The court room was unusually close end warm, and the odor arising from forty prisoners, some of whom were the veriest loafers that the imagian- tion could conceive. ‘Thos loafers. as they were seated in court, had the appeaarnce of moveable borhives as some thousands of flies. of uli descriptions. from the blue Dottle down to the common house fly all buzzed srouud the heads of these loafers apparently gloating on therioh treat afforded them. Oocasionully, during the process f justice, one or two of these daring insvets would take a flight from the loafer and wlichtou the nose of the magistrate, who would brush him off and exclaim “ Of- ficers open the windows, the room has 4 very kad amell.”? ‘The Justice, however. was not the only one visited by ‘these troublesome customers as they paid almost all in ‘court a visit, more or less, until the losfers were com- ‘mitted. and then all the flies followed after the greatest attraction. In the midst of the crowd of prisoners. a short chunky looking little Irishman was standing. by ‘the name of Timothy Manning, and by his side wore two ugly looking bull terrier dogs, of » very ferocious appearance. Monday, June 18—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was not so buoyant to-day as pre- viously noticed; but fos Monday, full as much s0 a we could expect. There were large sales of the leading fancies, and any quantity of stock is pressing upon the market. Nothing but the great abundance of money, and the reduced sate of interest, enables the bulls to inflate prices at all; and in the event of any contrac- tion in the supply of capital, there must be an immo- diate revulsion in the fancles. At tho first board, Treasury Notes fell off }4 per cent; Erie Railroad, 4; Reading Railroad, X%. United States 5s, 1853, went up 3 per cent; Mlinois ¢s, 14; Canton Company, 114; Har Jem, 1; Farmers’ Loan, 34. Loans are easily made at the rate of four per cent per annum, on cull; and it is pretty difficult to purchase any good stock at prices that will net a much better rate of interest than five per cent, The sub-treasury of this port has been largely drawn on lately, and the doposits havo been reduced to less than one million of dollars. Thi® has compelled the government to issue the balance of the last loan, to put itself in funds to moet the semi- annual interest on the public debt, due on the Ist of July, proximo. ‘The demand for sterling exchange has been only to a fair extent, for the packet leaving Boston on Wed- nerday, as yet, but to-morrow (Tuesday,) the mails close, and there will probably. be more activity. We quote the best bills on London at 9 a 9% per cent; on Paris, 5f. 2734 a 6f. 25; Amsterdam, 40 a 40%; Ham- burg, 054 8 35%; Bremen, 78% a 79. ‘The recvipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer ot this port to-day, amounted to $100,024 91; payments, $40,869 13; balance, $963,182 16, The New York and Harlem Railroad Company wily poy the regular semi-annual dividend of four per cent on the preferred stoek, on the 3d of July. It bas been reported that the Ohio Life & Trust Com, pany has been calling in a portion of its loans of capital. None of these loans have been called in, and none can be called in without two years previous written notice: while the security is sufficient and the interest prompt- ly paid. It is for the interest of the company to con- tinue all safe loans, rather than change them. Calls have lately been made, by the company, upon borrow. ers, principally in Cincinnati. on pledges of stock, &c.; but not upon borrowers of capital. Dol. & Hudson 16h a 105 Be * a7 6180 a 152 Since the middle of May, most of the securities in this lixt havo advanced several por cent, Government stocks have improved more than any others, ‘The quo- tutions now current are for dividend due on tho Ist of July proximo, off, which make tho actual rise three per cent greater than appears by the report of pricos. Mljnois and Indiana bonds have advanced rapidiy; but there are very few on the market, Reading Railroad ftock and bonds have beon in demand, and prives have improved very much, as will be seon by the compara- tive quotations. ‘The great abundangg of monty has created considerable inquiry for good, sound stocks; find 86 Jong as the public mind contfnuds in its present state, ovelything of a fancy nature will be more or less neglected, The fact is, people are getting tired atid fick of those stocks #hich have no real yatuo, and consequently fluctuate so Largely, from time to time, that holders know not whether they will ever again realize their outlay, Many of these fancies hare been upon the market so many years that those who have had hopes of an improvement in value, have lost all patience, and the brokers find their supply every day increasing, so that ultimately they will have to carry the bulk of them, Outsiders havé withdrawn their capi- tal from these fancies, snd placed it where it will be earn- ing something, in government and other good stooks. We do not know what tho brokers will do with the fan- cies, there are so many in the market; and it requires such @ large sum to carry them, at the present prices, that the probability is their own weight will bring thom down, It will be for the interest of the street speo tors to let prices duwn, to induce outsiders to take hold; succeed. We have, now-a-days, none of that reckless speculation of former years, and it is with the utmost dificulty that even an advance of twoor three per cent is produced. As an evidence of the feeling existing among outside speculators—those who give life and tone to the stock market—it is only neces- sary to refer to the low rate of interest for money, and prices for the leading fancies, compared with those current in previous years. The leading railroad stock® rango fifty and sixty per cent below prices ruling three and four years ago, while the works themselves have been extended and improved very largely. Unfortu- nately, the extension and improvement have not been attended with a corresponding increase in revenuo; and in times past, where the surplus earnings were ap- Propriated to the construction of the road, they are now required to meet the payment of interest. With enormous debts, independent of their immense capitals for every doliar earned double that sum, in some in- stances, has to be paid The stockholders stand be- hind two or three classes of indebtedness, and the pro- bability of their realizing anything on the investment, becomes less and less every day. This is one reason why the fancies are so much neglected. The finances of the State of Maryland are improving with the greatest rapidity. The receipts into the Trea- sury have been larger than anticipated, and it is pro- bable that the surplus to be added to the sinking fund will exceed every estimate.
