INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS, Our Washington Correspondence, Wasuineton, April 17, 1849. The Administration—The Organs—The President’s Levee, §c. §e. Statements have in some manner gained curren- cy that the members of the cabinet are a :tagonis- tic to each other, and these assertions have, of course, been seized upon with avidity by the oppo- nents of the administration, who ring the changes upon them in commendable style. How such statements sprung into existence, it is impossible to say, for assuredly there has been no public mani- festations of any such internal commotions, and we are assured, on competent authority, that no- thing has transpired privately to mar the general good feeling which should exist among the advisers of the President. Every member of the cabinet has declared his aversion to “« proscription,” as understood and ected upon by their predecessors, and we cannot see that a single appointment has yet been made at variance with this position, The Intelligencer of this morning, in an article written in the usual pels style of its presiding ge- nius, but which, at the same time, contains a point or two, replies to the Union’s attack on the Post- master General, and shows, that of one hundred new Postimaster’s appointed—a small number, in- deed, in comparison with the sixteen thousand who compose the material of the machine—none of them were to offices of $1,000 compensation; more than half received less than $200, and a number less than $50 per annum. The insignificance of the ap- pointments is sufficiently apparent; but it tarns out that these minor appointments have always been matters of daily occurrence, although under former administrations they were net deemed of sufficient importance for publication; but—and here the Intelligencer gives its quondam “ organ,” the Na- tional’ Whig, a left hander—it adds, “ our con- temporary, doubless from a laudable determi- nation to before its readers all the infor- mation in, its power of the working of the machine of government, asked and obtained per mission to transcribe entire the daily contents of the appointinent book, and hence the vast array of names which, acting upon former usage, would never have been printe: Che truth is, that neither of the present organs bring much strength to the administration, for the one has no. brains to say anything, and the other, when it does speak, which is marvellously seldom, has such an excess of words and paucity of ideas, that it does not amount to anything, even suppasing that people read it. sut on the other side of the question, it is ru- mored that a new organ 1s to be established for the promautn of democratic principles, to be edited pnators Cameron and Westcott, and called ‘on federacy. 1 have a hand in it. On Thursday the whole fashionable circles of Baltimore were thrown into an_ uproar by a whis- pered announcement that one of their most distin- guished belles, a Miss Stevens, with her cousin, a no less fashionable lady, had eloped from the State of Maryland and entered the state of matrimony. A despatch was transmitted from this city, and on the arrival of the Baltimore train, the young ladies stepped out, accompanied by their husbands, Mr. John E. Owens, the celebrated comedian, and Mr. Gallagher, a member of the theatrical company under his management. The knots had been tied so tight that nothing less than the Alexandrian pee ee can sever them, and the happy couples spent their evening very pleasantly at Hartwell’s, from whence they departed yesterday morning for New York.
