It will be seen that the receipts from pas- sengers were about sixty per cent larger then those from freight, in the aggregate; but it will be observed ‘that several of the companies named in the list do « mueh larger freighting than passenger business. It has been theim- pression for a long time, among stockholders in rail- oad companies, that the rumning expenses and re- pairs only amounted to fifty per cent; but this has Deen erroneous. Ifa fair and fall account was kept, and everything put down that legitimately belonged to it, we should find that the running expenses amount- od to nearer seventy-five than sixty-five per cont of the gross earnings. The bonded debts of the State of Alabama, as reported to the last Legislature, distinguishing the place of pay- ment, when due, and rate of interest, are as annexed:— Atapama.. en Finances, tena When Amount. aya ble. 100.000 New NWork: |? “Hi50 di don. 10 6 1882 5 1888 6 i638 5 OB WS OG cn 66 CS be 66 ” B00 In 1847, the assessments amounted to $353,666 O7,ana the collections to $271,168; and in 1848, the assess- ments amounted to $482,610, and the collections to $414,175. Im 1848, all the counties made returns but Dale, Monroe, and Washington. In 1847, the assess- mente in there counties amounted to a little more than eight thousand dollars. Im addition to the above debt, the State owes bonds te the amount of $600,000, invested in the capital ofthe Mobile Bank. The bank has, thus far, paid the inte- rest on these bonds, and has now against the State $90,000, for interest paid on them, The above tables show the entire indebtedness for whieh the State is required to provide means of pay- ment. The bond debt is not so large as the foregoing table shows it to be. That table is taken from the latest ofMfieial report; but since it was prepared, the Bank Commissioner has, no doubt, reduced the debt by the purehase of bonds. What the amount of re reduetion is, we have no means of aseertaining. The cost of collecting the taxes in 1847 was $12,338; the cost In 1843 (the same per centage being allowed as in 1847) will reach $20,000. This amount will be largely inereased by the provision of the law which requires the eountios to have not more than ten nor loss than three district assessors. This provision will increase the ost of assessing, to the counties, fully $28,000. It cannot be less than this, and may be more—making $48,000 for assesning and collecting a revenue of $482,- C10 49. lansifying the aseets belonging to the State, it ap- pears by the last reports to the Legislature, that the good debts due the banks amounted to two millions of dollars, which, at eight per cent, gives an annual inte rest of $160,000, Up to the 18th of January, 1849, there had been collected, of the good, bad, doubtfal and un- known debts of the banks, $985,741 84, which amount bas been, without doubt, converted into securities for the purchase of State bonds. iw POARD, . % Bete PR reed, en by mistake, Who~ wimeraeee Lear rwme, w Tew " Py Greenwich st ‘wi 7 TPO bs. THREATENED ATTACK ON CUBA. INVASION OF THE MEXICAN REPUBLIG. Proclamation of the President of the United States. THE STEAM FRIGATE ALLEGHANY ORDERED TO THE GULF OF MEXICO, Kien, den dee OUR WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENCE. Wasuinoron, August 13, 1849. The Movement at the South. > A startling rumor reached here last night, that a a plan was on foot, by some adventurers in Texas and New Orleans, amounting to some two thou- sand strong, to pounce down upon Mexican terri- tory, revolutionize the whole country between Tampico and the Rio Grande, including New Leon, Coahuila, Za¢atecas, and San Luis, and en- deavor to annex it to the United States. The at- tempt may be en abortion, but the certainty of the undertaking causes no little alarm here, to the government. As it will be a gross infringement ot late treaty stipulations, all needful steps will be taken to prevent a stampede. ‘Wasuinoton, August 13, 1849, Another “ Annexation” Buffalo Humt—The Evi- dence in the Case—The Position of the Government Dead Set against the “* Orels,” §c. In addition to rumors and reports, through the newepapers, of preparations mysterious but omin- ous of some important enterprise of a military character on the Gulf coast, private letters have been received by the editors of the Intelligencer, confirmmg previous informaiion. From these let- ters itappears that a band of 500 men are now en- camped on one of the emall islands of the Gulf, ac- cersible to Cuba and Florida, and that they are in correspondence with