‘tom, Witherton; Eliza Hardy, Miss Hill; end Marian, Miss Williams. It was an excellent performance. The ‘Other entertal: its wore received, as everything at ‘this theatre invariably is, with unmixed gratification. ‘There is one department, of which we have not spok taht, bat which richly deserves the most honorable ‘mention—we mean the orchestral it. The ‘musicians are not numereus, but we think we may, without incurring a c! ¢ of presumption, say that be are — ns aes usic is the ay life aes E ¢ of publie amusement ; it imparta t ad timas chcarfninee oot antoatinn ‘among’ all who come within the reach of its beautiful and inspi- ring sounds. No theatro, no matter how splendid its jons, or how great or transcendant the actors may bein their various walks, without music, would ‘beworth » pinch of snuff. ax the old saying is.’ With- out this aid, which is as charming as it {s indisponsa- ‘ble, there would be, night after night, a “ beggarly ac- count of empty benches.” Tho power of music is irre- ‘sistible; all, except thone whoao souls are made of cork- ‘wood, are influeneed by it On the ensanguined battle field it has often. contributed to victory. A short time ago, in India. a wing of the British army would ‘have been cut to picses in a mountain pass, but for the extraordinary effect which musio had upon the soldiers. Tho fact was, they were so exhausted, and 80 completely beat out by long marches, that’ they ‘Were compelled to lie down; and although their officers told them that if they did not resume their march, the enemy would pour down upon and massacre them, they did not move. At last. the officer commanding Tecollectivg that it was the 17th of March, ordered the ‘band to strike up “ Patrick’s Day.”’ Tho effect was instantaneous: the fatigued soldiors spraug upon their foet, shouldered their arms. avd marched on with light step and willing minds ‘The nest singing in the ‘world would lose two-thirds of its effect but for the musician's art. What would the gay and ber de dance but for music? It is the revivifying and inviger- ating sound of that prince of instruments, the violin, that renders it both gay and merry. Tv the gentle men who compose the musical department of this theatre, ite patrons are mueh indebted fortho many de- lightful treats they have afforded thom, They are un- pretending and unassuming, but they discourse most sweetly, touchingly, and eloquently, through the me- dium of their instruments; and it gives us much plea- sure to pay them this little tribute of well-carned commendation. Vanpernrex’s Concent.—On Thursday evening nex} this grand affair will come off at the Chinese Assembly Rooms, Broadway. The original. bur- leeque, entitled “ Voyage Musicale,’’ ia the most comi- eal performance that the most comical inclined could have any idea of. Persons haveactually come on Purpose from distant parts of the Union, to be presont at it; at least we have been told so. One thing, at all events, is very certain—that unloss these people possess talent, and that to no trifling extent, they could not ‘have retained their hold upon the public mind for so Jong a period, in the course of which they have created -quite a sensation. [From the Pennsylvanian, June 4.] In # long course of professional triumphs, Mr.Forrest will not be able to recall a morasplendid reception than that of Saturday evening. st the Walnut Street The- atre,in this city. The heuse was crowded with a most respectable audience, and the peformance, that of ‘* Othello,” was heard, from the first to the last, with frequent aud prolonged expressions of satis- faction. When Mr Forrest first ‘ppeared, tke wel- come was an unbroken and continuous peal of cheers {and applause, the whole house joining ina tri- bute to the intellect that has overleaped so many diffi- culties, and defeated so many enemies, in his march to fame. Mr. Forrest was evidently much indisposed; some parts of his performance bearing evidence ‘weakness, resulting from recent illness, ag well ot «much suffering, Yet the startling and dazsling earn- estness and beauty of the whele production, was the object ot universal comment. At the close of the play, Mr, Forrest, in obedience to 2 unanimous call from ali parts of the house, came forward, amid a torrent of -spplause, aad addressed the house nearly substantially ‘a8 follows :— “| appear, ladies and gentlemen, in compliance with d thank you heartily for your most fa- flattering reception. It has been a sourco cere anxiety, that I was not able to appear ‘on Monday evening, ax announced; and you cannot Dave failed to perceive, during my performance to- ight, that [ am still laboring under severe indisposi- tion, But I do not come, so much to apologise to those whom I so seldom disappoint, as to thank you, with all my heart, for this glorious and generous reception. {Loud choers and applause]. In the midst of all my trials, it is gratifying to be thus sustained. I have deen aseailed, ladies and gentlemen, by a fiendish combination of enemies. who, not content with strik- ing at my professional effortz, have let let loose their jumnies upon my private character, and invaded the sscred precincts of my home. I will, with God’s blessing, live down the calumnios that would destroy me with my countrymen; and turning neither to the right hand nor to the left hrnd, will fearlessly toil to preserve to the Inst the reputation of an honest and independent American citizen.” ‘When this beautiful address was completed, after ‘having been delivered with touching eloquence, nine cheers wero given, with a will and an enthusiasm that shook the house from dome to foundation; Mr. Forrest retired amid renewed plaudits. The whole evening was one that he caunot fail to remember with grateful pleasure. (From the Ledger, Juno 4] ‘Mr. Forrest, at the Walnut stroct theatre, on Satur- day night, had a good audience, and was enthusiasti- cally received. After the play of “Othello” was over, Mr. F. was called before the curtain, and, after apolo- gising for not appearing on Monday night of last week, -according to announcement, stating it to be the first time that he had ever disappointed an audienae, said, “[ come to thank you with my whole heart for the marked and generous welcome with which you havo eted me to-night- a welcome which, as I take it, is @ signal and triumphant rebuke to those who have not only aimed their malignant and cowardly shafts st mo 4 jonally and personally, but with that venom ‘which is tho inherent quality of their reptile natures, ewith fulechoods and with slanders have invaded the sanctity of the domestic hearth. M. ‘The market for stocks, generally, to-day, was a little more buoyant, Government sccurities were in modo- rate demand; snd tho Loan of 1868 sold at an advance of 2 per cent on Saturday's préees. Pennsylvania and Indiana 6s also improved, The European nows has had a favorable influence upon ail good State stocks, and most of them are held at higher prices. The im- provement reported in London, in all our public secu- rities, is no more than what wo have anticipated, and frequently predicted; and the political diMcultios which are spreading so rapidly over Europe must have a better influence upon our stocks than any yot rea- lized. ‘The bulk of all our pubMo stocks will ultimately be absorbed by forcign capital; and, if they had a longer period to run, they would be much more sought after, and command better prieos. ‘The most unfortu- nate feature of the debt of the general govern- ment is, that it will be paid at maturity. Hold- ers of public stocks are like the individual who told man whe owod him some money, that ifhe could pay, he did not want it, butif he could not, he must have it at once, Justso with State or government stocks. Tho longer they have to run before reaching maturity, the better for the holders, always prowiged the government is solvent, and promptly pays¢he fh- terest when due. For this reason, Pennsylvania State stocks are excéllens permanent investments, as the probability is they will not be paid during tho present century, but the interest will be paid punctually and in full.
