Those that were considered worthless. hare proved the best, and those considered the best will ultimately prove of much less jue than @ present estimated. American stocks have actually been purchased by the Rothschilds ; and those who are acquainted with the bitterness with which the house used to spealc of the course pursued by the people of some of our States—or rather of the course forced upon them by the folly and ignorance of European cupitalists—will have some idea of the revolu- tion which must have been produced befure such a move if ment could have taken place. This is tho age of revolu- tions, and we are not, therefore, astonished at anything, There i- one satisfaction about this thing, which is that the Rothschilds, and all other foreign capi- talists, have to pay @ good rouad premium on seeurities they now purchase, and we ali the Sta bave no doubt they are glad to get them at any prico Compared with the public stocks of safety and profit, they are immeasurably superior, and an immense amount of capital must ultimately be trans- ferred to our shores by the purchase of government, State, and other sound American securities, All this, on the face, is very fine. It is asource of some satisfac- tion to us that European capitalists have been ecompel- led to purchase our stocks at high prices, and it is of some advantage to us that the iromense amount of cupital represented by these evidences of debt, finds employment in our numerous departments of industry; but we must not lose sight of the large drain upon us annually in the way of interest. It is estimated that about one hundred and fitty millions of Amorican recuritics, upon which interest is regularly paid, are now held abroad. This will drain at least nine mil- lions ot dollars from us annually, in the shape of inter- est. Investments are rapidly inczeasiog, and the in- terest of course becoming larger, and there is every prorpect of thie item of exponditure becoming execed- ingly onerous, Ifwe could have confinvd the payment of interest on our own poblic debts tour own limits, the den would perhaps not have become opprea- sivo; but when such large sums are annually drawn from us for interest, they drain us of that we caanot sparo, which, if coutinued for any length of timo, will leave ua very poor indoed. ‘Ten millions of dollars por annum are equal to about one-tenth part of our annual exports, which must be increased te that extent. or a corresponding reduction must be made fa tho importa, to prevent large shipments of specie No couatry can remain prosperous and owo such an immense amount to foreigners, upon which the interest ia regularly paid.
