Bur glary,—The grocery store of J. & 4, Lowery, No 121 Front street, was entered by some burglars on ‘Wednesday night last ; the desks were broken open ‘and asmall amount of money carried off. inten: tion of the jobbers was evidently to get access to the ironsafe. Thus they failed to do, although they evi+ dently had tried hard to accomplish their object. There ia a great contest going on between the bears and the bulls, and the gold excitement furnishes food for both parties to operateon The butis hadalittle the advantage today. Some of them got hold of a bar of gold somewhere, and exhibited iton change as the real California brand. Considerable curiosity was exhibited to get sight of it, and the bears could not stem the up- ward current of prices ‘it created. At the first board New Haven Railrozd advauced 34 per cet; Erle bonds, 1; Reading Mortgage bonds,1; Kentucky 6's, 34, Erie Railroad fell off 4 per cent ; Reading Railroad, 34. All others closed at prices current yesterday. At the second board Indiana 5's improved \{ per cent; Harlem, 7; ; Canton Co. +g ; Farmers’ Loan, }{, with les to a moderate extent. The Crescent City, from Chagres, is anxiously looked for. We shall frst hear from her at New Orleans, by telegraph; and it is full time we had some accounts from her, It-was reported om ’change to-day, that several of cur insurance companies had taken large risks on gold shipped from San Francisco. We do not know what eccounts have been received of shipments made, or to be made; but ail agree in the opinion that several millions ef dollars worth must be on the way at this mement to this and other Atlantic ports. The communication between Panama and Sau Francisco must soon be as frequent as between this port and Chagres, cr any southern port, when we sball, without doubt. have remittences of gold in such quantities that bars of the real stuff will be as plenty in Wall street as the spurious metal has been during the past week. The report of the Canal Commissioners of Pennsyl- vania gives s very detailed but not very favorable sccount of the operations oa, and the revenue from, the public works of the State during the past year. The deficiency in the revenue, compared with the timate made at the close of the previous fiscal year, was caured entirely by ciroumstances beyond the con- trol of the commissioners. The freshets of the winter of 1847 and 1848 caused very extensive damage to the canals, and the extraordinary expenditures have, con- sequently, been heavy—much heavier than antici- pated. In making the annual estimates of revenue from the public works, an item for the probable dam- age from freshets is allowed; but that allowance for the past year was small, compared with the amount re- quired, It will be seen, by the annexed statement, that the net revenue for the year 1248 was small: Pustre Worxs or Pennsytvanta—Receirrs anp Ex- PENDITURES, 1548, Gross receipts from railroads and als. . $1 553,344 00 + 1,067,394 33 ‘Total expenditures . . Net receipts over expenses, 1848. + $435,940 62 Of the expenditures, $378 571 49 will come undor the head of extraordinary, being for repairs of damage by freshets. But for this outlay the net revenue would bave been $864.521 11. This would have been of vast importance to the public treasury in the pre- | eent condition of the State finances. But for these unfortunate events the net revenue would have been more than $864,521 11, as the interruption to naviga- tion on the main line, in consequence of the destruc- tion of the aqueduct, tended to @ reduction of the grees receipts. The ccst of ordinary and extraordi- mary repairs and breaches exceed t” c estimates of last year $228,560 18. ‘The buriness on the canals ond railroads, under the circumstances, bes been all that the most sanguine could expect. The tolls oucoal and iron have been unurvally large, while those on flour and grain have | ‘motfallon offas much as might have been expeoted. | when it is taken into considera'ioa the great differ- ences in prices, and the limited demand from all sources, compared with 1847. On coal the tolls have Increased $13,665; on iron, $24,695; and on flour and grain, the decrease has been $54,719 65. ‘The estim: cost of keeping all the lines im order, for 1849, shows that there will be required for ordinary | and extracrdinary repairs, andthe payment of debts, three nundred and thirty-eight thousand nine hundred dollars; for motive power expenses, the purchase o¢ new engines, and the payment of debts, three hun- dred and sixty four thousend eight hundred and eighty ceven dollars; for