COMMERCIAL AFPAIBS. ~— MONEY MARKET. Thursday, March 1.6 P. M. Quotations for etock to dey were very unsettled, and the market was not so buoyant as previously noticed. At the first board Ohio 6s advanced \ per cent; Far- mers’ Loan, }s; Morris Canal, 4. Ecle Bonds fell off 34; Canton Company, % je Railroad, %; Harlem, 3¢fReading Railroad, 34; New Haven, 4. All others closed at prices current yesterday. At the second board the sales were to a moderate ex- tent, and the closing prices about the same as those ruling in the morning. There appears to bea lull in the market; but the bears do not succeed in making ‘much impression in prices, Ths money market is a Uttle mere stringent, whieh is caused principally by the fact that several days’ payments have been crowd- im consequence of the shortness of the month just closed. It is anticipated that Saturday, he 8d inst., will be = pretty tight day among the mer- chants, and that considerable shinning will have to be practiced to make all right by 8 o'clock, but upon the opening of the week all willbe essy again. The sub Areasury is slowly accumulating coin, but the govern- ment cannot hold on to it long. The importatio: during the past few days have been large, and the de- amand for specie to pay duties, may, for a day or two, be larger than usuel; but all this will soon be over, and 4¢ is the prevziling impression, that after this week, the money market will be easier than it bas been for years, Quotations for foreign exchange ate steadily settling ‘dowm, The demand at present is not vory active for ‘Sterling bills, and we quote the best in the market at ‘9 a 7% per cent premium. Billson Paris we quote at SF. 36 w bf. 8244; Hamburg, 34% » 35; Amsterdam, 3014 a 80%; Bremen, 7754 It would be well for holders of Illinois Internal Im- provement bonds and scrip, remaining unfunded, to have them funded by the agent of the State in this city, ‘before the 10th March inst., as the time limited by law expires on that date, after which the interest on all outstanding bonds o The fundable ‘bends will be funded whenever they aro pre- sented after that time; but they will only draw i terest from the date of the funding. It {s, thorefore, Important to holders that they should present them at the earliest moment. It is equally important to the State that all evidences of its indebtedness should be presented, that the total amount of liabilities may be known. The ‘egate value of personal property embr in the assesements for 1848, is $32,072,805; the number of aores of land assessed in 1848, was 16- 623.091; the value of land in 1848 was $5% 200,434; the value of improvements, such as farm buildings, fences, tilled lands, &c., &c., $24 088 074; the value of town lots and buildings in 1848 was $14,892,136. The inoreare in the value of taxable property during the past four years has been nearly equal to the az- gregate indebtedness of the State; and the revenue of the treasury, from the present valuation of taxable property, is sufficient to meet all the demands upon it for government ex es and interest on the public debt as it now stands. In the event of taxable pro- perty im Indiana increasing annually at the rate ox- hibited in the above comparative statement, the rate of taxation for State purposes willsoon be redused, and the people relieved of portion of their burde: ndians seouritierfhave improved very much in market value within the past six months, and there is no rea- on why thore provided for by the State should not command prices equal to those of any other State of similar character. A few days ago, Congress passed sn act appropri- ating six thousand dollars to pay the expenses of @ delegation of Chippewa Indians to this city and back to their homes. To-day they appeared in the freets in new costume, and with gold epam lettes, and an extra supply of beads and bloods red trimmings. They attracted much atten= | ton, and the boys hailed them with whoops | and yells, No set of men ever appeared more vain and happy; in their own opinion, no doubt, they were the greatest people on earth! Before eleven o’clock, aud previous to the meeting of the House of Repregentatives, they came into the hal. There were present many members, who tovited their red brethern to give them a specimen of their eloquence. So the principal orator ascended te Speuker’s seat, and, with a guard on each side of him, aud an interpreter near by, he spoke to the following effect to a standing-up audience, viz:—- came here we were as heaps | i ee as clearly asthe water of Lake Su- perior, The hearts of the Chippewas are leaping and Tejoici!
