Progress of the Oholera, IN THIS CITY. Mayor's Orrick, New Yorx, June 14, 1849. ‘The Sanitary Committee of this city report 38 new eases, and 16 deaths. of cholera, as having occurred during the last 24 hours susMany. Cases, Deaths. Disch In Centre street Hospital. eT 1 - In William street Hospital... .... 5 4 - Qn private practice>. . + 26 ln - Total 16 6 report, that the cholera is not advancing. There is, happily, too, an in- verease in the number discharged as cured. In the re- ‘turn they are set down as a total; it would have been <more satisfactory to the public. to give the details as in former returns, stating whether the cured were dis- charged from Centre street or William street hospitals, ‘Those physicians who report cases and deaths in rivate practice, ought ulso to send in returnsof cures, ro aware that their patients often object to any- thing being known about their being attacked with ‘this dixease, but the mere number of cures, without ames, does not involve publicity. ( Laver prom Havana anp Venezvera.—By the steamer Isabel, at Charleston, we have received files of the Diario de la Marina and Gaceta de la Habana to the 8th inst. We find nothing new in them. From Venezuela they had received ac- ‘counts to the 5th May, via Puerto Rico. We re- ceived accounts here a day or two ago, via Cu- acoa, much later; but they did not give the infor- mation so much desired by the observers of Vene- zuelan polities—viz., whether the resignations of the offices of President and Vice President by Monagas and Guzman, had been accepted by Con- ress. By this Puerto Rico account we learn that—* Congress, having nothing left for it to do. wafter refusing to accept the resignations, adjourne on the 3d May ; and in order to provide pecuniary means for the use of the government, previous to -elosing made a decree raising the export duties on many articles of produce hitherto free of such ‘tax. Cacao will hereafter be subject to an export duty of J percent, and other national products 3 per cent on the current prices. Books, prints, and other articles hitherto allowed to enter duty free, are to pay 15 ne cent. All other articles are to be advanced 10 per cent. Duties under $400 to be paid in cash; above that, one month’s credit will be Given, instead of six or eight months, as before.” We presume the refusal to accept the resignations “by Congress, mentioned above, must refer to Mo- nagas’ and Guzman’s eases. Nothing is said about Paez, or his return. He was at Curagoa at our last advices from there. ONE WEEK’S HISTORY. The Weekly Herald will be published at nine o'clock ‘to-morrow morning. Fhe stock market was very unsettled this morning ‘at the opening, and the transactions were limited. It ‘was announced at an early hour, that the Cambria’s mews was coming over the wires, and very little dispo- sition was exhibited to operate, At the first board, Harlem fell off 34 per cent; Canton Company, \; Far- smer’s Loan, 4{; Long Island, 14; Erie Railroad, 4; Erie Bonds, 1g. Morris Canal advanced }4 per cent; Read- ing Railroad, }g; Pennsylvania 5's, 14; United States 0's, 4867, 4; Treasury Notes, 34. Reading Mortgago ‘Bonds have advanced three per cent since last sale. As goon as an extra Herald appeared in the street, an- nouncing an advance in United States 6’s in London, there was more firmness on the part of holdera of stocks generally, and government securities were held at an ‘advance on prices current at the first board, ‘The steamship Cambria does not bring any very im- portant financial or commercial intelligence. United States 6's were selling in Lendon at 110% divivend, or equal to 1073¢ ex-dividend. This is equal to 11634 in this market, a fraction above eurrent prices. This is ‘the most favorable financial news by this arrival. Colton and corn remain about the same as previously report- ed, as regards both demand and prices, Money con- aued abundant, and consols without change. There Was more activity in business generally, but prices for all the leading articles of trade were depressed. Tho Political intelligence is important and interesting, and ‘will absorb the public mind here for a time, to the ex- clusion of everything else except California news. At the second board, Treasury Notes advanced 4 per cent; Harlem, +4; North American Trust, 1%. The sales were small, holders of stocks preferring to wait the receipt of letters, or more detatled public accounts, The receipts at the office of the Assistant Troasiirer of this port, to-day, amount to $55.080; payments, $111,206 23; advices, $5,500; balance, $1,185,261 04, By @ telegraphic despatch from New Orleans, we Jearn of the arrival ¢f the steamship Crescent City at that port, from Chagres, with Inter intelligenee from California, The steamship California arrived at Panama on the 22d of May from San Francisco, which port she left on the Ist of the same month. She brings sixteen days later advices from the gold region, and one ion of dollars worth of gold, This will set the speculators in Wall street crazy, and put the bulls fn fine spirits. Tho Crescent City has on board $500,000 of the roal stuff, and was to leave New Or- jeans for New York on the 16th inst. This is the greatert news we have yet received from the gold country ¥and the receipt of such an immense amount ‘of the precious metal, will confirm the most exaggera- ted accounts published relative to the extent of the amines. More than a hundred of the diggers are on their way home loaded with the pure dust, and we eball soon have it in active circulation among us. ‘The effect of this arrival upon the value of every kind of property will be of the most favorable character, nd we have no doubt a speculative movement in stocks and in real estate to some extent, will soon be ‘realized. The influx of gold from California has just commenced, and the tide will hereafter steadily set in ‘wpon us, until we are completely flooded with it. Up to this time this California business has been an in- Gury to us, by drawing too largely upon our capital and wesources; but now we shall be benefited by it, and it will add immensely to our wealth, ‘The earnings of the New York and Erie Raflroad ‘Company, for the first five months in each of tho past four years, were as annexed :— New York ano Erie Raicroan, 1846, 184 1847, 1849, 15.273 21644 80.340 W7H2L 20.768 43.505 20084 = 23.160 60.073 19.094 = 25.798 62,128 10,608 = 25,181 66,086 Total.......67448 91,990 116,458 261,107 The aggregate receipts in 1848 amounted to $310,- 912 75, from which deduct the earnings of