collectors, weighmasters, Ko, thirty-two thousand dollars; for look tenders, thirty. five thourend five hundred dellars; for pay of Canal Commirsioners and expenses of their offize, fire thou- d two hundred dollars; for repairing breaches which may occur during the year, or for the purchase of materiels after the firrt of December next, fifty thourand dollars; for balance due on weigh Jock at Beach Haven, three thousand six hundred and thirty | dollars and ten cents, whieh, after deducting the ba- | lance im the treasury (twenty two thousand dollars) | yeaver eight hundred and eight thousand one hundred and seventeen dollars and ten cents as the amount Tequired for all purposes of the year. It is estimated that if no rerious breaches oceur, the recelpta from tolls will amount to one million seven hundred thou- eand dollare, which will leave eight hundred and ninety-one thourand eight hundred and eighty-two dollars and eighty-nine cents asthe net profits of the year. Ifthis is realized, the revenue will be nearly double that of this year. Of the estimated tonnage of 1848, about 26.700 tons is that of keels, barges and flat boats. ‘The estimated tonnage entered for the lilinois River, was 36,000 tons greater in 1843 than in 1847. The es mates made of tonnage are based upon the fact that boats carry much more than their measured tonnage, and also that they carry much more down than up stream. New Oavegans, Jan. 17, 1349. Thave some further information to give you re- | lative to the movements of General Taylor, the President elect, which I received yesterday trom | a gentleman who has just been up the river at Baton Rouge. I understand that the General will not take his departure for the North tll the 23d p- | Or 25th inst., probably the latter. The old hero has been seriously ill of late, although nothing will in- duce him to confine himself to his bed or to take medicine. He 19 now getting better, and will proba- bly be in first rate order by the time he starts tor the seat of government. Colonel Bliss, his son-in-law, goes to the North by the Atlantic route at the same time the General goesby land. Colonel Bliss will go right through, | and will probably arrive in New York about the 10th of February. In New York the Colonel and his lady will probably remain for a few days, and | Will probably visit his relatives in New England before they go to Washington, There 18 no solid foundation for the rumors that Col. Bliss will be appointed Secretary of War. Such a thing, if ever contemplated, has been abandoned. ft 18 more likely that he may be appointed Adjutant General, or Inspector General, if such an appointment can be made without giving offence to any of the other officers in the army. Capt. Allison, whose name is so well known in connection with the famous “ Allison letter,” haa been at Baton Rouge for some days past; but there 18 nothing of any interest in his move ments, go fur as I can lear. Lam told that Baton Rouge ia an extremly dull place. The only thing of moment that tool place there for some time past was the appearance of cho- lera, which, however, has ceased, and disappeared entirely at the last accounts. One of the officers of the garrison told my triend that but tor the occa- sional perusal of the New York Herald, which they constantly getat the garrison, they would have had to cut their throats or die of ennur, or as a dernier resort, to cateh the cholera, so as to have an excitement of some sort. The General him- self is at Baton Rouge, and walks about like a quiet, respectable tarmer. In fact, he 18 anything buta “lion.” His extremely unassuming man- ners and singular simplicity of habits, form the principal traits in his character. His name is never mentioned in that town in comnection with politics, nor even at the garrison, unless in refer- ence to military affairs. In fact, he could not be more unnoticed if he were the defeated, instead of | the victorious, candidate at the late election. There was some intmation a short time ago that he would accept an invitation to a ball at New Or- Jeans before his departure ; but that intention has | been abandoned, and he will not come here to New Orleansat all, Mr. Clay hasarrived here, and a great many BY LOST OR STOLEN, FROM BEDLOW’S 13LAND—A Row Boat, with one Oar, andno rudder. This inter- view took place on the 11th inst., in the evening. General Taylor happened to be on the wharf | boat at the ume the vessel approached 1m which Mr. Clay was a passenger. Both shook hanas very cordially. r. Clay did not stop at Baton Rouge, as given out in the newspapers, nor