Tux Rerorre Cnounna ix tue City,—As might have ‘been expected, a proper investigation into the report of the cholora having appeared in the city, puts the whole matter intoan entirely different light. Evory one is aware of the horribly filthy condition of the locality where it is said to exist; but there are other causes which would lead to sudden death as well as cholera; and when the facts are known, the only wonder that can arise will be, that some fatal pestilence had not long ago a The place where these supposed cases of cholera appeared, 1s the back basement (under ground) of a miserable hovel, surrounded by every description ‘of filth, the stench from which alone is ‘sufficient to ison the atmosphere around. and desolate its vicinity, ‘or three weeks prior to the attention of the corpo- rate authorities having been called to this place, the inhabitants thereof, some thirty or forty in number, were ina regular debauch—without food. aud subsist- ing only on the diluted and poisonous liquid sold in that violnity. The disease made its appearance some six or cight days since, but was not thought to be cho- lera, A clergyman of the Roman Catholic church visit- ed tho piace for three days successively, but the in- mates were so inebriated that he could learn nothing of them, save the miserable condition in which he found them’ Tho subject was then laid before the proper au- thority, and an investigation disclosed the facts as above stated. Tho room was perfectly destitute of furniture, ‘and the inmates were stretched upon the damp floor, naked and starving, surrounded by an atmosphere. the ‘very breath of which was poisonous to inhale. Alarm wt-once seized hold of some, and like wildfire the report that the cholera was abroad in the city; and as Gf to feed the excitement which "such s report caused, ‘and spread alarm when little or no danger was to be Spprehended, another report was yesterday morning made to the City Inspector, that five or six new cases had ocourred, one of whom fell in the street. Such ‘was not the fact. Bnt two cases had occurred within thirty-six hours, up to noon of yesterday—and one of ‘that number, a woman. had been turned into the street. Jn the immediate vicinity of the hovel where the sickness prevails, and on three lots of ground, are confined one hundred and sixty hogs, the stench from swhich in 90 confined a locality is enough to produce a lague ef deadly form. There is a law Date lating the Keeping ot hogs within the limits of the city, and cer- tain it is that no statute can be found to allow fifty- three hogs to be kept on a lot of ground 25 by 100 feet, even it there be no building upon it, The pens are all built in strict conformity to the law. and the conse- uence was that no notice whatever has buen taken of 2 ‘A peremptory order hag now been fasued to have cali the hogs removed forthwith, and clease the premises by the proper disinfecting agencies. This dono, there dg no longer need of fear, and the exaggirated state- ments which have been made will full to the ground, roducing no other effect than to make the people Believe that some sinister motive, or great. igno- tance of the true disease, has given circulation to such alarming reports. ‘The eascs on hand on Wed- mesday evening were convalescent yesterday, even in that filthy place. The wo! who was turned into ‘she street was conveyed to a large room, over a bowling saloen in Anthony street, when. but for the police, a regular emeute woul@have taken place. All the women of the neighborhood turned out with broomsticks and pan handles, to prevent her ine lodged near them, cand it was necossary to guard the door to prevent her deing thrown again in the street. She was removed ‘from that place to the Alms House. whore admittance nd, by order of the Mayor, was returned to the room in Anthony street. Those persons who live ina condition but little better than tho den in ‘Orange street, are most clamorous against the action of the authorities in providing a place near them for the accommodation of those who are sick, while their own wemises are one unbrokem mass of filth. and four or ire hog pens at their very doors. The authorities are determined to put every part of the city ina proper condition, regardless of the remonstrance of any one, cand surely that place where they have begun, the Five Points, needs renovation more than all the rest beside, A few days will probably suffice to satisfy the most sceptical that there is not, nor has there been, a case of Asiatic cholera in the city during the Spring. ‘The appearance of the disease in the city would be just cause for fearful apprehensions and alarm; and ‘until it is known that it is really amongst us, no one bould for a moment think of spreading a rumor which ‘would so much militate against the commercial and other business pursuits of the city. About half-past ‘ight o'clock last night, another case of the disease was anneunced, and one death. Several of those among the first attacked have been removed tu the room in An- thony street, whére they will be properly provided for. It may be well to add here, that few or none of the cases which have occurred have been attended with cramp, the invariable attendant upon Asiatic cholera. Ellen Callahan and her brother, children of James and Brid- t Callahan, who died at No. 20 Urange street, on Wednesday, aro among the patients, Mary Leouard, of No. 59 Cross street, was also one of the number, Ansivensany or tHe New Truity Cauncn.