See advertisement in anoth COMMERCIAL AFFAIRS. MONEY MARKET, ‘Tuesday, May 1—6 P. M. The stock market was not so active or so buoyant to-day. Government and State securities werein de- mand at better prices; but the fancies were heavy, and there appears to be no speculative feeling in the street. At the first board, Treasury notes went up per cent; United States 6's, 1868, 4; Pennsylvania 6’s, \; Erio Railroad, new, 3, old, . Long Island fell off 34; Harlem, 4{; Canton Company, 4s. All othsrs closed at prices current yesterday, The money market varies almost daily. Notwithstanding the rapid accumula- tion of specie in the banks, money is not so abundant as anticipated from such a movement, and loans on treasury notes are easily made at seven per cent, The receipt of the specie on board the America, may make things more buoyant, and give a slight impetus to speculation. If that fail, the bulls might as well abandon all hope of any great improvement in prices for faney stocks, at least for this season. The demand for sterling exchange, to-day, has not een very active; and drawers are firm at a slight im- provement in quotations. The bost bills on London re held at 8 a8 percent premium; but there are good bills on the market selling as low as6 a 6X per cent premium, Bills on Paris we quote at 5f. 30 a 5f. 25, Amsterdam, 39% 9 39%. Hamburg, Bremen, 77% ® 7734. ‘The steamship Southerner, from Charleston, brought $36,200 in specie. It is said, on what we believe to be good authority, that Governor French, of Ilinols, has come to the con- clusion that he docs not possess, under the constitution, the power to appoint a Senator to fill the place to which Gen. Shields was elected last winter, and which he did fill several days before his ineligibility was de- termined by the Senate. If this be so, necessarily be a called session of the Legislature. This will be good news to holders of Illinois sccurities, and to those who are anxious to obtain charters for the construction of railroads through that State. The directors of the Rochester and Lockport Rail- road held a meeting at Rochester last week, and deter- mined to push their work forward with all practicable ispatch. It being necessary to secure the taking of $200,000 worth of stock over and above what is already taken, measures were adopted to effect this without de- lay. An instalment of five per cent of the subserip- tions to thestock of the road is made, payable on the 15th June, after which the work will be pushed with increased rapidity. The bids for the loan of $100,000, put forth by the Commissioners of the Canal Fund, by virtue of the act for the payment of damages on the canals prior to June ‘Ast, 1846, were received and opened yesterday, in Al- pany. This loan bears an interest of 6 per cent per annum, payable quarterly, and the principal is reim- bursable on the Ist of July, 1864. The aggregate bids were more than five times the amount wanted. Our impression is that the aggregate exportation of gold from Sum Francisco, up to the latest date, amounted to full two millions of dollars. It must be borne in mind that these shipments are entirely from the digging of last year, from June to Decomber, a period of six months, equal to about one hundred and fifty working days, and the product of the labor of fifteen hundred mon, From the best estimates which have been formed, the total product amounts to between three and four millions of dollars, from which deduct the export. and there re- main in the hands of the people of California, be- tween one aud two millions of dollars. ‘This is by uo means an over estimate, Such is the result, derived from the best authority, of the proceodings in the gold region for the year 1848, We are now about commene ing operations for the year 1549, Since the Ist of December last, according to au ac- count kept in this office, throe hundred and twenty- five vessels havo left the Atlantic ports of this country for our possessions in the Pacific, and twenty thousand people have left our shores for the shores of California allintent upon digging gold, or the acquisition of the dust in ono way or another. ‘Theso people have yous well provided with facilitios for extracting the gold from the soil, and we have no doubt the diggers will average ® greater sum per head than realizod duriug the season of 1848. The average product por head in 1848, was about one ounce of gold per day. ‘This was (ery ne} in that section of country is inexhaustible, as wo havo 3434 & 34%. | qe losses on the first artivals must, however, bo heavy, there must | thot the time to go into this, | 10,000 | ire invited to participate in th obtained under all the disadvantages connected with a new discovery, and in the absence of proper moans for extracting gold from the wet and dry diggings, ‘Thoso difficulties have all been removed, and the soil will be most thoroughly searched for the ore, by the machinery and fucilities the genius of our people has provided We have heretofore shown, by calculations based upon the result of last year's labor, that the product for 1849 must be equal to one hundred millions of dol- lars of gold dust. To obtain this immenso sum it will require the labor of thirty thousand men for two hundred days, at the samo rate per head realized in 1848, This is not an over calculation, and we seo no reason to doubt its accuracy. If the supply of gold every evidence in the world to suppose it is, there is no limit to the production. Suppose, however, ono- half of this amount should be obtainod—say fifty mil- lions of dollars—it will be an immense accession to the specie currency of the world. In any view that can be taken of this affair, it appears one of immense magni- tude and importance—one which will work a great revolution in the commercial history of the country, and give us great impetus towards that ascondency in the financial world, which we are destined, sooner or later, to achieve, With this favorable state of things we must ex- pect some reverses, With all the prosperity, there will be many cases of individual ruin. Disasters will overtake many who have embarked in this enterprise with the most sanguine anticipations. Late advices from San Francisco—March 3d—state that the markets of California were literally glutted with goods of all kinds, and that groceries, visions, &¢., were a complete drug—no sales, no purchases, and prices very much depreciated— that the papers of San Francisco were filled with adver- tisements of ships, merchandise, provisions, &. for sale. This looks rather gloomy for those who have made shipments of merchandise, &c., from this part of the country to California, but looks very favorable for those who have left for the purpose of digging gold, as tho expenses of living will be much reduced, and adventurers will be able to accumulate the gold dust more rapidly for their individual benefit. On the first of March, not one of the 325 vessels which haye loft the Atlantic ports since the first of December last, had ar- rived ; and if thore was @ plethora of goods and provi- sions previous to the arrival of any of these vessels, the supply would be largely increased upon their arri- yal. Fortunately, cash of theso vessels carry with them a large body of consumers; and as the population of that country must be rapidly increasing, the markets must, if the shipments are not kept up, in a short time be cleaned out, and prices again become exorbitant.- pro- and many will, doubtless, be ruined. Houses hero have gone deeply into this business; have employod all their capital and extended their credit for the purpose of making shipments, in the hopo of realizing enormous profits. The prospect at prosent is rather discourag- ing, and we expect for a time tho California trade SPECIAL NOTICES. 0. OF 0. There are speculators, however, who will, no doubt, avail themselves of this lull in the movement to make shipments, with the knowledge a6 woll as into anything else of the kind, is when it has been generally aban- doned. Some time since, we were informed that a com pany had been formed here for the purpose of despatch- ing an agent to San Francisco to purchase goods for the markets of the Pacific, for the purpose of sending goods from San Francisco to Valparaiso, and other ports, which have beon drained to supply California, Asinsane as such @ movement might have appeared at the time, it was based upon pretty shrewd calcu- lations, and the result is likely to be exeeedingly pro- fitable. As anevitence of the recklessness with which many have gone into the shipment of merchandise to California, it is only necessary to state that an im- mense quantity of shawls have been sent out, when it was well known that the female population of that country is, and for along time will be, very small. The time is not far distant, however, when markets, to any extent, for almost every description of merchandise, &c., will be found in California, at remuncrating prices; but we have been in too much hasto, and have antici- pated a demand which will hardly be realized for years.
