The signa- tures are very good, but the counterfeit plate is unlike the genuine. The vignette at the top and centre of the true bill is a female seated in # sheil car, drawn by een horses—in the spurious, a female with a vase pre. sented to a large spread eagle. At the bottom and centre of the genuine bill, is a plough and rake, on which rests a theaf of wheat—in the counterfeit is small eagle. Counterfeit Hundreds on the North- western Bank ef Virginia, are in circulation at Wheel- ing. There is nothing about them resembling the genuine but the filling up. Some of tke Southern yailroed lines have been extended during the year 1848; but we have no returns showing to whatextent. The average cost per mile of the railroada constructed in 1848, was about thirty thousand dollars, which would make an aggregate expenditure for the year of thirty mill yf dollars, on these works. The number of miles of railroad in the United States in operation at the olore of the year 1848, was 5,449, which cost about hundred.and fifty millions of dollars. Theannexed statement exhibita the length aud cost of roads con- structed each year, compiled from the bert authori- ties:— It appears by this, that more thes one hundred and fifty two millions of dollars were invested in these works, at the clore of 1848. The number of milen oonstrurted and put into active operation in 1845, greatly oxneeds any previous year, being nearly doable that of 1333, With such snimmense extent of territory, we mast have, in a few years, double the leagth of read we now have, and the amount of money invested will s00n ex- ceed that employed im any other branch of industry, Im a few years, it will be larger than the aggregate of our public debt, the banking capital of the country, progress of these works are, therefors, becoming @ mat- ter of immense importance to the millions who have investments inthem. We are far in advance of Great Britain,in the eonstruotion of these works, considering our means and resources, 60 far asthe length of read is concerned, and @ few years will suffice to place us in the same position in the expenditure of capital ‘The annual report of the Erie (Peun.) It ap- pears that the entire quantity of lands under the contrel of the Board of Trustees amounted to rearly 225,000 acres, and the number of lots in Chicago, and other towns along the line, amounted to 6,000. The whole lots and lands were valued at $2,126 000, of which $1,100.000 was for canal lands; the twa lots making up the balance. Of the lands, about 46.000 acres, apprai- sed at $308,000, weresold. The amount realised by sale exceeded the estimate by about $4000. In this is in- cluded about $79,000, the valuation of about 17,000 acres, which were entitled to preemption. Of the town lots over 2,000 were sold, producing about $570,, 000; being an advance upon their valuation of nearly $50,000. From this sum $11,000 ia to be deducted, being the aggregate of the fa'lures in making first pay- ments. Thus the total -mount of sales exceeds $769,- 000; while the lands yet unsold—179,000 acres and 4,000 lots—are appraised at $1,398,308. In Chicago there were 1,478 town lots, appraised at $630,000. Of there, 800 were sold for over $400,000; which was at a value exceeding their appraisement by nearly $40,000. Of this sum $90,000 was received trom lots entitled to pre-emption. The value of the re_ maining lots, according to the appraisement, is $260,000. The sales at the Suwmit amounted to $650. At Lockport the sales were $32,000, at an advance on the appraisement of $4,000. Tre unsold lands are valued at $46,000. Im Joliet $10,000 were received. The lots unsold are valued at $11,000. At Du Page, lots to the value of $1,500 were sold; $4,000 are yet un- sold. At Kankakee the lots are appraised at $10,500, No sales. At Morris, the sales were $7000, dt an ad. vance of $2,000. Unsold lands valued at $2000, At O:tawa the sales amounted to $54,000, being an ad_ vance on the appraisement of $4000. The unsold lots and lands are valued at $139,000. Of the amount sold, one fourth was received, being in the aggregate $237,000. The rents of lotsand lands, including rale of effects belonging to the cant amount to $13,000; while the expenses for appral ment, surveying, improving, and selling the lands lots, amount to $22,000.
