CHAS. $. J GOODRICH, fi Physician of the Board. IN OTHER PLAC The St. Lotis Repubhitcun of the isease has broken out afresh among us, if we may judge from the fearful list of deaths chronicled for Sa- ‘tnrday or Sunday. Whether this has been owing to the great changes in the weather. the heavy rains and the damp atmosphere, or proceeds trom the disregard of all precautionary measures on the part of the citi- zens, and the neglect of ull proper samitary regalstions by the city authorities, for a week or two past, we leave others to determing, It is quite certain, that the dis ease has increased rapidly within the last tive or six days, and we fear it has been owing very much to the ianprudence of our citizens, in indulging ia the use of Proscribed vegr tables. . It appears from the evidence at the inquest, that the deceased was married to an Amertean by the name of Joseph A. Wiggins. and some diiliculty arose between them respectiog the invrease of their family, as they had uo children. About two months ago, the deceased surprised her husband in bed with another woman, ina house.on the corner of Mott and Cross streets. At this surprise great confusion ensued, and the husband escaped out of the back way, aad the woman also; the deceased tinding her suspicions re- alized in the presence of her husband, while he was arranging bis toilet, drank down a large quantity of muriatic acid, for the purpose of self-deatruction, and then proceeded home to the houre cf her sister. Convicts Under Sentence of Death —We alluded, some few days ago, to the near approach of the execution of Alexander Jones, the black man. on a conviction ef ar- fon, und that of Matthew Wood, on the murder of his wife by poison. These two men, since their sentence and diy set for the execution, which is designated by Jaw to take place to-morrow (Friday), have been vi- sited bya large number of citizens, ‘who have in all, with but very few exceptions, been in favor of the Governor's clemency by eommating their sentence to impriso:ment for life. “The negro Jones is unable to read yet; still he takes much comfort in hearing the hymns rend to him in his cell. by another negro. He farther asserts that-the witnesses against him on the trial, the re tives of his wife, as weil as his wife. were all Catholics, andhe himself wasa Protestant. This very fact, he says, created an unusual degree of bad feeling against him. A few strawberries were brought into prison by the friends of these men yesterday which they re- duced to partake of. fearful that by se doing they might ‘take the cholera and die, Since writing the above, we find, by a telegraphic despatch from Albany. that the Governor bas commuted the sents of the negro Jones to imprisonment in the State prison for life.
