MONEY ¥ MARKET. ‘Wednesday, May 16—6 P. The stock market was more bouyant to-day, and quotations for stocks generally, advanced a fraction. ‘The transactions were unusually large, and principally for cash or on time, seller's option. This is indicative of ® better feeling among operators, and shows the strength and confidence of purchasers. At the first board, Treasury notes improved 4 per cent; United States 6's, 1868, 36; New Haven Railroad, %; Canton Company, %{; Farmer's Loan, 34; Long Island, X; Harlem, X; Erie Railroad, 1. At the second board, Harlem advanced 3{ por cent; Canton Company };. The receipts to-day, at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, were $30,130 54; payments, $1,824 88; advices, $75,000; balance on hand, $2,193,- 536 59. The news from Europe, by the steamship Canada, one ‘week later,is rather more favorable, financially and commercially, than that received by the Hibernia. ‘The advance in cotton was one of the results of a de- preciation in prices for breadstuffs. Quotations for British and French funds had improved, and the amount of specie in the Bank of England had not been Aiminished by the shipments to this country, while the amount in the Bank of France had been largely increased. The total amount of gold exported from England to the United States, including the £25,900 on board the Canada, was £436,900, equal to $2,134,596. This about closes the movement, and if we can keep what we have received, we shall do much better than weanticipate. The political disturbances on the con- tinent continue. As they extend, the larger powers ‘will be drawn into the conflict, and tho result will, ‘without doubt, be a general war. Thus far they have not interfered with commercial movements, except in the Baltic; but in the event of the principal mercantile powers becoming engaged, the effect upon trade must be most disastrous. Counterfeit 20's, on the Stark Bank of Bennington, Vermont, are in circulation, Vig.—Farming im- plements and railroad cars; on right lower corner “XX,” upper corner, 20 ;’? on the left, female and @aglo—spread eagle between officers’ signatures. The swords “Stark Bunk” seem to be printed over an era- sure on the bill. Also 50’s on the State Bank, Newark, New Jersey. We learn this isa very dangerous coun- terfeit, and that many good judges have been deceived dy their resemblance to the genuine. 3’s on New Haven County Bank, Connecticut; vignette, ship, sheaf of wheat, and three females. Washington on the tight. Our quotations of yesterday, for sterling exchange, were barely sustained to-day, and the market closed heavy. Prime bills on London were sold at 7K a8 per cent premium. On Paris, 5f. 264 a 5f. 25. The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company have call- ed for an instalment of $25 per share on their new or scrip stock, payable on the 12th of June, The Bowery Fire Insurance Company have declared .@ semi-annual dividend of ten per cent, payable on the Ast of June, ‘The Canal Commissioners have advertised for a loan of $1,789,024 76, to be applied to the redemption ef the seven per cent bonds maturing during the present year. Proposals will be received for any sum not less than $1,000. The loan will bear interest at the rate of six per cent per annum, payable quarterly, at New York or Albany, and the principal will be reimbursable on the dst of July, 1865. At an adjourned meeting of the stockholders of the Morris Canal Company, held at Jersey City, yesterday, it was dctermined on toaceept the supplementary act, go faras relates to the issue of preferred stock, for the Liquidation of the outstanding debt, and fer raising a sum sufficient to complete the contemplated improve- ments in the canal, &c. It was also agreed that no re- duction should be made in the number of shares repre- sonting the capital of the company. This is perfectly aight, for simply one season, It is estimated that he earnings of the canal will, after the improvements (proposed are made, pay a handsome dividend on the present capital, and uponthe prefered stock; and for that reason we see no justice in reducing the number ofshares of the old stock, but think they should remain as they mow are, to give the holders every opportunity of being hereaftcr remunerated for their long privation of divi- dends. ‘We learn that this canal is now doing a large busi- ess, and, it isconfidently believed, will, before the lapse of many years, with proper management, rank high ‘among the internal improvements of the country. Increase, 1849, Decrease, 1519, Itappears, by this statement, that the shipments this year have been very large, compared with last year, the bulk of which has been forwarded from this port. Ad- vices from Europe by the last twoor three steamers have not been sufficiently favorable to give much im- pulse to shipments, while the resumption of navigation with the interior has increased our supplies and de- pressed prices in this market. ‘The shipments of breadstuffs, &c., from Philadelphia and Baltimore, have been as annexed:— Exronts raom Pas.apenriia—lsr to Lite Maw, To Chilian Ports.—Flour, 60 bbls.; ship bread, 93 do.; naval stores, 76 do.; peas, 75 bushels; oats, 200 do.; rice, 60 tes.; domestics, 10 bales; paper, 4il reams; hanis, 2,500 Ibs.; lard, 250 do.; soap, 1,875 do.; pepper, 6,331 ‘40. tea, 480 do.; nails, 4500 do.; sperm candles, 1,326 di To Columbian Ports.—Flour, 1,070 bbls.; corn meal, 30 do ; rye meal, 20 do.; naval stores, 400 do.; muck- erel, 6 d0.; corn, 2,988 bushels; rice, 10° tes.; tobacco, 11 bhas,; brandy, 300 gallons; hams, 0,047 Tos.; lard, 7,324 do. butter, 1,775 do.; sperm candles, 2,007 do. soap, $0,452 do,; candles, 0.871 do; codtish, 1,500 do.; tobacco, manuf’d, 1,692 do. The export trade of Philadelphia and Baltimore is almost entirely confined to the ports of South America and the West Indies, The shipments of breadstuffs from those porte have at all times been large, as the grain produced in the Southern section of this country is better adapted to the climate of South America, than that of our more northern latitude.
