MONEY MARKET, Friday, Feb, 236 P.M, [he telegraphic despatches from Halifax, giving the | advices received at that port by the steamship Europa, ‘from Liverpool, have had a very favorable effect upon our stock market, and raised the spirits of the bulls to a high point, and given the bears the blues. Govern- vent seourities advanced to-day one andoneand half | per cent, and helders were not anxious to sell, even at | that improvement, preferring to wait the arrival of pri- ‘vate accounts before putting their supplies upon the market. Fancy stocks advanced to-day a fraction, | and the sales were large. On the whole, the market ‘was more buoyant than we have noticed fora long ‘time, and the impression is rapidly gaining ground that swe are about entering upon a period of speculation muprecedented within the past three years, The effect ‘of ene or tworiecal causes may for a time bo sufficient ‘to keep prices fiightly depressed, or preventa very rapid ‘rise; but as they will soon be permanently removed) ‘wesee nothing calculated to arrest an inflation in priees, beyond the most sangui: nticipations of the bulls, With such an abundance of money in Eng. Tand, that the rate of interest has become reduced ts ‘Jess than three per cent-and eapital seeking invest- ment even st the ruling rates- it wiil be impossible to “seep up the rate of interest inthis country to six and @even,per cont. The confidence in American seou- tan, ‘Which already exists abroad, is sufficient to ereate « temend for them, which will sbeord in a abort time nearly the Whoiv of our public debt; ana | the quotations eurrent in London on the 9th instant, ‘were moderate compared with what they must soon b® An that market. A six percent United States stock, along side of English consols, has a wide margin for | an improvement, and we see no reason why that mar- | gin should not be covered, The time is not far dis- stant when the current rates of interest in this eountry will range two and three per cent below vghese now ruling; two countries so closely o meoted im their financial and commercial affairs as Great Britain and the United States, must have @ more equal distribution of capital, and a more | equal rate of interest than has hitherto been the case. | Foreign capital will seek and find employment where | it will with safety command the best interest; and | our public securities are now becoming so well and favorably known abroad, that they must attract an Jmmense amount of capital to this country. We have | mo doubt that inthe course of another year ji/ty mil- vested im our State stooke. The finarcial revulsion which occurred soon after, compelled many of the States im the Union to suspend the psy ment of inte rest, This, with the repudiation of « portion of the debts of others, destroyed the credit of American secu. rities of all kinds, in Europe. From tnat time uatil within @ year er two, our State stocks have been Jeoked upon with suspicion by foreign capitalists, and large amounts of those purchased at and above par, have, within the past two years, been returned te this country. old at the market price. At that time we remarked that the sellers never could get hold of the same rtocks again without paying very high prices for them, and the result bas verified our predictio: ‘The bigh rate of interest paid upon Government and State stocks, must make them very desirable invest- ments with capitalists who bave heretofore been satis- fied with those that only paid three and four per cent per annum; and so long as our States aie able to prererve the credit they have re-established by the most extensive eystem of taxation and rigid economy in public expenditures, we shall find markets abroad for any eurpius we may wish to get rid of, The advance in prices for Amerioan securities is not» by any means, the most important feature in the fereig: The activity reported in the manufao- vuring districts of Great Britsin, the large sales of cotton and the improving prices, the bealtby state of the corn markets, aod the universal feeling of oonti- dence in the future, are events calculated to givea buoyancy to commercial affairs in this country, such aswe have not realized for years. Everything oon- nected with commerce appears to be in a very sound and Lealthy condition, particularly #0 far as the most important interests of this country are concerned. With our stocks and our most important agricultural staple in active demand in Europe, at improving prices; with the prospect of receiving within the next twelve months millions of dollars in gold from our Pacifio possessions; and the prospect of am importation of specie from Europe to some extent, there must soon be better \imes here than have been known since 1835 and 1836, Prices for every species of property must advance, and speculation give activity to every branch of industry. The administration of our public affairs will, under the new government, be upon amore liberay basis, and such as will be likely to give all classes more confidence in the systems which regulate our finan- cial and mercantile matters. At the first board to day, Treasury Notes went up one per cent; United States 6's, 1867, 34; Ohio 6's, Reading Bonds, 134; Erle 1's, 4; Farmers’ Loan, X; Erie Railroad, 34; Canton Co. %; New Havem Rail- read, 4; Harlem Railroad, 14; Long Island Railroad, 34; Norwich and Worcester Railroad, 3, Reading Railroad, % At the second board, the sales were not large, bat there was # tl'ght reaction in prices, the market elosing less buoyant than it open Some ef the leading fancies have advanced several per cent within the past week, and the bulls feel con- fident they will realize a further improvement to some extent. Some of the reguiar dividend. paying stocks, which have for some time past been very much depre- ciated, have been im more active demand for in- vestment. Among others, we notice Mohawk Rail. road ttock, An advance of three per cent has taken place in this stock since the last sale. This rise has been produced, no doubt, by the report that the next dividend will be larger than the last paid. The increase in the earnings has thus far been sufficient to enable the company to make the next semi-annual dividend four per cent; and if the business continues throughout the year at the rate it has commenced—and there isevery reason to believe it will—this will be # regular eight per cent stook, when it will be eagerly sought after for permanent invest- ment. The cepital of the company is small; it is a short road; ithas asmall debt; and there are not 2° many leakages as in most of our large railroad com- nies, The leaks in many of the long railroads, with arge capitals, will founder some of them before many Years elapse, and capitalists will look more to the short lines, with capitals too small to be meddled with by managers with impunity. There are so many items of expenditure in our large railroad companies carried to “ Construction Account,’ that the stockholders know nothing about the actual cort of the road, or anything else connected with it. Our advice to men of moderate means is to invest their money in small companies, Stock Exchange.
