In 1848, compared with 1847, thero was a falling off of £221,262, and in 1849, compared with 1848, a falling off of £4,597,859. The decrease, in cach year, in cotton manufactures, has been larger, much larger than the aggregate decline in value. For the year ending January Sth, 1849, there ‘has beon a falling off of nearly every article named in tho list. Later returns from the Board of Trade show a defi- ciency in the first month of the new year, and if it con- tinues in the same rate throughout the twelve months, the decrease for the year ending January 5, 1850, compar- ed with 1849, will be almost as great as that in 1849 com- pared with 1848, The declared value of exports from Great Britain, for the month ending February 5, 1849, was £3,010.539, against £3,227,138 for the same month in 1843, showing a decrease for the month, this year, of £216,599. While there has been a steady reduction going on in the quantity and value of merchandise exported, the imports into Great Britain have largely increased, as will be seen-by the anuexed comparative table of the quantity of certain articles entered and taken for con- sumption, for the month ending February 5, in each of the past two years :— Commencs: oF Great Brirarx—Quantiry or Imports. Tho Ancrease in the quantity of the most important article of raw material imported, while the quantity of manu- factured goods exported had largely declined, does not exhibit vory prosperous state of things, and is indica- tive of a relapse into the inactivity which it was sup- {posed had permanently disappeared. It is a question in our mind whether we shall ever again be such good customers to the manufacturers of Great Britain as wo have been. Weare making such rapid progress within our limits, in every departmont of ‘manufacturing, that, notwithstanding our increase of population, we shall hereafter be better ablo to supply our own wants, and depend less upon any foreign nation for manufactures of any kind, than we have heretofore, A few days since we gave an article upon tho progress and extent of the cotton manufacturing business at the South, and tho prosperity which has attendod every at- tempt to employ the black population as operatives, The extension of railroads throughout the southorn section of the country, the improvements almost daily wade in machinery, the substitution of steam power for water power, and the profitable returns realized in copital already employed in this branch of industry, hhavegiven such on impetus tothe business that we oxpect to see in » few years, large manufacturing villages and towns thickly scattered throughout the southern and western sections of the country. Thero aro several ox- tensive steam cotton mills in New England, among which the Naumkeag mill, of Salem, Mass., stands con- spicuous, For the four wecks ending the third of March last, there were spun in this mill, 3,297,793 skeins of yarn, on 31,252 spindles; averaging four and thirty- mino-one-hundreths (4 39-100) skeins per spindle, each day, Eleven pairs of mules spun warp, and nino pairs filling. Tho finoness of the yarn averages fully No. and isregularly weighed each day. The cost of spin- ming, for tho above quantity, was 9 35-100 mills per pound, including overscers, doffors, sweopors, tubo re- ppairers, back end front piecers, and, in fact, all the labor of every description. This is the largest mill in the United States, and be- Aoved tobe the largest in the world, in which the en- tire process of converting raw cotton into cloth is ¢ ried on under one roof. It contains 31,232 spindles, 650 hand looma, and other machinery. The machinery dacdriven by a steam-engine of 400 horse power, and 83g tons of anthracite coal are consumed per day to generate steam for the engine, for the mill and machine ‘shop, to warm the mill and offices for drying, making sizing, and all other purposes. The entire establish- ment, including two blocks of buildings for the ac- commodation of operatives, cost in round numbers about $600,000; yet such is tho quality of the goods and the nature of the managemont, that the business ‘thas paid a handsome profit, during the hardest times ave have experienced within the past year, Block Exchange. $20000 0S 6's of 1467110410 shas Erie RR old. & 1000 do Conp 1868 1115, 150 do, new, full 60ds 5000 U 8 5's of 1543 os ) do 57 3000 do ox 5, 50 do 6) 58’ 3000 Treas Notes 108% (100 Canton Co B 3m) Prana | bi Bo Marlom RR BAN enix Ban! do ONY Life & T Ce 1OS!, 20 Uticn & Schen 1K 13 ‘900 Far Trust 3% - 250 Reading RR Bly 300 de 960 357% 6000 > Mtg Bonds 6) 30 oe B00 Misy 3000 Erio 7's Bonds io Oot 357, 50 shas Lisland RR b30 23 ode roms 35! 109° do Scoond Board, 2000 Ynifinna State 5's 644 Washs Harlem RR bd 54 100 Farmers’ Trust 39) op aha Mohawk RR PO) 5 Msp Canton Company 38! 