At the second board, there was some activity in the | current in the morning. Long Island declined X, Reading Railroad, . The receipts at the office of the ascistant treasurer of this port. to-day, amounted to $113,387 63, Payments, $12.405 62. Advices, $113,000 00. Balance, $1,249,- a9 71, The Erie Railroad Company have, it is reported, raised seven hundred thousand dollars ($700,000) in | oash by the sales of the seeond mortgage bonds, but ‘pon what terms, has net transpired, as the manage- it refuse all information relative to their financial operations. This looks rather suspiciou! wide margin for the imagination to work upon. If the eompany have not been compelled to submit te the most. exorbitant shave, it would not hesitate to make the terms ofthe transaction publie; and, even if it has, the stoo! holders and bond-holders hat of the ease. The very mystery that is attached to the financial operations of this eoucern, is the best evidence in the world of the outrageous bad management of its affairs. If there is any virtue in oaths, there is some prospect of getting a correct statement of the finanees of this company next January, through the Legislature. | ‘The Manhattan Gas Light Company have declared a dividend of $250 per share on the full stock, and $1 8154 on the scrip, or new stock, payable on tho | 20th inst. ‘There has been a desperate attempt made recently to get up speculative movement inFarmers’Loan, and the bulls have been successful iu inflating prices several per cent; but it appears impossible to get them above pro sent points. Reports have been freely ciroulated in the street that the stock was worth nearly par—that eighty was low for it, and that it was now selling for only fifty | Btato- | per cent ofits real value, The fallacy of the: ments is pretty well illustrated by the annexed table of shares of stock held—we do not say owned—by each of | the Board of Directors :— Faamans’ Loan axon Trust Comrany, is Curtis J. W. Alsop... ©. Dubois... Henry Coit. D. dD. Williamson, IseneT' J.J. Van Alen. J. W. Havens. named in trust, and it is not known how many shares they are the actual owners of. It is generally supposed that the directors of this, as well as of every other company | in the country, know more about the internal affairs than other stockhélders, and the supposition is, that if the stock of the Farmers’ Loan was worth as much or more than the market pries, the Board of Directors would be larger helders than the above list represents ‘Twelve director, according to the above statement, | hold only 140 shares of stock. This does not look as though the stock was worth what it is now selling at. The cireulation has fallen of more in proportion than the specie on hand, whilo the deposits have been in- $13,200 08 ereaced, Bank returns from all parts of the country | show a very gront increase in the deposits, which we attribute entirely to the abun: of unemployed enpitel. The inactivity of business, and the modorate demand existing for money, have increased the do- posite of all the banks, and reduced their circulation. Most of them continue te keep their lines of dis- eount, and declare good dividen at whether they earn them or not is e matter we know very little about. The management of the Bank of Kentucky and branches, during the time of the diMculties and om- barracsments growing out of the fray stock by the Schuylktil Bank, reflects the greatest eredit upon the officers and board of directors, and the stoekholders are in a fair way of receiving something for the contraction ef dividends for several years part. The bank has resumed its regular dividends and will hereafter continue them, with whatever extra dividends the proceeds of the sales of property reecived from the Schuylkill Bank may warrant the manage- ment in declaring. P. Madison, Relict of the Late Ex- President Madison. The body of this distinguished lady, was, on Saturday, placed in one of Messrs. Fisk and Ray- mond’s patent metallic coffins, bronzed, with a glass inserted, through which could be seen the face of the deceased, apparently twenty years younger than when infused with vitality. A few flowers were strewn upon this receptacle of the dead—sweet, yet striking emblems of frail mor- tality. On Sunday, young and old, of both sexes, visited the late residence of Mrs. Madison, to be- hold the face over which the veil was soon to be closed forever. To-day, the case was opened, with a view to an embalming process; end the corpse, at eleven o'clock, was conveyed to St. John’s Church, in the same neighborhood, and there placed on a pedestal, in front of the reetor’s desk, within the altar. Hundreds ef ladies and gentlemen, who desired to features, were disappointed, and they contented themselves with gazing on the silver plate. which concealed the face, on which was an laseriplion of her.name, “Dolly Payne Madison.” Belore the ime designated for the funeral, par- ticular spectators were aduiitted. into the chureh, cially reserved for 1s committee of arrangements. them by the judiei We noticed, on the fr: pew, in the centre, sit- ting on either eof the United States District a Attorney, Mr. Gales, of the Zutelligencer, and. Several only of the Ciplomatic corpa, members of the Senate llouse of Representatives, and their officers, and Judges of the Courts, were present; and, with but two or three exceptions, the officers ot ‘the army and navy were not in uniform. The Mayor and Corporation ot Washington, gentlemen employed in the civil departmeats of the governmeat, and citizens und strangers, oceupied the remaining seats. The gallenes of the beeutitul edifice were densely filled with spectators, including no number of the colored race. A plaintive air on the organ, after the congre- gation had quieted, reminded them of the solem- mity of the occasion; and the Kev. Smith Pyne, the recter, assisted by the Rev. G. W. French, appeared, and, together, read the service observe: in the Protestant xscopal Church, on funeral occasions. kg hyr “The Dying Christian,” was sung by the choir, with good effeet; and, after prayer, Mr. Pyne, standing near the e delivered a brief, and peculiarly appropriate ad: dress. Omitting’a detail of the gencalogy ot the deceased, he suid, among other things, that, four years 0 tie appeared before him tor baptism; and, Agee then an aged woman, she was but a babe in Christ. Owing to the untavorable cite cumstances which surrounded Mrs. Madison, much may. be pardoned in her earlier life ; and we should * honor her for what she kept, and com- mieerate her for what she left.” In conversation with the minister on the subject of the visible forme of the church, and the means of grace, she said, “I was not taught to attach importanee to these things; 1 fear that I cannot yield my assent to the extent which you desire ; bat it is not to divest ourselves of early habit J want to do what| right; I am willing, most willing, to be di- rected.” And so meek did #he appear—so guile- less—that he was reminded of the little child whom Jesus set in the midst of the disciples, when he told them that unless they became like it they could not inherit the kingdom of heaven.