—Tho third anniversary of Trinity Church was oolebrated yesterday. The sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was administered by the Right Rev. Bishop Delancy, as- sisted by several clergymen, after which the anuiver- sary sermon was preached by the Rector, Rev. Dr. Ber- rian, from the Ist and 2d verses. 14th chapter of the b Go ohn—‘Let not your hearts be trou- ‘dled; ye ia God; believe also in me, In my Father's house are many mansions,” &e. The te deum and benedictus were performed by the choir in mi ficent style. The children attached to the Sabj ‘ath school of the church were present. After the sor- ‘vice, the whole [school left for the the village of Mor- . whore they spent the afternoon, and returned at six e’clock. The exercises were of a very interesting cbaracter throughout, and attended by a very largo oncourse of persons. Rentixc of THE Pews or tHe University Craps ‘The Chapel of the University has come under the oral charge of the Rev, Dr. Hawks; and last night was set apart for the renting of the pews for the ensuing year. There were quite a number of persons in at- tendance, and the bids commenced with considerable spirit, which, however. did not last long, and many were taken privately, at the assessed valuation. The following were those which brought premiums :—, Valuation. — Premum. ‘No. 80—Mr. Furnace. . . $10 No. 81—Mr. Swan....... 10 t 12 50 No. 60 and 61—Mr. Hyde No 70—Mr. J. G. King... Police Intelligence. Charge of Conspiracy to Defraud —Officers Walling and Shadbolt, of the lower police, arrested. yesterday, F. D. James aud Henry L. Bulkley, on warrant ixsued by Justice Lothrop, wherein. they stand charged with defrauding ‘Thomas §. Hamblin and others out of $500 and upwerds, It appears that Mr James and Mr. Bulk- ley have been connected with the Camden Insurance ‘Company. ‘The former a large stockholder, and the lat- ter was eccretary of the company as well asa large stock- holder. This insurance company, it seems, was char- tered by the New Jersey Legislature in tho year 1832, jut no action was had under their charter until the ‘year 1847. When the company was organized the capital Boek of the company was to be $100,000. and $25.000 was required to be actually paid in, This stock or capi- tal was mado up by different individuals depositing pro- missory notes at six months, {0 this way the company ‘went into operation, locating their #ffice at Camden, N. J, and establishing an agency at No. 72 Wall atrest, in this city. Mr. Hamblin when he fitted up the Park ‘Theatre, procured an insurance in this company to the amount of $4,000, paying @ premium of $240. The theatre was subsequently consumed by fire, and an application was made for the insurance ; but the company was unable to Since which time, the Assumbly of New Je appointed & com- snmittee to investigate tho whole affairs of ‘this company. and in conformity, a roport was made on the 26th of February last, in which the committes recommended that trustees be appointed ts take charge of its business. and collect its asset< and apply them to ‘the payment of ita debts, It is alleged aow, that the company was a fraudulent concern, und the receiving premiums when they had not the means to pay. was Jne of false pretences. MONEY MARKET. Thursday, May 17—6 P. M. ‘The advance of yesterday in the stock market has not been maintained. The fancies were heavy to-da; and prices declined. At the first board, Harlem fell off $% per cent; Canton Company 9; Long Island, Erie Railroad, $;; Farmer’s Loan, 44. Transactions were only toa modemte extent. The stock market is in a very curious condition, considering the abundance ofmoney, and thereduced rate of interestruling. Loans oncallandshorttimeareeasily obtained at sixpercent, and there are more offers made at thisrate than takers; notwithstanding which, there is no disposition to spec- ulate in stocks. It fs the opinion of many, that the appearance of the cholera in this city would depress prices for stocks, but the effect of the visitation of that disease has already been anticipated. It would be dif- ficult to produce more apathy in the stock market than already exists, and the easy state of the money market will enable holders to carry the fancies without much lors in the shape of interest. ‘The receipts to-day, at