Bleecker, Trea- surer ; G. L. Lewis, Roll Keeper. The actual debt of the State of Michigan amounts to $2,516,533 43, to meet which the State has $900,000, ex- clusive of revenue derivable from the State tax or other sources. ‘The annual report of the Lehigh Coal and Naviga- tion Company gives a very favorable statement of tho affairs of the concern and the operations of the past year. The receipts and expenditures were as annex- ed :— Lemicu Coat anv Navigation Company—Ixcome anv Exper: ‘Water rents, ground rents, &e . . $32,710 Net profit on coal sold in 1848...... 132.116 Net tolls for 1848 ........4. . 308,894 Total rovenuc, 1848. . 6... 60 ses ees o $473,720 Expenses of repairs and interest, for 1848... | . 397,663 Net income, 1848...... sss $76,057 ‘The whole amount of the capital stock of the com- pany is $1,508,550, being 30.071 shares of $50 ench. ‘The only toan of the company convertible into capital stock, is a portion, viz: $196,509 39, of the mortgage Joan, The following shows the comparative indebtedness of the company on the 1st of January, 1848 and 1849:— Lemon Coat axp Navigation Compaxy—Acorecate Inpentrpw: Jan.1,'48. "The coal from the Company's Tamaqua mines, for the year 1848, amounted to 24,050 tons—showing an in- serease of 7,304 tons over tho preceding year. The transportation of lumber reached 31,079,781 feet, being an increase of nearly 1,000,000 of feet beyond the quantity for the year 1847. It is estimated that not less than 800,000 tons of coal will be brought down from the Lehigh region be- fore the close of navigation next fall, but much depends upon the result of the strike among the workmen, on the canal and in the mines. It is stated that a transfer of a majority of the stock -of the Michigan Southern Railroad Company is about to be, or has been, made to « number of Eastern capi- talists, associated with the Toledo interest, which will place the road in their hands, It is said the road is to be re-laid with a heavy T rail, and extended on through the southern tier of counties, and eventually as far as Chicago. In connection with this, an effort is being made to connect Toledo with Dunkirk, by a road round the south shore of Lake Erie. When these improve- ments are completed, there will be a continuous line of oad from New York city to Chicago, The Nashville snd Chattanooga Rallroad is about being put under contract. This road crosses all the «mountains dividing the Atlantic from the valley of the Mississippi. The construction of this road is of vast importance to Savannah and Charleston, as it will com- plete the connection between these cities and the West, ‘The customs’ receipts of Liverpool show a largo in- crease, and almost keep pace with tho increase of the tonnage of the port. It will be borne in mind that the corn-laws wore totally re- pealed on tho 1st of February in this year, which ron- ders the increase mucn more striking.’ There were 7,000 bales and cases of domestic cotton goods, valued at $333,420 26, exported from Boston to foreign ports, in the first four months of this year, against 15,001 bales and cases, valued at $721,006 93, for the corresponding period last year. ‘The carnings of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Compeny for the month of March, from the Main Stem and the V ond for the month of April, to $126,163 36. This the largest month’s revenue that bas been received since the opening of tho rond, The tonnage westward from Ballimore to adi points on tho road for the month was 6,564, and the revenue therefrom $28,329 24 ‘The extension of this road is rapidly progtosalng. At ‘a mocting of the directors of this road, recently held, » report of the committes on construction and recon- struction was mado, which stated that « further lotting woukl take place in a few weeks, amd the whole line from Cumberiand to Fairmout of contractors, and in » state of advancement, be- fore the close of the present summer. the Board. that all the difficult sections of this road were between Cumberland and Fairmount, on the Mo- nongabela river, and in order to equalize the labor upon the extended line, it might be necessary to consume at least ono year in forwarding these see ions, ia order that the whole might be brought to a close at the same time, without unnecessary loss of interest to the com- pany. after the 1st of June, 1850, the whole line from Cumberland to the city of Wheeling, might be comple- ted in twoyears, But should the company be compelled to depend upon its own resources, of course & much longer time would be :equired than that indicated. ‘The estimates based upon the instrumental surveys upon tho exten ed line from Cumberland to Wheeling, vis Fish Creek, have placed the total cost at a sum not exceeding $6,865.012, from which, deducting the sub- scription of the city of Wheeling, leaves to be provided s the entire amount required to complete the connection with the Ohio river. believed tobe full. an | vas so reprosented by the Chicf Engineer, who expressed the opinion, that the actual cost of the work might fall “considerably” within this From the small averages for the right of way throug Virgina iccently reported, and the savings upon the estimates, a indicated by the recent letting, it is hoped that the amount to be accomplished will not exceed $6,000,000. The difference between the route which has been adopted by this company under tho law of 1847, and the route commonly called “Knight's route,’ has been more than once explained to the public, diverged from the valley of Fish Creek, at a point 30 miles from its mouth, and crossed the rugged country intervening between that point and Wheeling. altogether objecti-nablo on account of its general fea- tures and tho amount of capital involved in its prose- cution, But the route adopted by the company coin- cides with the company’s preferred route to Fishing creck, tos point within 60 miles of the Ohio rivor— thence it pursues a favorable line along the valloys of Piles’ Fork of Buffalo creek, and of Fish creek, to the mouth of the latter. 16 miles above Fishing Crock, and 22 miles below Wheeling, and thence passes up the fine valley of the Ohio river to Wheeling. In the selection and final location of their route to the Ohio river, this company have left nothing un- done which the most abundant caution could have suggested. They have looked closely to the interests of the stockholders and the community. Every foot of ground between Cumberland and the Ohio river had been carefully and diligently explored by the engi neer corps of this company. But the board did not They called to their aid two of the most eminent and practical engineers in this country; and it was not until the whole ground was re- examined by them, and a report made to the board, that the present route was finally adopted. be proper to state furthor, that the chief engineor of this company and the consulting engineers, thus em- Floyed to co-operate with him, were unanimous in the recommendation upon which tho board finally acted. This company has now the shortest and most direct line to the trade for which they had been so long striving. Columbus 1s the point at which the New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland lines must eventu- ally meet, in competition for the central Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri trade. This road had never looked toCleaveland on the Lakes, more, by the company’s route, the distance {s 518 miles; and from the same point to Philadelphia, by the cen- tral road, when finished, 579 miles. of the Baltimore route, 61 miles, which might be in- creased to 71 miles, by the adoption of the Knobly route hereafter, as a second track for passenger busi- Baltimore will be nearer to Cincinnati by 259 miles, than New York, by the Erie railroad and Dun- kirk, and 55 miles nearer than Philadelphia, on her shortest route through Pittsburgh. ‘As this road extends west, it taps the immense tracts of Cumberland coal, and at once opens a mar- ket for this valuable and, to our ocean steam naviga- tion companies, important fuel. This coal is peculiarly adapted to ocean steamers; and it has heretofore been difficult to obtain a large supply, in consequence of the absence of sufficient facilities to get it from the mines Stock Exchange. 2 abs Harlem RR 0 + be in the hands PAA AAI \CTABLE PROTESTANT GIRL WISHES A as Nurse, and to do plain stress, or to go travelling wil ake charge of an infa It was stated at RARE CHANCE FOR A PROFITABLE INVBST- ment —00 Agents wanted to sells new and te, article, which will meet with a rapid sale in all seotio the Union.
