@ays, but it is yet so abundant that the rate of imterest on business paper ranues from six te eight per eent, asceording to its length, and on go- vernment stocks frem four to five per ceut, Notwith- standing this, no one out of the street dare toyeh fan- ey stocks, and speculators in the street purchase solely to sustain prices and reduce the average cost. So of the stocks we refer to, have been upon the mark ten, fifteen and twenty years, and they are, in reality, worth lees now than when they were first created ; every yeer seems to reduce their value, and in time they must become extinct. Outsiders see this, and, fearful that they may purehase them once too oftem avoid them altogether. This is certainly the safest course to pursue, and if they adbere to it they will, at all events, save what money they have, or, at least, they will not lose it in fancy stocks. If there was the alightest possibility of these stocks ever acquring any value, it might do for desperate speculators to take the risk; but,as they now stand, there 1s a much better ehanee of making money on a race course, or at the Faro table. Everything coming under the head of fan- ey stocks we include in this eategory; there is nota single, solitary exceptio: The annexed statement exhibits the quotations, in this market, for the principal speculative stocks, for each day of the past week, and at the close of the woek previous. We have reat it carefully, and bave compared it with previous returns, and have ar- rived at the conclusion that the bitterest bear in Wall street could not, by any possibility desire an expo- sition better calculated to advance bis interest, by de- pressing the market value of the stock. The report is, as we stated it would be, signed by the whole board of directors, and it isa matter of much astonishment to us, used 88 we are to doctored railroad reports, that such a body of men had presumption enough to pre- sent such statemente, under the supposition that any man who could put two and two together, would place uy confidence in it. In the construction acsount of December 31, 1848, admitting that the Dover exten- sion cost $220,000 more than the estimate, there has been an expenditure of $318,018 more than has been accounted for satisfactorily, The proceeds of the sales of real estate have been appropriated, we suppose, to the reduction of the debt, otherwise the total indebted- nessof the company would, at this time, be $120,107 greater than the amount admitted in the report, or $623.996, instead of $403,129, ‘The aseets of the com- pany have, it will be seen, been reduced largely. The receipts of the company, from all sources, for the last six months of the present year, as estimated in the report, will be $190,000. Expenditures of trans. portation department $105,000. Poussin— Mr. Clayton and. Col. #remont—-Old Bullion— Democratic Presidential Movements—Mr. Chf- | ford. ‘The recent elections in Maryland and Penasyl~ vania have astonished the adininistration, for it was believed that President Taylor's visit lad gained popularity for the whig cause. The Genes ral himself is the * noblest Roman of them all but, unfortunately, he places too much confidence in several members of his cabinet, who often de- ceive him. He, however, defends them, and re~ gards attacks upon them as attacks upon himself, the cabinet beg regarded as « unit. Virgima did net consider herself reuch honored by the ap- pointment of Mr. Preston as Secretary of the Navy, and so she returned to the House of Kepre- seftatives only half a whig, instead of four whigs, as previously, Maryland elected a whig less, be- ing dissatistied with Mr. Johnson, the Attorney General. Georgia, in her recent elections, has loomed up democratic, Mr. Crawford’s cabinet tation doing no good. Pennsylvania has just spo- ken, and has changed front. The Secretary of the Treasury comes from that State. We have not received news (rom Ohio, Mr. twing’s home, but anticipate a like disastrous result An interesting om dit explains, in some degree, the bad humor of Mir. Clayton towards M. Pouse tin, and in relat.on to matters and things in gene~ ral, about the time he coaxed General Taylor to permit M, Poussin to retire, without making his formal cong M. Poussin is net the only distin guished personage who has treated the Secretar of State with a want of respe Colonel J. C. Fremont, the son-in-law of Col. Benton, and the fumous explorer of the Northwest and West, it will be recotlected, was appointed, some time ago, Commussioner to ron the boundary line with Mex- ico, vice Col. John B. Weller, removed. Well, Colonel Fremont was advised ot his app volatment, and bis commission duly forwarded to him, in Ca- lifornia. He received it with cool contempt, ead to this day, we are informed, has not condescended. to notice Mr. Clayton’s polite invitation to accept of it. Doubtless, the appoiatiaeat of Colonel Mre= mont was made in the hepe ot coneiliaitng Old Bullion; but he has not forgotten the course and. votes of C) ‘ayton and Johnson in the Senate, and Collamer inthe House, respecting his son-in-law; and the bait did not catch the fish. Old Bathon, there is litde question, will charge, “horse, foot and dragoons,” on old Zack’s cabinet, especially aw Calhoun sustains them; and, vie versa, Calhoun will be governed by similar impuls e3. "The rumor that the last nained intends to resign his seat is regarded as foo There is not @ credible word of foundation tor it but the wishes of hisenemies. The Charlestoa Courier, « short time since, contained an able article non Y him for the Presidency im 1352, and denied his aileged disunion proclivities. That paper has ever been, heretofore, opposed to him, and its bringing forward his name first, is regard siguiticant: of the dec}sion of his friends to stick to hia, and not to withdraw bis name. This is his last chanee, as he 1s getting old, and it may be expected that he will-be run, convention or no convention, espe- cially if Bentoa should lead the free soilers ia the contest. Mr. Buchanan goes to New Orleans ina few weeks, on a visit to his friend Joha Slidell, and returns via Alabama, to vieit his other friend in that State—his old bachelor co-lodger, Hon. W. R. King. Of course, he does not go electioncering. Mr. Dallue, it is said, gors to Charleston this winter, to argue a great insurante case peading there, for a Philadelphia insurauce company. The Hoa. Nathan Clifford, ex-munister of the United States to Mexico, is sul in Washington. hi wasa great fawe pas by Mr. Clayton to reeald him. If he had remained in that couatry, he could have procured for us ‘Tehuantepec for a reasonable eum, und the cause of his recall rs perfectly ridicu- lous. itis all about a dispateh to the Mexican go- vernment respecting the protocol, which he wrote: under the instructions of Mr. Bue’ re not re~ commended by Mr. Clayton. It is suid that Mr. Clayton has put his foot ia this matter likewise. Reelly, he is a most unfortunate dipiomatist.