the office of the Assistant Treasurer, were $45,031; paymonts, $134,183 44; ad- vices, $45,000; balance, $2,101,378 15, ‘The Citizen's Fire Insurance Company, formerly the ‘Williamsburg, have declared a dividend of six per cent. The Mercantile Marine Insurance Company, of Bos- ton, have declared a semi-annual dividend of four per cent. Quite a large amount of notes, altered from some de- funct Michigan wild-cat bank, to the “Stark Bank,” Bennington, Vermont, are in circulation in the West- ern part of this State. The name of the bank is re- moved from the bill by some process, and “Stark Bank” substituted—as is also “Michigan,” before Safo- ty Fund, on the top of the note, and “Vermont” print- ed in its place. The New York and New Haven Railroad Company have covenanted to pay tho Hartford and New Haven Company $5,000 s year for twonty years, in considera- tion of the withdrawal of the boats of the latter from the Soupd route, and uniting their trains at the station house of the former. Ata meeting of the block committees of Philadel- phia, appointed to solicit subscriptions to the Pennsyl- vania Central Railroad, it was ascertained that upwards of six thousand shares had been subscribed for, amount- ing to over $300,000. A number of the committees had not reported. We hope such efforts will be made as will secure the completion of this important work. ‘The sale of Illinois and Michigan canal lands is now taking place at Chicago. The lots on the west side of the river are now being sold; and quite a crowd of persons attends the sales, which are made upon the ground. A great many farmers and others along the line of the canal are awaiting the putting up of their claims, agall the lands advertised in Chicago will be sold ‘The sales of Chicago lots do not go off very briskly, partly because of the stringency in the money market, and partly because the lots are not so desirable as those offered at the former sale, and do not consequently so much excite the attention of speculators. We are glad to hear that the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is doing a much larger business this season than ever before. Six weeks prior to the time of the opening of business on the canal this spring, the receipts of flour at Williamsport alone averaged about one thou- sand barrels per day. ‘This, it is represented, has boen one of the most favorable scasons, in every respect, that the canal ever had. Thero has been no damage from freshots to interrupt its business, and the recent appro- priation of $200,000, made by the Legislature of Vir- ginia, to be expended in providing securely against future damages, has given those interested in this work universal confidence in its ultimate productiveness. ‘The newly incorporated town of Chicopee, formerly a part of Springfield, is situated about four miles north of Springfield, and is a very flourishing town. There are eleven cotton mills, owned by the Chicopee, Cabot, Por- kins and Dwight Corporations. The Chicopee Corpo- ration has 4 mills, 22,544 spindles, with @ capital of $700,000 ; the Cabot Corporation has 2 mills, 14.000 spindles, with a capital of $600 000; the Perkins Corpo- ration has 2 mills, 14,000 spindles, with # capital of $500,000; the Dwight Corporation has 3 mills, 25,920 spindles, with a capital of $700000. The mills give employment to about 2,400 operatives. Aggrogate spindles, 76,404; capital, $2,400,000. In the assets tho return shows an increase of other securities of £43,490; a decrease of reserve ef notes of £167,755; an increase of gold and silver coin of £43,- O11; and’an increase in the government securities of £5,028. ‘The bullion in the issue and_bankin, together, amounted to £14,385,569, which, with £14,609,888, the amount of the p week's return, shows # decrease of £124,329. ‘The notes and post bills in circulation, together, amounted to £20,- 197,092, which, as compared with £20.210014, the amount of the previous week's return, shows a decrease of £12.32. With the numerous large arrivals of bullion in Eng- land, from South America, Mexico. and California, it is extraordinary circumstance, that the supply in the nk of England should be falling off, The exports to the United States have been less than four hundred and fifty thousand pounds sterling. while to other parts thoy have been limited. The circulation on the 28th of April, was much larger than at vither of the previous periods named in the above statement, Sinoe October last, tho actual circulation has increased £1,582,885, while the bullion on hand had ineroased in the same time £778,650. These changes appear, on this side of the Atlantic, very great, but they do not seem to have had much effect upon ‘the money markots of Great Britain. The rate of discount in Londen for first class paper, was below the bank rate of three per cent, Thi a prevented any increase in the securities of the bank.
