Mr Sweet sold his place in New Jerse, Mr. Randolph. and for the last y toa has been an entire strauger to what has been done upon the premises, and with the same propriety you might as well accuse any other person going from this city to California, with being concerned with it. as to accuse Mr, Sweot, as Mr. Sweet has hot occupied the place for more than one year, and has not been the owner for the last six months. In justice to Mr Sweet and his friends, I trust you will give the above a place in your paper A FRIEND. The slight improvement in breadstuffs is more than annulled by the deprecia- tion in cotton, the inactivity in the manufactur. ing districts, and the disturbances on the conti- nent. Increase this year, $103.691. ‘The receipts of the Old Colony Railroad Company, for April this year, were $24.380 27, against $17,869 18 for the corresponding period last year, showing an in- crease of $6,511 09, equal to thirty-five per cent. The packet ship Zurich, from Havre, brings $16,500 in specie, By an arrival at New Orleans, $30.000 in specie were received from the Rio Grande; $53,000 were also received at that port from Vera Cruz. For the week ending the 22d of April, the sales of cotton at New Orleans amounted to 65,000 bales, said to be the largest week's business in this staple ever transacted in that city. This activity is ina great degree attributed to the complexion of the accounts received from the interior, relative to the injtry done to the growing plant by the late heavy frosts, which, it is thought, may seriously injure the coming crop. It appears by the last annual report of the Comp- troller of the State of Connecticut, that the balance of money in the State Treasury on the Ist of April, 1849, including $13,000 borrowed within the year from the school fund, was $20,241 96.
