old Mansion House have been taken down, and on the site of. this once world-reno’ hotel, four splendidhouses are now slowly raising The first story is al- ready up, and among the novelties of the day may be mentioned that over each window, executed in stone, isa shield, and on each shield is the bar si- mister, which no doubt denotes that the building is not to be constructed purely of one material, but a mixture of granite, briexe, and marble. ss Mrs. Fanny Kemble gaye her last reading this morning. was present at her reading of “Othello” last evening, and a ped yer, more spectable, or more intellectu: audience has sel- om been seen in this city. She wore a white atin skirt, cut very low in the neck, and short leeves, and appeared to be in the enjoyment of he most robust health. Two splendid baskets of flowers were presented to her, which she acknow- ledged with a sweet smile and @ graceful curtsey, at the close of the performance. We have no change to notice in the flour or grain market, which continues dull, witha dowa- ward tendency. The cotten my arket is quiet. The prices of coflee and sugar are fully sustained. Since the receipt of the Niagara's advices, there has been more activity m the etock market, at ad- vanced prices. The advance in State 6's is fully equal to one per cent. The sales at the stock board to-day were large, atthe advanced prices. ‘The following were the sales of stocks:— First Board —$l9l Lamy 1 080 $1,000 City 6s, °78, 104; $2,800 do. do,, — 050 State Ge, 8734; $400 Li oars 000 Btate roe! tay street.
