The reecipts this scason up to the latest dates, show an increase of about twenty-three per cent. It will be seen that while the aggregate in- crease in exports has been but about thirty per cent, the shipments to Great Britain have been more than Sifty per cent larger this season than last. The Southern papers are filled with accounts of the Aisastrous effect of the recent cold and stormy weather, and the complaints are so universal that we cannot but believe that the damage has been very great. That it has been as extensive as represented, is, how- ever, very doubttul. Even in the event of the young cotton plant having been cut off, the season is not too far advanced for replanting * and as for the s#tatemenis that there is a scarcity of seed, it is only necessary to refer to the large receipts thus far of the crop which matured last fall, to show the utter falsity of such a story, We have no doubt, but that at this moment there are stacks of cotton seed in the vicinity of every gin house in the cotton growing sec- tion of the country, and that there is enough seed to replant the crop a dozen times over. We apprehend very little danger from this source, or from the late- ness of the season in starting a new crop. The only danger is an early frost in the fall ; but even this would de removed-by a favorable summer. We haye known good crops harvested from planting as late as the anid- dle of May, That the crops, grain as well as cotton, have been injured, no one can doubt ; but that the in- jury is fatal, no one can fora moment believe, aftor carefully reading all the accounts and noting the dis- crepancies in the statements. The reports from some sections of the country, state that the young cotton plant bas ali been cut off, when the reports of a week . previous stated, that in consequence of draugit, the plant bad not germinated, and tears were entertained that a re-planting would have to be resorted to to en- sure acrop. Brown April 26th, at 10 o'clock, at hear about destruction of crops by frost or froshets, knowing well the influences brought to bear upon the public mind, and the usual character of first reports ‘A few weeks will, no doubt, change the whole com- plexion of things in the South, and the result will be more favorable than is now generally anticipated. We have seen the crops of sections of country which have deen completely blackened by frost, and to all appear- ances entirely destroyed, recover under the influence of favorable weather, and turn out as finely and as pro- ductive as any other. Late seasons are by no means unfortunate, as our experience has satisfied us that, as a general thing, they are the surest, safest, and most prolific. This view of the state of this all-important staple product no doubt appears extraordinary, in the face of tho most overwhelming accounts to the con- trary from the growing sections of the country; but we feel confident that time will prove the correctness of the position assumed, ‘The annexcd statement exhibits the production and consumption of sugar for the past four years, and esti- mate for the present year, together with the stock on the Slst of March, in each year. These, with other causes, have given the basis for the reduced estimate, and itis highly probable there will be the deficiensy in the supply for consumption calculated. The production for 1849 will de, aceording to the above estimate, less than either of the four previous years, and without any increase in the consumption the deficiency will be about one hun- dred thousand tons.