confederatesNorth and South, in reference to a proposed descent either upon Cu- ba or Tampico. We have no doubt that similarin- formation has been laid before the Secretary of ‘State, and understand that, informally, he has had the subjeet under consideration to-day. The importance of the reported band of armed men “on one of the islands of the Gulf,” may, however, be over-estimated. It may turn out to be some petty marauding expedition, or some Ca- lifornia company lying over for the steamer. It is certain, however, that there are many per- sons in Florida, #0 particularly anxious for the an- nexation of Cube “‘at they would assent to a mili- tary expedition _ grnere were a reasonable prospect of a promwnciamento anda rising in their favor, on their landing upon the island of Cuba. The object would then be to secure, first, the indepen- dence ot the island, by driving out the Spanish au- thorities and setting up a republic, and then, as toon as expedient, to petition for annexation to the United States. Kxperience has proved this to, be an infallible met of acquiring large territories, and there is perhaps no plan by | which Cuba coald be eo readily annexed to the United States. wan is one material obstacle, however, in the The cabinet is the sworn enemy of all oe rp falo hunts.” The cabinet wonld juss as soon connive at the hostile invasion of Florida, as at the descent of a “buffalo hunt,” under the o1 zation of citizens of the United States, upon: or Mexico, or any other territory, inland or with the government of which we under treaty obligations of peace and friendship. These are the relations in which we now stand towards Spain and Mexico. The administration of Gen. Jackson conmived at the hollow-ware, (six and twelve pounders,) and the troops of emigrants, (armed volunteers,) sent from ‘he United States into the republic of Texas, pending her war for independ- ence ; and in that General Jackson could be ex- cused, if not approved, tor the population of Texas, which Santa Anna sought to exterminate, were alo from the United States, with whom our na- oe d family sympathies were directly inter- t “Such is not the case with reference either to Cuba or to Tampico and the Sierra Madre: ast even ita similar colonial settlement existed, th present administration AY too inflexibly Se [nfreetions of pacific ob! organizations which may esi ly be suspected of an intention to violate the national faith. As soon as detected, any buflalo hunt, therefore, destined for a republican Sxpetieeent in Cuda or in Mexico, will be euppressed. The course of Mr. Clayten in re- gard to the United States war steamer, told to the Prossians, is an evidence of his aversion to the buff#lo hunters. He will act with promenade i in Fuppreseing them, on the first proofs of their hos- tile intentions against any power with which we are at peace. [From the National Intelligencer, A: 13.) From certain steterments which we e lately observed in the public prints, and, sull more, from the information of private letters, we are induced to credit the existence of a serious and extensively concerted enterpriee, having in view some illegal decign against The peace and dignity of a neigh boring end friendly government. At one point (on an island on the coast of the | Gull) there are said to be embodied from three to five hundred men, and agents are believed = engaged in Northern as well as Southern cities, 1 enlisting men for the expedition. In the South it ve given out that the enterprise is simed againnt ‘Tompico and the Mexican territory of the n Medre. Elsewhere it is asserted that Cuba is its ebject. Sufficient evidence, however, has been ob- tained to eatisty the President that the design of the expedition is - invasion of Cuba, and that the intervention of the Executive was necessary to preserve our neutrel oblignions, and to keep un- sullied the honor of the American people. In weeuing this proclamation, President Taylor gives another proof of his determination to enforce the observance of our neutral duties, and to pre- rerve by all constitational means the tranquillity of the country. He harbors no lust for war or con- quest,or military excitements. ‘The seenes through which he has poesed, and in which he has acquired deathless renown, are full of too many sad and bitter recollections to generate any other senti- ment than a desire for universal peace. Prompt as he will alwaye be to resist any invasion of our own righte, he will be equally prompt to resist any ag- gression by our citizens on the rights of other na- bone.
