In some instances they rule « fraction lower, and there has been more disposition to ell Government and State stocks thau we have pre. | viowly noticed for some months. Prices rule eu ciently high in this market to induce earful and cvu- tious people te sell, partiewlarly thore who have put their money in these stocks merely for the purpsse of employing it wntil the revival of tende. As soon as there is a demand for money for business purposes, there will be, without doubt, large sales of Government and State reenritirs axa large amount of éapltal is at Present locked up tm these stocks, which hay hereto- fore been employed im commercial pursuits, Tt ie the epinton, therefore, of shrewd oper the time to reli; before the market ta! season. and money fe worth but four and five per eont Jt is therefore highly probable that wheo monry foreign and domestic exchange, for specie, and for un- | ‘@ band stated at $1, ors, that now is | aturn, Prices | role as high at present asat any previous time this | becomes rearcer and inereases in value, the mar- ket value of good stocks will decline. As for the fan- ies, they are so generally held by brokers, whose re_ sources are, in many instances, absorbed by these worthless stocks, that movements in the ecommer- sial world have little influence upon them any way.— Everything depends upon the number of outsiders that eam be guiled and humbugged, in getting up any. speculative excitement in the faneies. Goodsound divi- dend paying securities, are affected more by the changes in the money market, and by the state of trade, than by any speculation among the brokers, and are therefore better for temporary or permanent investment. Changes ean be made and capital withdrawn when it is in good stocks, without loss ; but when money is put into fan- ey stocks, one never knows where it is, or whether the | whole will ever be realized again, ‘The probabilities are, that when he wants to use his money for other purpeses, a sacrifice, to @ greater or less extent, will have to be submitted to. We have known so many in- stances where these fancy stocks have been held for years, with the hope of getting out whole, and where finally heavy losses were submitted to, under the ap- prehension that the longer the delay the greater the | loss, that it is a matter of extreme astonishment to us that an individual of means ean be feund with sufi- cient nerve to rest over night quietly with such stocks in his possession. The epirit of speculation in years past, has raged so violently that people have blindly and recklessly taken hold of everything and anything, with the full belief that « large fortune would be the result of their operations. Now, public attention is turned more to investments in good, safe, regular divi- dend paying securities, and the legitimate operations of trade, Regular dividends of six per cent on capital, and mogerate but steady profits in business, are now more satisfactory than the temporary large dividend® of some of our railroad fancies, or the precarious profits of speculation.
