Harlemend Erie Railroads, % each. U.8. 6s, 1867, declined \; and Reading Railroad, 4. The management of the Erie Railroad are making desperate efforts to sustain the market price of the stock. The easy state of the money market enables them to carry the stock, and purchases have been made from parties who were disposed to put their supply upon the market, so that those who may be in want of it, to deliver on matured contracts, may be compelled to pay sslight advance. This would be @ legitimate operation for bull speculators, but it hardly becomes the management of such an immense concern as the Erie Ruilroad, There are more operations (buying@ad selling) in Erie Railroad stock, in the directors’ room of the eompany, in Wall street, than in avy broker's office in the city, and we have fre- quently heard it remarked by those who frequent the office of the company on business, that there always appears to be some great movement going om, some mystery, some secresy about matters and things, that is calculated to give @ very unfavorable impression, As individuals, the managers of the Erie Railroad have undoubtedly @ perfect right to speculate in the atock; but as managers, they haye no right to use their posi- tion to inflate and depress the market value of the stock from time to time, to the injury of stockholders, ‘This, however, is a part of the system upon which the affairs of all the railroads of this eountry are eonduct- ed; and it would be folly to expect anything else, We are getting @ little more light every day upon this sub- ject; but we shail not rest satisfied until we bi in black and white every statement we b jutive to the financial condition of the different com- panies, particularly those under the control of speeu- lators in and out of Wall «treet. The Norwich and Worcester Railroad is another il- of the present day, A few days ago it was anuouuced that a dividend of 214 per cent had beon declared, pay- able in the bonds of the company. At the time, we stated that it was e speculative movement, the sole ob- ject of which was to iutlate the price of the stock, so that eertsin parties could get out; and the result eonfirms the truth of the statement. [t now appears that, according to @ law of the State of Con- | nesticat, the company have no right to issue bonds beyond @ certain amount; as that amount has already been execeded several hundred thousand dollars, the direction bave rescinded the resolution declaring the dividend, and the stoekholders lose the two and « half per cent, or, in other words, it has not been taken out of one pocket asd put into the other. The eoncocters of this seheme have not made much by the operation, as the exposure of the plan prevented outsiders from being eaught, and the market value of the stock de- celine ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $78,418 49.
