The capital is divided into 15,000 shares, a large majority of which are owned in the city of New York Regular dividends are paid on the par value of the stock, and the ‘irs of the road appear to be admirably managed. The earnings of the road since the lest annual report was issued, have been eomparatively large, show- ing abandsome increase. From Dec. 1, 1848, to March 1. 1849, the earnings amounted to $59 764 34, against $46,865 15 for the corresponding period the previous year, being equal to an increase of twenty-five per cent. Should this increase be sustained, as it undoubtedly will be, the net earnings of the company for the pre- sen fiscal year will be at least $100,000, equal to 133¢ per cent on the capital stook. The connection which will soon te made between this'and the East Tennessee read, will give this company a great accession of busi- ness. FINIELS, AGENT, NO. 459 BROADWA' 1 SACRE Sra EY PO RT ee em INTRLLIGENGH BY THE MAILS, Our Washington Ovrrexpondence: Wasutxaton, March 23, 1819. The Latest News from Lieut. Col. Fremont—The Facts, aa Fur as Ascertained. In several of this morning’s papers we fiad the following unwelcome intelligence, which, on ac eount of the explanations we purpose to give, we introduce at length, though doubtless published already in the Herald. [Tnis intelligence relative to the sufferings of Col. Fremont and his party, has been published in the Herald } Persenally acquainted with Col. Fre runt, and anxious to hear of the completion of tis his last tour of exploration to the Pacific, we were pained thus to be informed of the arrest of his enterprise under the disastrous circumstances set forth in the despatch. Desirous, also, to get at the truth of the story, as far as possible, and with the ex- pectation that the facts have been exaggerated, we called on Colonel Benton this morniag, an we regret to say, thatfrom the latest information he possesses, he fears this intelligence is sub- stantially true, though satisfied it is mcorrect 1m ite details. Colonel Fremont left the State of Missouri last fall, with some thuty odd men, for Catitornia, first for the head waters of the Arkansas, intending to cross the Rocky Mountsins at some point among the heed springs of the Vio del Norte, to the most accessible tributary of the Colorado ; thence he proposed a survey of the Colorado to the southern margin of the Great Basin ; thence acrsss the Southern section of said Basin to the Sierra Nevada, and across to the Pacific, so as to complete his surveys of that vast country of deserts and mountains lying between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific ocean, and within the parallels of 34 and 42 deg. N. L. | Another object, and a primary one, was to ascertain whether there 1s not from the head springs of Del Norte a pass over the mountains to the waters of the Colorado, and a practicable route in that direction for a great national pighway to the Pacific. On arriving in Calitornia, on the Paeific, it was the intention of Colonel Fremont and his party to establish themselves 1m a permanent settlement somewhere on the Sacramento. Mrs. Fremont, with her brother-in-law, Mr, Jacobs, left New York in the last steamer for Chagres, en route for San Francisco, with the expectation ot meeting Colonel Fremont at that point, in April, She destined to be disappointed; tor under the heat view of the case, Fremont cannot resumehisjourney from Taos, in New Mexico, before April, unless he abandous his original object of an exploration, and tukes the army route of the Gila, already sur- veyed, ith respect to the news in the foregoing des- patch, itis believed to be substantially true. On the 16th December, when the thermometer was sixteen degrees below zero, neat Santa Fe, Fre- mont was some four hundred miles higher up the Tiver, pushing into the mountains at an altitude of 8,000 or 9,004 feet above the sea, and covered from ten to filteen feet with snow. It is not supposed that the party have perished, because they were well supplied with provisions. It 18 altogether probable that their horses and mules are lost, trom the cold and trom want of grass. But it 1s not probable, in any view of the case, that the men were reduced to cannibalism, because, even af they had exhausted their stock of provisions which was to carry them through to the Pacific, thar animals would afford them abundant means of sus- taining life. Colonel Benton 1s of the opinion that the ani- mals were lost, that the men survive, aad that the expedition will be resumed with the melting of the snows in the mountains, for this plain reason, that Fremont is not the man to abandon an enterprise while he has life to carry it on. It was certainly a rash undertaking to croas the nce No. 116 Grand erect yue stairs, will open Paris st dered ib set ARIS MILLINERY.—MRS. But, after having explored and crossed the sti!l Joftier Sierra Nevada, in the winter of ’44, Fre- mont, perhaps considered that the Recky Moua- tains might be surmounted, 1n spite of the ten or fitteen feet of snow upon them in 1848. Instead, therefore, of profitting from his sufferings in the first instance, he has lived to suffer sull more se- verely in the second. There is still, however, a chance that the case 18 not 80 bad as reported, though all the testimony on hand goes to strengthen the intelligence trom St. Lows. In any event, it is hoped that Fremont and his men are spared, and that tor the rake of their families, and tor che sake of science, shey may be abe to resume their explorations in the spring. . Ww. There is still much uncertainty with regard to the course which the President and cabinet wily pureue with regard to removals and appoiatments. That removals in considerable numbers will even- tually take place, 18 not doubted by those who un- derstand political movements; the only question is, how long they can be resisted, for it is quite certain that the pressure from without will compel the cabinet to act, to satisfy the demands of the whig party, as wellas of the independent demo- crats, who supported General Cfaylor tor the Pre- sidency. The latter are quite as anxious for a system of removals to be adopted as are the whigs, and the cabinet are daily realizing the fact that the present office-holders, appointed by: Polk and his predecessors, have but tew friends among the Taylor men who will go 80 far as to desire to see them continued in office. The twenty years during which the democratic parts have held the offices throughout the country, Rete the 1ew exceptions under Harris.n and Tyier, is considered by the Taylor mea as long enouga, and the President and cabinet concur wath their sup- porters in this opinion. Still, they are reluctant to vet in the mater of removals, seeming disposed to feel their way with caution.
