The Murder of Mr. Buck—Arrest on Suspicion— Conrad Vender—Commencement of St. Mary’s— Cholera at the Alms Howse— Markets, §. The murder of Mr. Back continues to excite great attention, and yesterday a man named Tho- mas Davis, one of the foremen in the copper works, where Mr. Buck was clerk, was arrested on snspi- cion, and commuted for furtherexamination. The testimony against him is purely circumstantial, but in all the points very direct. A gun was found in his house that had been recently fired, and on the end of it was some putty sticking, the muzzle having been rested on the putty of the window, which was coneiderably indented. The muzzie of the gun was also found to exactly fit in the inden- tation made. Oa the morning after the murder there were foot prints under the window,of aperson in his stocking feet, impressed in the soft clay. A pair of stockings belonging to the accused was found in his house, the bettoms covered with this same clay, although he at first denied having worn any stockings during the summer. Ile was also discevered throwing away some yellow paper, which was found to! be similar to that of part of the precding ovat in the office beside the deceased, anda number of shot was found in his house, of the same size and description as those with which the murder was committed. Conrad Vender, who is to be haag en Friday next in the jail yard, for the murder of Mrs.Cooper, has within the past week beeome perfectly restless, although heretofore professing great Christian re= signation, He has refused to allow the miaisters to enter his cell, and says that they will have to enrry him to the gallows by main force. He is a strong and athletic young chap, about 25 years of age. ‘The commencement of St. Mary’s College took place yesterday. The degree of A. B. was con- ferred on J. Leeds Barroll, Robert Patterson, ( 0. nas. J. Vile K. Warner, Wim. Gwynn’ Cox, and Ch lere. The degree ot A Was also conterred upon Thomas M. Lanahan, Esq., Charles D. Cae pees of Franee; John ieeleston, of Maryland ; lenry Wysham, of Bailumore ; Michael ¢ agher, of Frederick ; Henry Castellanor, of Louisiana. Honorary certificates were awarded Osear Olivier and W) coat of Louisiana: Sheppard T. Ho- mans, George ‘Taylor, of Balttmore, and Eugene Setze, of Louisiana. The cholera at the elms house continues to spread slowly but not fatally, which the doctors attribute to the efforts made by the patients to con- ceal their condition, they being seldom brought to the hospital until in a collapsed state. Up to eight o’clock last night the whole number of cases had been 48, and the deaths 23. One had been cured, and 24 remained under, treatment. There has been but one case in the city, and that was of a pauper from the alms house, who had ran away, but om discovering his condition was sent back agai The’ following were the sales at the Stock Doard yes- terday :—$400 City 6's., 1860, 10334 ; 4 vhs. The grain mar- ket is very barely supplied, and but one or two small lots red wheat sold, which brought $1 $104, anda parcel prime white, $108. Small sales of yellow corn * at 60 cents, and white at 57. Outs 26 030. ‘There were offered at the scales on Tuesday, 700 head ef beeves, 207 of which were seld to city butchers and packers at prices ranging from $2 75 to $3 76 p and on the hoot, equal to $5 60 a $7 25 net, and $3 50 gross weight. The balance were chiofly bo rang and driven off by speculators. Our butchers consider- ed the prices too high, and declined to purchase further Some of them have sent agents through the country to buy up eattie at such prices as will enable them tosup- ply their customers on more favor terms than they could if purchased from those who buy ts speculate up- on them. 3s we quote 4508 t 100 Ibs with sales, at He they are in wm . Our Philadelphia Cerrespond nee. Puitaveruta, July 18, 1849. The Cholera in Philadelphia—Death of a Murderer —Rvufianism— Markets, Stock Sales, §c. Seventy-three new cases of cholera and twenty- two deaths are reported to-day, fifty-six cases and eight deaths in private practice ; six cases and five deaths in the hospitals, and fourteen cases and nine deaths elsewhere. It 18 gratifying to notice the decrease in the mortality in the patients under private practice, though the number of new cases is rather above the former aggregate. The doora of the Alms Louse Have been thrown open to all who wish to depart from the institution, and the consequence is that a great number of the former tenants are now leunging about the city, and by abusing their liberty will undoubtedly bring the disease upon them. Joseph Dover, mentioned yesterday as having been arrested at Cincinnati for the murder of Abra- ham Read, in Kensington, in 1847, has since died in the prison, of chol The steamer Penobscot started to-day, on her return trip te New York.
