The Mohawk and Hudson Railroad will declare, ‘next month, a dividend of 3% per cent, making 7 per Cent for the year. The receipts of this road, for the Yearending 3ist Desember, will be about $175,000, against $160,000 last year. ‘Tho running expenses are about $45,000; the interest on the debt, $35,000; two -d vidends, $7,000—total, $155,000 ; leaving a surplus of “$25,000. The exports ot breadetuffs amounted to 34,392 lbs flour, 62,040 bushels wheat, and 26,938 bushels of In- dian corn, of which there were shipped to Great Bri- tain 29,534 bbis. flour, 52,040 bushels wheat, and 20,8) burhels of Indian corn. It appears by this that the bulk of the shipments of breadstuffs from this port is made to the ports of Great Britain and Ireland. Con- siderable quantities of lard, cheese, hams and tallow, are weekly exported to Liverpool for distribution to the various markets of the kingdom. The shipments to Franee during the week were limited. For the se: ponding period for several years past. For the week ending the 17th inst, the shipments of breadstuffs from Philadelphia amounted to 5,510 bbls flour, 5,887 bbla corm meal, 47,202 bushels wheat, and 16,606 bushels of Indian corn. If it was not for the movement in bread- stuffs our foreign export trade would be reduced to the jowest point, and we should be compolled to ro- strict our imports, or suffer a larger drain of speole than we have already experienced. The quantity of breadstuffs exported from this coun- try to Great Britain and Ireland, for the lst of September, 1848, up to the latest dates, was 431090 must be the case, evem in the absence of an extensive foreign demané for our breadstuffs,xs our own consump. ee =. : ‘ton has reached an amount that requires very large | Lard, Nes to satisfy and keep prices down to a reason- “L. To Great Britain, the shipments this year show an increase of more than seventy-five per cent; but the decrease in the ship- ments to France has reduced the aggregate to the point named above. The large receipts this year i, extraordinary, in the face of the great depreciation in prices, particularly when the prospect of the orop is not favorable for a larger yield than in the year previous. The planters are not usually in the habit of bringing out their crops so rapidly, unless prices are remunerative and the demand active. The larg® supplies this year, compared with last, no doubt have had an important and unfavorable influence upon prices, as they create the impression that the crop is going tobe much greater than in any previous year, or than it in fact will be, Stock Exchange. “ 12000 Treas Notes, 6's 10454 600 sha Reading RR 206 iu Mao 106% 00° do 30 ay 10 do BIS 295% 5000 107% 300 do 295g 1000 U 85's, "53 SH do vedas 29'3 1(40 Kentucky 6's 98} 10 Nor & Wor RR bém 35 2000 Indiana State 5's 54) 50 do 32 1000 Ohio 6's, 60 Ww. oo do 050 32 5ishs Mechanics’ Bk 105% 50 do #30 32 40 Leather Bank v7 & do 80 8244 WBkofComfcrip %% 32 do Bu 100 Farmere’ Trust, 880 27% 100 do 2 2 do (blames WW 5) do 260 3: 100 do DIS 2714 100 Har pref Btk, full, b60 92 50 do b1l0 27% 100 do ‘b6O 91 20 do 27° 225 Harlem RR 49% 100 Morris Canal 100 do BOO by 25 Hudson River RR 554% 850 do 49% 22N York & Nilay RR 85% 60 do 90 50 0 85. 85 ErioRR, new, full 6014 do 260 8534 60 Long Island RR, bom 203g 100 CantonCo B80 80g BD do 10% do 10 do 19 100 Mohawk ©, blms 75; jecond Board, $15000 Treas No! 104: 275 shs Reading RR 2 100 Erie 7's Bonds do a 100 she Harlem RR b60 4998 25 Nor & Wor RR aug 20°" do 49% 25 Erie RG, full b1S Gus 0 do 815 25 Long Island 1556 50 do BS 49% «6 do no 19 100 do preffall, b30_ 91 CITY TRADE REPORT. ‘Wepnespay, Nov. 22—2 P. I7b mstant. presided His Honor, Judge Evans, Tie prosecution was conducted by Chas. Breweter, sq., and the prisoner, Jose Pons, bly and eloquently defended by C. B. North. rop, Esq. The mdictment charges! that the prisoner killed Vincent Fortuna, by inficting upon him twe vrounds with a cook's carving knife. The evts | demee adduced was—the dying declaration of Fore | tuna ; the admission of the prisoner to the cook ; the High tof the prisoner, acd otuer circumstances” No evidence was introduced on the part of the prisoner. ‘The defence rested upon she absence of direct proof, i The deceased and the prisoner were mariners attached to a Spamsh brig, consigned tote highly respected house of Cay & Averlhe, on Hast Bay. On the night of the raurder deeeased left the brig; and on his waséto the privy om the whart, he was wounded by a blow, from behind, with # knife; he turned, and received another in the al le Fortuna states he saw the man ag he ran, and that it was Pons; but he omptted to state, and he was | not so questioned, how he identified Pons, The cool, the principal witness for the State, swere that Pons told him (the cook) “you need sot search for your knife—I threw it into the dock.’” Pons is still young, his head would muster asa fine one with our phrenological friends; his featuree are good; his eyes beam with intelli- gence; just below the middle size, rather active than strong; lis modest bearing and gentle, pressive countenance, impresses you in his favo! and hence you may account, in some measure, for the interest which all classes telt in the verdict, But he #ed trom justice, and was captured. Yes, and how often has not innocence fled, at the idea ot being charged with crime ; or to’ prepare for defence, or await the conjunction of expected fa- vorable circumstances? How often have brave men fled at some unaccountable panic, and re- turned and