The Cabinet, and Cabinet Prospects. A stake or two is lanted; a point or twois ptorily declines ‘The examples of history who elected John Quincy Adams in °24; Mr Clay it was who accepted the department of State under that administration; and the public mind was visited with the ineradicable suspicion, however unjust, that this arrangement was the result of a bargain and sale—ot the man for the office, and the office for the patronage of the man. In 1848, almost simultaneously with the coming fotward ot Mr. Crittenden to the support of Gen. Taylor, it was understood that, in the event of the election ot the hero of Mcnterey, Mr. Crittenden was to take the place o i & natural conclusion, from the self-evident fitness ot the man for the office ; but we apprehend that Mr. Crittenden declines the office, or any office in the cabinet, trom the waraing consequences of the example ot his “illustrious predecessor ” It re= cuired no extraordinary sagacity in Mr. Crittenden to foresee that Gen. ‘Taylor could be elected, and that any other whig candidate would, probably, be defeated; and upon thie conel: natural that he sh aasell’ ta sepals Mr. Clay by the nomination of Gen. sirous of the success of the whig candidate, only prospect of the success ot Whig measurea, it wi ot Secretary of State. This was hould exert himseit’ to supersede Taylor. De= the natusal that he should veize upon that man of whose seccess he felt an unqualified assurance. And upon this ground alone, it is quite sufficient for the detence of Mr. Crittenden to place his suo- vert of Gen. Taylor and his abandonment of Mr. Clay. Thus far, then, Mr. Crittenden stands acquitted. But the bar of public opiaion admits of testimony not admissible upon the records. It admits of the testimony Of suspicion; ad liad Mr. Crittenden accepted a place in General Taylor’s cabinet, the suspicion would inevitably follow, that his support of General Taylor looked to bis own advancement, and that his abandeoment of Henry Clay was not upon the altar of whig principles, but tor the selfish object of his own personal elevation, even at the hazard ot prostrating his best friend, and walking over his tallen body. This suspicion, we say, would have attached itself to Mr. Critteuden, had he accepted a place in General Taylor's cabinet ; and 't 1s fair to presume that he had the sagacity to perceive it, and the discretion to decline. General Taylor could do no less than invite hint to his ministerial circle, whatever may have been the motives of Mr. Crittenden in the important ser- vices which he had rendered to secure the nomi nation of the moet popular man of tne day, as the only man for the whigs. In declining, Mr. Crit- tenden has redeemed himeeif and his motives, aud has done much to give the promise of harmony to the administration and its supporters in Congress ; for, with Mr. Crittenden in the cabinet, aud Mr. Clay in the Senate, it would have been extremel; difficult to reconcile the counsels of the one wi the course cf the other. Mr. Crittenden would | have felt himself under no obligations to Mr. Clay, and Mr Clay would have scorned to play the part of a secondary agent to the advice of Mr. Crittenden. Between these two men would have been establish- ed the greatest stumbling block to the harmony of the co-operate action ot the cabinet and of Con- giess. Though modified by circumstances aad by age, the passions of men are the same, and the privciple ot revenge is the same in the mind of the statesman 4s in the heart of the fisherman. Reta- liation, in both cases, 1s the law, when the opportu- | mity is given; and 1t is often a question whether he that suffers the wrong or he that inflictgit feels most the sense and the justification of enforcing @ | redress. We presume that if not definitely determine yeas these actuated Mr. Crit~ 4 berth in the cabinet of the he to take the place of the prominent man amoag them; for, whatever situation he might have taken, he would have been regarded the prominent man. We sespect, theretore, the declination of Mr. Crittenden, as a decision discreet for humselt, judi- ctous tor the administration, and just to the public. Meantime, it 13 understood that Mr. Clayton has been advised by telegraph that he 13 wanted in the State department; and we have no doubt of his ace ceptance, for his previous relations with Mr. Clay, as compared with his course in the campaiga of 748, were such aste leave himentirely exempt from any embarrassments of personal dissatistacuon. He stands in the easy attitude 6f good relations with all men and ell factions of the whig party, and fiee trom any perplexities of constructive un- gratitude. ‘The other jlaces in the cabinet are yet undeter- nined. For. the Post Office Department, ex-Governor Letcher,’of Kentucky, Hon. Cabet B. Smith, of [a- diana, Hon. Truman Smith, of Connecticut, and cthers are named. For the ‘Treasury, Hon. William C. Rives, of Virginia, Hon. George Evans, ot Maine, Hon. Abbott Lawrence, ot Massachusetts, Hon. Andrew Stewart, of Pennsylvania, and Hon. ‘Thomas Ewing, 0! Ohno, are menuoned, severally, as likel to succeed, Itis suggested, however, that a tariff- man frem the South will be the most expe- dient man for the post. Mr Mangum, of Nerth Carolina, desires nothing, and will accept nothing. For the War department, Hon. Mr. Gentry, of seem now For the Navy, Hon. T. Butler King, of Georgi has claims entitled to attention. Fer Averney General, Hon. Reverdy Johnson, of Maryland, Hon. Mr. Badger, ot North Carolina, Govemor Johnston, of Peansylvania, aad others, are included as among those from whoin the se- lection is to be made. Certainly, General Taylor has abundance of materia!, und trom the deliberate manner ia which he goes to work, we doubt not he will make a judicious selection of his advisers. The Treasury department is the great post of patronage aod responsibility, demanding a capable head and a disintcrested jolitician, as a dispenser of the offices more than apy other department, Next to itis the Post Office department. Let these two depart- ments be well fl pied by secondary statesmen, without much hazard led, and the others muy be occu- of blundering im the dark, the State department being already provided tor, with a capable and sul stanticl man. Ww. Wasuineron, Feb. 18, 149. The Cabinet--Odds and Ends—Inswe of Stock—— ‘The Reciprocity Bill, &c. We have at last something definite as to at lease one of the drumatis persone of General Taylor’ cabinet. Mr. Clayton received, yesterday, a tele- graphie despatch, offering him the State Depart- ment, which, it is understood, he has accepted. It may be remembered, that more than two months | ago, we stated we had gocd aathority for knowing that Mr. Clayton would get the State Department. | The appointment is a good one, Mr, Clayton being a | views. tatesman of the first order, and moderate in his The Intelligencer furnishes the public with some Hegative information about the new cabinet. It states positively that Mr. Crittenden will not fill a | place in it. The Jntelligencer, of course, has good. | grounds for its statement, which, it may be re- | marked, corresponds with the letter of the New Orleans correspondent of the New York Herald, two or three weeks since It 18 & inatter ot re- gret to every friend of the next administration | that Mr. Crittenden does not see fit to accept a po» si.ion in it; for we take it torgranted the offer has been made him. He would be an able al General Taylor: cool, clear- headed, and moderate. ly for We stated, a week ago, that Mr. Bailie Peyton, would fill the Attorney Generalship. Events eince | then strengthen this idea, although it is generally censidered that the District Attorneyship of New Orleans is what Mr. Peyton desires, being a more lucrative post for him than the Attorney General- ship might prove. General ‘Taylor is to be here on Wedfesday next, and has taken rooms at Wilhard’s Hotel, as we mentioned early in January. By the way, he could not have procured better quarters than the comfortable hotel of the Messrs. Willard. His suit of rooms ve in number) are elegantly fur- nished, (a8, in house,) and open into one another. eed, are all the appointments in the Mr. Polk has accepted the use of Major Heisa’s rooms, at the [rving House, and will move into them on the first—leaving Washington, for his home in Tennessee, by the Southern route, en the morning of the sixth.
