This is the gist of | ‘The Herald Almanac for 1849. To supply the wants of the public for a good and ebeap political and statietical alt no, divested of the nonsense and balderdash which accompany the alma- nace annually issued trom publication offices devoted to the service of party, we have compiled, with great care; and offer to the public, for the low price of si: cents each, the Henap Austanac, for the year 1849. Published on Tuveday morning, January 2, This publication, which is designed as an annual publication from the Heraxp office, will be found to contains vast body of political and other information, for the use of politicians and citizens of the United States generally. It is printed in a neat pamphlet form of 48 pages octavo ; and besides the calanderand the ususl astronomical information, calculated for the principal meridians of the United States, contains fall returns, from all the States, of the recent Prosidential election, arranged by counties, &e.; population tables; statements of trade on the New York canals; extracts from United States public documents, vis. : the Trea- sury and Post-office reports; and a compendious chro- nolegy of events which transpired during the eventful year of 1848. ‘We can confidently commend this Almanac to our readers, and citizens generally, as containing in the cheapest form possible, a vast fand of information which will prove, hereafter, of high value for ready reference, and decidedly superior in its contents tothe ephemeral, and generally incorrect, similar publica- tions of the day. The California Heralds, Tre Caivonnia Herarp, No. 1, fall of valuable information relative to the Gold Region, and the routes thither, accompanied by a very full and correct MAP OF THE GOLD AND QUICKSILVER REGION, is ready for delivery. I¢ contains over twenty columns of reading matter. We ehall publish the Carironsra Henan, No. 2 next Friday or Saturday. It will contain all the addi- tional intelligence that may arrive from the Gold Region, together with the movements throughout the country of the migrating parties, &o.; and be illus- trated with a splendid map of the Bay of San Fran- cisco, with all the soundings and islands therein, carefully delineated. This will be a very valuable number to those who are going to El Dorado by sea. Agents are requested to send in their orders as rapidly as porsible for both numbers. The Harlem Railroad is completed to Dover Plains, Dutchers county, notwithstanding some apprehensions existed that the appointed day, the let of January, would pass over and find the work not done. The first train to Dover parced over the road on Sunday morn- ing, December 31st. The distance is 82 miles from New York—20 miles east of Poughkeepsie. Thus the city of New York has effectually tapped the rich county of Dutchest, and the Harlem Railroad will henceforth stend among the most successful and pros- perous establishments of the country. Regular trains will room commerce running, and the earnings of the company will soon show the immense importance of this extension of the road. For its length, it is one of the cheapest works of the kind in this section of ths country, and the etockholders will soon reap a rich re- werd for their enterpize and perseverance. Generals Tenorio and Gar~ riere belong to the war party—the party which opposed the treaty of peace with the United States—and, without the countenance of the ge- neral government, they meditate taking possession ot the city and fort cf Tampico. Pablo Castillo, who commands the National Guards of Tampico, has hitherto, with his force, steadily resisted all attempts to introduce troops into the city; but itis supposed that, by this time, Tenorio and Garriere are in possession of it, as Castillo and his associate leader, Pepe Gonzales, have only five hundred men in the National Guard, and only one handred aod fitty of them were armed, and they had ne artillery, the cannon they obtained some time ago by force from Mr Chase, t. e United States Con~ sul, having been retornedio him.
