I called oa him, to learn the particulars, As I was in haste to visit a pa- tient in State street, Mr. Duffy accompanied me out. On our way, we accidentaily met the Captain, going to his ship ; I left them together, and rejoined them atthe ehip. Mr. Duffy and he had some conversation on the subject, in which I took no part. Mr. Duffy hinted that the whole affair might be settled for more money, which the Captain instantly declined, saying, “ that if the girls were abov ¢ ground, they should not | the city of New York until the matter was fally inves- tigated; that he had already been plundered, andhis | character outrageously maligned.” | On leaving the ship, [asked Mr. [Duffy “if they were Cathclics, and if they wore as stated in the Police Gazette, blessed crosses around their necks?” He said. “ he di not know, but that he would introduce me tothe girls.”” As my business Jed me in the direction of the city, | where they were stopping, | proceeded on; but on reaching the street, | told Mr. Duffy that I had chang- ed my mind—that | would not see thegiris, a« it might be insulting to their feelings to be made gazing stocks of He persisted in requesting me to goin. | said. if | | did so, that he must first consult them on the subject.”’ | He entered the house, returned, and said they had no objection to me, I met Anne Dickson only. The present liabilities of the company are payable in bonds at future dates—$27.009 | ~ being at 7 per cent, $400.000 at 6 per cent, and the ba- lance at 6 per cent It will be observed that the gross receipts fur the yoar ending 8st May, 1849, as compared with the previons year, show @ decrease of $8,265 31; and also. that the ons expenses for the same period show a docrease of 6005 17. The falling off ia the receipts have been in the through travel and freight, to and from New York and Boston, while the local receipts for passenzers have | reased, showing @ gain over the previous year. of | $8 327 06. This fact confir he expectations of the projectors of this road, that there was a growing busi- ness on its line, which. independent of extraneous and accidental som of inco.ne, would eventually reader it profitable to its owners. ‘The opening of the Worcester and Nashua Railroad in January last, has added to the business of this road, and connecting, as it does, all the roads of New Hamp- shire, and a portion of Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine. with this road, the board are confident in the | belief that the Norwich and Worcester Railroad is des- tined to become one of the most important freighting | roads in New England. ‘This is the substance of the report, but we have very lit. tle confidence in its correctness. The fuct is, we look upon all such statements with euspieion and distrust, Some of the directors are deceived, and they innocently de- | ceive the stockholders, There appears to be, to many, acharm in being humbugged, and they do not seem anxious to be enlightened. This company subscribed for $250,000 of the stock of the Nashua and Worcester Railzead, vpon which the Nashua company has been paying interest, which offset the interest which the Nor- wich company had to pay on so much of its debt.— The Nashua road having been completed some six months, the stockholders have to look to the earnings of the road for dividends, and those failing, go without them, Such is the position of that portion of the debt. The interest having ceased, $15,000 have to be drawn from the gross income, to provide for the interest on the amount subscribed for stock in the Nashuaroad. It is Proposed to sell this stock, and it is estimated that $187,500 can be obtained for what cost $250,600, The report says nothing about the increase of debt by the payment of a dividend of two and « half per | cent, in the bonds of the company; and we have no doubt there are many other items in reserve, which it is supposed better the stockholders should not be made acquainted with, It was anticipated that the Nashua road would bring business to the Norwich of at least $50 000 per annum, but it appears that the aggregate earnings of the Nashua road will only amount to about double that sum, ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity of fo- reign grain, flour and meal imported into Great Britain ' and Ireland, during the years 1847 and 1848, and for the first four months of 1849 :— Irentation or Barapstvrrs into Great Barrain ano Inxianv.
