NA TSE SPENT HM LUNE ATH AUEnne the El Dorado of the Pacific, was got up under the auspices of Mr. Ewing, through hie corres- pondence from Washington, alter his arrival there in December. And it 18 said that he imparted facts m respect to the quanti ot gold to be tound, and . the ease of obtamung it, made known to him ean-, fidentiaily by persons Washington, who had obtained them trom their treads in the | employ of the government; and that, while Mr. Ewing urged the formation and the apeedy de- parture of a bemuted company, he enjoined secresy in regard to the facts alluded to. Hence the com- | pany was made up ina kind of private manner. la tact, fit is pretty much of a family cencern.— For, bee les a son of Mr. Ewing, six others of the twenty are relations. And 1 fiud it common talk here, that this company will have speci! advan- tages, through Mr. Ewing. as a member of the in- coming cabinet, which, he 13 reported to have as- sured his friends here, he was certain of obtauiag at the hands of President Taylor. . ‘Later advices from him, however, I am told, render tms “expectancy” somewhat doubitul. _{t is now said that Mr. Schenck 18 a competitor with Ewing, for Ohio’s place (if any) 10 the Cabiaet, and that, though General Taylor had a high es- teem for Mr. Ewing, yet, froma settled plan of or- nization of the new administration, in which r. Clay 12 understood to coincide, it he is not the originator, i ill be incompatible to give Mc. it wi Ewing a cabinet appointment ; and that so soon as this is fu ly ascertained, Mr. Ewing will throw his influence im tavor of Mr. Vinton. r The “plan of organization” alluded to, is said to, be to the eflect that the ‘‘master-spirits” of the abortive administration of 741, shall all “stand off” and take no part (apparently,) m re-oilng the wheels of government, but leave this to be done by an entirely new set of public servants whose services caa only be jueged by the fruits of the tature; aud atter these get the government car in good trim, and the *bal- gme” weil steamed, with a faitutnl (party) seatiael at every post requiring attention tour safe traveilog, the old laborers are to be tukea on board aad earried along tothe end of the journey. Thats new men ure to be placed at the heads of the partments at home, to take care ot and to mana «men, measures, aud principles,” and the of polt- tical unkers, now pait aod parcel of tae Incoming tration party, are to be made ministers, epvove, consuls, and charges abroad, and gover- nors, judges, &c., athome. | Such being the understanding here among the friends of Mr. Ewing, who have his personal wel- fare and political advancement too much at heart to remain indiflerent im the present state of afhurs at Washington, where he now is, not to make it and ail they know in regard to 1t a common social and public talk, they are all tree in saying thas af he fai's ot being taken into the cabinet he will next seek the highest appointment over affurs in Cah fornia. Westean Scrive. Unica, Feb. 19, 1849. The Late Fire, and Escape of Tio Persons from the Thad Story—Departure of the Utica Min- ang Company for California. (Omitted for reveral days for want of room.) Amidst the high winds and freezing cold wea- ther, a destructive fire broke out about one o'clock on Sunday morning. It was first discovered in the store No. 10 Liberty street, occupied by D. D. T. Bourne, asa grocery. It being very cold, and the wind blowing heavy, it was some time before the engines could get water to work with, there being no place to obtain any water except from the Ene canal, where they finally succeeded in breaking the ice, and the firemen then did their duty nobly ; but before they could make any pro- gress in ut the element, two of the build- ange were enurely consumed, and the adjoining one nearly 80. The extensive jewelry establish- ment of Baily & Bro.’s, on the corner of Liberty and Hotel streets, sustained great damage by the removal of goods, but fortunately the building was saved. A number of other merchants met with nearly the same oss as Baily & Brothers. The fol- Jowing 1s an accurate list of losses and insu- ce :— rithe two buildings No. 10 and No. 6 Liberty street, were owned by the heirsof J. Delvin, and ameured for $2,500 ; the other one (No. 8) wasown- ed by Mr. Overacker, of Little Falls, and insur- ed for $1,600. Tnese insurances will probably eover the whole loss of the buildings. D. D. T. Bourne’s stock entirely destroyed— amounting to $1,800—insurance $1,200; D. “Mor- an, joss $800--insured for $300; H. Collamer, t and shoe store, loss about $300 ured for 1,200; Baily &Brothers, logs by removal of goods, ioc sured for $3,000; White & Mortley, hat and cap store, loss by removal of goods, ¢200—in- surance unknown; Roberts & Thomas, tailors, | Joss by removal of goods, $300— insured for $1,000. The whole losses are about all covered by insur- | ance, and te merchants will sustain no material damage, except by the loss to their business, as it will be some time before any of them can get set- tled again. if A most fortunate escape of two lives was made by Mr. Bourne and a young man. who both slept in the third story of the two buildings destroyed. Mr. Bourne awoke when the under part of his store ‘was in flames, and after were the young man, they both saved their lives by slidiag downa chain suspended from the top of the store No. 10 Liberty street, which waa used for hoisting boxer, etc. This city has been visited by fires this winter many more times than it has for some years, and the citizens et Utica will now probably awake to their interest, and assist in progressing with the Utica waterworks, which have been in ‘agitation for some time past. The millinery store of Mrs. Leland, Genesee street, was discovered to be on fire about 12 | e’clock last night; but the engines and firemen were on the spot in a short time, and soon put it out, and but little damage was done to the build- ang or goods of Mrs. Lelund. ee The balance of the Utica Mining Company teok their departure a few evenings since for Cu- hitornia; they numbered about eighteen, mostly all young men, and a great time was witnessed at the railroad depot, the friends and relatives of the members of the company shaking hands and taking an almost farewell leave of their sons, bro- thers and cousins, who have departed for the gold country. They are to sail from New York to-mor- row, the 20th. | A number of men from the interior of this | bitants. Movements for California. MOVEMENTS IN NEW YORK The schooner James L. Day, Cant Jas. 8.