the first five months, and there is left the sum of $194,454 75, as the income of the last seven months of the year, Tho in- crease in the reevipts for the first five months of 1849, compared with 1848, amounts to $144,649—equal to one hundred and twenty-five per cent. ‘The samo per cent 4nocrease for the remaining seven months would give an income, for that time, of $437,523 19—equal to about {$00,000 per month, which, added to the receipts already realized for the first five months, would give a total of $098,690 19 for the year. It will at once be seen that this sum’ will not be sufficient to enable the com- pany to meet its current engagements, such as sunning expenses, interest, &c. It is estimated that tthe receipts for June will amount to $70,000, and that is to give a gross revenue for the year large enough to make both ends meet, The immense amount of indebtedness hanging over this company, upon which the interest is accruing, re- quires a large income annually over and above the run- ning expenses, to meet, and the probability of realising that revenue is at present rather dubious, So far as the most recent reper!s of the company enable us to judge, the amount of indebtedness is a3 annexed :— New Yous ann Enik Raitnoap—Amount or Inver REDNESS. First Mortgage Bonds. Second Mortgage Bon Certificate Bon: Floating Debt. . . New Stock issued Old Stock, consolidate Total. ....ssseccecees ++++$11,850 000 ‘The interest on the first mortgage bonds for thres years from the date of issue, hase been deposited with the Comptroller, so that the interest on about nine millions of dollars this year, has to be provided for by the company. Six per cent interest on the stock. and seven per cent on the bonds issued and floating debt, make an aggregate of $562000, To poy this amouat, the aggregate receipts must be at least $1,164,000, upon the favorable calculation that but fifty per eent of the carnings are required for running expenses and re- pairs, It is, however. our impression that the running expenses and repairs of the Erle railroad will amount to full sixty per cent of the gross receipts; and if so, the income for 1849 must reach the sum of $1,450,000. This is an immense amount, and will no doubt startle and alarm those who have depended upon a regular payment of the interest upon the liabilities of the com- pany; but time, and not a very long time either, will show the truth and correctness of our calculations, It will be recollected that several months since, wo made statements somewhat similar to these, and the time which bas since elapsed has strengthened us in the opinions then expressed. The company havo had nearly six months’ business on the extension road, and none of their estimates have been realize]; and we have as good data for our calculations as the com- pany, or any set of speculators, and we wish to place them side by side, for future reference and comparison. Since our last statement relative te the affairs of this company, an official report has been made by the Board of Directors, extracts from which were given in our columns, without comment, feeling disposed to afford the company the same facilities for giving publicity to its own estimates, &c , as were used in making public our own, This has enabled those interested to judge more correctly for themselves, and will also give them an opportunity to see who has been the most correct in their statements, Those interested will no doubt be somewhat alarmed upon being informed that there is not the slightest probability of the semi-annu- alinterest on the stock due on the lst of January next being paid out of the earnings of the road. We do not mean to say that the next January dividend will not be paid, as the credit of the company is not completely exhausted, and so long as it can issue bonds the interest will be regularly patd; that is, if the com- pany can find purchasers at any reasonable discount. The management may deem it prudent, in considera- tion of the immense cost of the road thus far, and in the absence of sufficient income from its earnings, to stop for a time paying interest, and wait the extension to some more important point on the line, ‘The issue of the second mortgage bonds is going on rapidly, (one and a half millions of the four being al- ready in the market ) When the whole of these bonds is in the market, the total indebtedness of this compa- ny will amount to fifteen millions of dollars, the inte- rest on which will amount annually to $947,000, to pay which, the gross earnings must reach the immense sum @ $2,370,000. The dividend tobe paid on the stock on the Ist of July proximo, must be drawn almost en- tirely from the capital of the company, and go will the interest due on the Ist of November next on the bonds and floating debt. This cannot be sustained, and the best policy for the company to pursue under the cir- cumstances, is to omit one of the semi-annual pay- ments of interost on the stock. If that does notan- swer—if tho earnings will not pay one dividend of three per cent in the year, then drop the whole and let the stock take care of itself. The bends and float- ing debt must be taken care of, and the interest prompt- ly paid, or the company must be declared bankrupt and suspend, As for its bankruptcy, that occurred a long time ago, but the company has been able, by in- creasing its liabilities, to meet its payments, This, however, is not to the purpose; our object at present is to show that the interest or dividends on the stock cannot be paid any longer, without adding largely to the cost of construction, and materially retarding the completion of the work. At present prices, a dividend of three per cent per annum] makes the stock a five per cent investment; and as # large portion of it has not cost holders much above the current price, no one would be very much injured, and the finances of the company would be much improved. We recommend this to the serious consideration of the management, with the firm conviction that nothing else will save the company from an explosion that will depreciate its securities fifty per cent from present prices, Stock Exchange, 1500 US 6 115% $3000 Erie Rds, 7s 101% bdr ale 115% 11000 Rag Mt Bas, 620. 6 1000 do "62 1000” do 69 2000 do QWehsNorw& Wore 38 G00 do "68 17 Read RR 331 cr 50 do 100 do om do 20 Housatonic RR, how A7 59 Canton Co 75 do 300 Morris Canal 50 do 8, 16000 Penn 5's 1000 Tenn 3's 100 do 70 shs Manhattan Co 500 Farmers Trust 10 BI 0 100 Harlem RR , new, full 62° 200 Long Island RE 10 Mohawk Ric 8 30 do 25 do.