proved their prowess on the field? These are but a few ot the items of this most mysterious murder. The jury are now, while L write, eighteen hours unagreed in their Verdict, be it for or against the prisoner, I feel satisfied his counsel has done his duty. There can be no doubt of a new trial, upon the ground, that after the ary was sworn, and part of the evidence heard, one of them took sick, was discharged, and the judge directed another to take his place, which was done, and thus permitted the case to go om. This is anerror. A new jury should have beea sworn, and not thus amended. I bave no time at osed to speak of general matters here. I may do that at another time. Wasurnaton, Nov. 20, 1848. Pleave wddreas brent = = Fr | Brite ot the party wi ‘There is an air ot subdued, quiet, pious résigna- tion to fate and Taylor on the face of almost every man one meets here. With a most reverent defe~ rence to the will of the majority, the people 1n office have modestly given up their harsh notions of General Taylor, and he has increased wonderfully in favor since his election. Whatever is the rea~ son of the change, the adherents of Mr. Cass are much fewer than when I left here in September. Another strange phenomenon 18 observable, Among those whigs who entertain a laudable am- bition to serve their country, there arise fearful doubts as to the fitness of the General to do the | duty of a whig President, now that he is elected. They are, in consequence, extremely shy, and they stard ready to worship or denounce him, according as he behaves towards them. Pro- scription or no proscription—that 18 to be the criterion of his fitness. If he proscribe, he will be to them a second Washington—if he do not proecribe, he will be worse than John Tyler. Tits verdict will not, however, end with the words “so say we all.” There are, fortu- nately, many honorable men in the whig party, ready to sustain the President elect in cai out the policy which it 1s already apparent he 1s disposed to pursue. 1 mean a non-proscriptive policy. And it is not improbable that upon thie very question there will be a serious dissension the party skortly after General Taylor’s inaugura- ticn. In this struggle the politician will doubtless have the best of it. The more respectable portion of the purty is composed of men indisposed to wrangling, and whe care nought for politics, ex- ceptas the medivm of carrying into effect the honest principles they believe in. ‘4 It is supposed here that General Taylor will b> forced to adopt the proscriptive policy, because t will be impossible for him to choose a cabinet th majerity of whem will not be in favor of a whole- sale reroval of their political opponents from office. Much, of course, will depend on hw choice of a cabmet. Much, also, will depend on his owe firmness. The whig politicians are very hungry and thirsty. Year after year, the stream of patron- age has been flowing past their lips, and no dro» of it has been allowed to cool their parched throats, The fruits of office have been ripening betore thetr eyes under successive administrations, and they have been cruelly precluded from tasting them. Once, indeed, in 1840, they believed they had them within their grasp, but the results of their victory were ‘Like Dead Sea feults, that tempting lie, But turn to ashes on the lips.’ Again, they cherish the belief that the fruits are within their reach, and it will drive them to dee- | pair if they be not suffered to revel in their en- jJoyment. Z Already there 1s a most important movement originating among the democrats. They are engaged in preparing for the oes of a set of articles which they design to make the basis of their opposition to the incomi: administration. Alter the revulution effecte by Luther, the church of Rome entered upon a rigid eelf-purification, and resolved to put from it alllaxity of doctrine and conduct. The democratic party is about to pursue a ilar course. The fact is, on the basis of the democratie party has been raised a most anomalous super- structure of anti-republican practice belief. Agsinst this, the young democracy, which is cer- tainly the most sound and healthy, are about stern- ly to protest. The movement has commenced im Philadephia, Should it not be suppressed 1n its infancy by the efforts of the older politicians of the democratic party, who are altogether conservative in their notions, this new movement will sweep the free soilers out ot existence. = Those of the democrats who still cling to the ree soil movement, will soon be forced, by the more solid coalition and cohesion of the democ: tie party, to the whig ranks under the leader- ship of Nir ‘Webster, who will in all probability be regarded, for the next tour years, as the champion ofthe anti-slavery portion of the whig party. And thus, although the young democracy are organi- zing an active opposition to General Taylor’s ad- ministration, they may, after all, be compelled to give hun incidental support and defence agains ho now claim hum as theie resident. It was not of splendid style, but com fortable. He had kept bachelor’s hall while his family resided at Elizabethtown. It 1s eaid that | after the fourth of March, he will agauft make this city his headquarters. The whigs fired one hundred guns to-day, im celebration of the election of General Taylor. The powder came from the arsenal, by order of Col. Prtcott. This would not have been done be- fore the seventh of November. To-mght there is 0 be agreat procession, and speeches are to be delivered.