309 Tertem RR se 0 Erie now, fu BK w ABVERTISEMBNTS RENBWED BVERY DAY. INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS, Our Washington Correspondence, Wasurnoton, April 16, 1849, The New Government Organ—Changes in Wash. ington—The Cabinet, &c., §¢. The prospectus for Mr. Bullitt’s newspaper, the Republic, was circulated to-day. It 19 to be the organ of the administration, all the assertions te the contrary notwithstanding. ‘This I have from undoubted authority. Mr, Bullitt is entirely in confidence of the cabinet. v's tae The President, within the past week, has de- clared that he was just as firm in his determination to carry on the government without proscription, ashe ever had been; but that that feeling would not blind him to the necessity of removing officiale where it was to the public advantage. ‘This ry nice, but, at the same time, just distinction, and there is no reason to doubt it will be acted upon, Mr. Ewing left for Lancaster, yesterday, to bring on his family, and will be absent about a fortnight. Meanwhile, Mr. Goddard, the Chief Clerk of the Department, will act as Secretary. Dr. Young, Chief Clerk of the Navy Department, has tendered his resignation to the Secretary of th Navy. He was onthe most friendly terms with Mr Preston; but he thought that the confidential position he occupied should be filled by a political tiend, and not by a democrat. It is understood his resignation has been accepted. Dr. Young isa high toned gentleman, and an excellent publie officer. It, is probable he. will be offered some other position of a less confidential nature. ecretary Meredith occup Mr. M. The Witnesses im the Shuster Case—Destination af Jim Webb—The Feeling of the Community, &c. You have, ere this, been informed, that the jury could not agree in Shuster’s case, and have been discharged. The witnesses have all taken thet departure, with the exception of Messrs. Stewar: and Smith, of New York, and they leave to-mor- row morning. The cars left them this afternoon. Jim Webb, I have been informed, will forthwith wend his xy to Louisville, Kentucky, where hia wife is. Ashe has acquired additional notoriety, of late, a fine speculation might be made by expos- ing him to exhibition, at two shillings ahead. | At no time was Jones or Webb in the jail of this county as a prisoner. ‘They were gentlemen wit- nesses, and dined on the best at a first rate hotel, and not on prison fare. Nominally, they were in custody—really, they were as free as I am. . The sympathy of the great bulk of the commu- nity is with Shuster; not because people believe him to be innocent, but because the government compounded with rogues as bad as he is, and be- cause there seemed to be a determination to crush him alone. Our citizens desire even-handed jus- tice. To commit Shuster would be odd-handed jus- tice. If Webb and Shuster could both be brought to trial as a brace of villains, the jury would con- vict them without leaving their seats. 5 The Board of Commissioners, to adjudicate claims of American citizens againstMexico, assumod by the heey with Mexico, met this morning at the City Hall. Mr, Smith was absent, and will not be here for three or four days. Notice was given, that the secretary and the messenger will not be appointed until the latter end of the weo«. We noticed, among the spectators, Daniel Web- ster, II. 8. Gilpin, A. 8. Cox, Dr. Baldwin, Col. G. L. Thompson, Mr. Corwin, and Col. Woolley. Our Baltimore Correspondence. The weather is becoming more mild, after three days of almost January severigy. Itis feared thag the fruit crop has been greatly damaged, though the wind and an absence of frost prevented it from being so destructive as it would otherwise have been. The ship Juniata, Captain Hands, which cleared from this port for London, yesterday, by Messrs. Garret & Sons, carried out 1100 tons provisions— the value of which, per invoice, is estimated, at at, $133,300. This is said to be one of the heaviest cargoes that ever left this port. A splendid service of plate, costing about $800, has been gotten up by the officers of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, to be presented to Dr. William S. Woodside, late superintendent of the road, which station he resigned a few weeks since. The presentation 18 to be accompanied by a grand sup- perat Thurston’s hotel, seme time next week. The ceremonies to accompany the dedication of the temple of the sons of temperance, to-morrow, are expected to be of the most imposing character. ‘The banners, sige ra and regalia preparing for the procession, are of the most magnificent character, in addition to which, the hall is to be brilliantly il- Juminated in the evening, and a grand temperance banquet held within. is en are expected to be pelts cae both from New York and Pennsylvania. Thetrial of Conrad Vinter for the murder of Mrs. Cooper, commenced yesterday before the county court, the whole day being spent in empan- nelling a jury. Tne murder of this old laces appar- ently witn no other motive than that of obtaining whatever money she magi have in her possession, is one of the most brutal on record. Beth the men charged with the crime, Vinter and Kunkle, will putin the plea of insanity as a defence for the crime, which, nowever, is believed to be without foundation. fs ‘The residence of the Rev.
