M. {quotations for stocks vary slightly from day to day, and the sales are only to a moderats extent. This we ‘attribute to the season, more than anything else, as | very little disposition is exhib'ted to make new con- tracts of any kind until the commencement of a mew year. The market is therefore quiet, and prices unsettled; the tendency, however, is upward. We have shown that more then eight millions of | dollars have been expended on less than 150 miles of | road; but we have not shown how that immense | amount has been appropriated. That is an important | amatter for the consideration of the stock holders, and — all the light that can be thrown upon it will, no doubt, | pe very acceptable. ‘We have before us an adverticement, published in an | mrss obscure weekly paper in the interior of Penusylyanta, | ‘dated Nov. 15, 1848, and marked for insertion ono ‘week, from which we make the annexed extracts: — . | LIMITED PARTYERSHIP, ‘ Vader the ot of the Legislature, passed March 21sh, 1826, and the Resolutions amendatory thereof, passed | eIpril 1Orh, 1888. We do pot know what amount of railroad iron has been wanufectured by this tron company for the Erie Rail- road; but we know of one contract of t tons at $67 50 per cent, making aggregate cost of $676,000, The same quantity of railroad iron can now be purchased at $42 a $45 per ton, at which price the Or $255,000 less then the contract price. This is not all. Soon after the above contract was made, it discovered that railroad iron could be imported cheaper than it could be manufactured by this iron and coal mining company, and they suspended operations, put out their furnaces, and discharged their bands, but held on to their centraet with the railroad company, because they could import at a cost of forty-two dollars, and deliver at $07 50 per tom. This is a protitable business, and perfectly legitimate in every particular, and the more contracts the company can full in this way the more money it will make. The only objection the stockholders of the Erie Railroad Company have to it, is the loss cf $255,000 om one contract. When these individuals connected themselves with the iron and coe! company they should have resigned their places in the direction of the railroad company. It in not dificult, with many cates similar to this | mind, to account for the enormous expenditure of money on comyaratively such # short line of road. ‘Tho miscrable management of the financial affsirs of such an extended work, is clearly illustrated in the extracrdinary prices paid for materiaf and to contrac- tors; and where there are to many outlets from ths by tho principal wholssale grocers, and | treasury, the most thorough investigation was abso- lutely necessary, even in the smatlest items, to pra- vent such an immense cost as has already been sad- dled upon the stockholders, Itis well known that such investigations have not been made—that even ordinary economy has not been practised; but, on the contrary, itis almost the universal remark of those who have bad dealings with the compauy, that the managemen- appeared to think there was no end to the resoure of the company; that it was impossible to exhaust the treasury. They have found the bottom oftheir money chests; tho last cent of the six millions of dollars received in cash has been expended; more than one half of the capital stcck of the company has been used up,be- sides constracting @ debt of three millions of dollars, and the road not half finished. These are facts that the company cannot controvert; and the circumstance of no detailed, or any kind of a report, having been made to the stoekholders, during the three years and six months the present board of directors have been in office, looks as though the management was unwilling to give publicity to the actual state of affairs, In another part of this day’s paper, will be found a report of the opening of the Erie Railroad to Bing- hampton. A large party of stockholders went over the road, all of whom were well pleased with the work, and the section of country through which it passed. It appeared to be the universal opinion that when fintsh- ed it would be the most important road in the eountry, Of this there is no doubt; and even completed to Bing- hawpton, it will open to this city an important trade, which has heretofore been attracted to Philadelphia, But in our oxporition of the affairs of the company, we have had in view the interest of stockholders, and have | endeavored to open the eyes of those interested, ore it is too late, that the extension of the road to Lake Erfe may be ensured, and all the benefits to all classes originally contemplated secured. §UL9 Reading Bonde 29 0 running order before the present board came into pow- | = — | for on | will ve allowed, and 2 good morte: oapitel, named in the advertisement the sua of | $02,000, ‘his is sufficient to rhow the eonnext petween the railroad company and the partuershlp ompany; nnd that is ali we wich for the proseut Now it imour intention to present a remarkable ciroum- stance; which happened at the time thie eoal end fron mining company was formed, upon which fae wens ost entirely depended—(it must, however, be Porne in mind that it was formed long betc time named in the advertisement.)