was he invited to remain there for any pur- pose whatever. From all I can learn, General Taylor does not want his advice. Mr. Clay’s ad- vances have been received very courteously; but nothing more. I very much suspect that Mr. | Clay teels like a disappointed man. Oa his re- | turn to the Senate, ithe should be elected, he may | try to play the same game he did after the election of General Harrison. But if he attempts it, he will tind General Taylor a tougher subject to deal with | than either Harrison or ‘Tyler. | An order, I understand, has reached Baton Rouge from the War Department to tie command- ing officer in California, to detail one company of dragoons, and one of intantry, to be placed under the command ot Lieut.-Colonel Emory, as an e8- | cort to the boundary surveying commission. Thia | commission will very soon start for San Diego, and thence proceed to meet the commissioners on the pait of Mexico before May next. Tney will then mark out the boundary between the two countries, according to the late treaty with Mexico Ltt lhave nothing further to say in relation to the pohtical views or measures of the new administra- tion, in addition to what! wrote youa few days ago. 1 am satisfied that Gen. Taylor's cabinet and admt- nistration avill be composed of that class ot politi- clans whoare denominated whigs, but not *furious- ly vo.” On the slavery question, a3 applicable to the new territories and lo the District of Columbia, he would adhere as nearly as possible to the principles developed in the policy of Jetlerson and Madison, but not to the recent “new lights,” either of the North or the South. {t this should be tne case, and be successtul, General Taylor will give the whi party a pladorm somewhat similar to that whiel General Jackson vceupied, and altogether differ- ext from that which has been advocated by the ultra whigs of the North and the ultra democrats of the South. In fact, it looks as it the policy of the new admunistration would reorganize the clementa of the whig party, and give the.a a more practical, sensible, aud tenable ground to eceupy, than they huve Leld for the last 20 years, either in the North | or in the South. Jt you should see Colonel Bliss in New York, you will find him a very quiet, gentlemanly, modest and unpietending man ; but uader that exterior he | poeseeses a great deai of practical talent, a very | high order of 1steliect, and fae literary tiste. ire. Bliss is an amiable, dignified, and excellent young lady, not dashing, nor extremely beautiful, but en- cowed to a considerable extent with what 15 bet | ter—the more estimable qualities of good sense, u- | tellect, and feeling. We havo had rather an interesting day in the Senate | Mr. Douglass called up his California bill, rojuctedby | the Judiclary Committee, and moved w substitute for | it, to which various amendments were offered, and | after some converration, the new bill aud amendments were referred to the following seleot committee — Mr. Douglass, of Iil., Chatrman, Mr. Clayton, of Delaware. Wasninaron, Jan. 24, 1849. Henrr Clay. There is some desire to know what is to become of Mr. Clay. It is feared that General Taylor Senate, and Mr. Crittenden in the Cabinet ae it is apprehended that the good fellowship oxist- ing since Jest February between Mr. Clay and Mr. Crittenden, is about ona par with the fraternal regard subsisting between Mr. Benton and Mr. Cal- | houn, In either the Senate or State Department, Mr. Clay, if he comes, must be the Magnus Apollo, His only courre will be his old course, of direoting the party and contrelling the administration. Hence the curiority and anxiety among the new school of the Taylor whig party, a5 to what isto be done with Mr. Cley. Doring the last summer there was an extract of a letter published inthe New York Eepress, from Mr, Clay, ceclining to be considered a candidate for the Preside iy Int tter there occurred a line of asteriexs, showing that a portion of the letter beo been omitted. We under now to ray that the gist of the letter thus omitted amounted to @ substantial declaration om pd Tone Sod Mr. Clay, that the nomination of General ba lor was on not fit to be made’’—that he dwelt upon the inexperience of Oid Zeck in olvil i mn to General Vass the merit bis # bec administration of the gover: fay that several letters of this character, Clay. might be produced; and that the diMoalty with the whigs last summer was not to procure « letter from Mr Clay in support of General Taylor, but to prevent lascivious dreams and nighthy emissions, Reco: RALPA'S PRACTICAL ¥ K.
